I hated homecoming. Stopped playing around two hours in. Bland enviroments and even even more bland enemies. And the graphix suck.

Wow, there's that much of a difference? I was planning on picking up SM later on for the PSP, but if the Wii version looks like that then I guess it's time to dust mine off. Thanks for the comparison.

Is SH 4 or Origins worth playing through? I've beaten 1-3 and plan on getting Shattered Memories for the Wii.

I've played both on the PS2, and I'd say they both are worthwhile. Origins was ok, but not great. In fact, I pretty much hate that game. I hated the main character, having to switch between worlds was irriating, boring bosses, those terrible things that tackle you in the streets, and the fact that Travis has the stamina of an obese man made for a very memorable game. I only played it twice, and I refer to the second as my "revenge" run because I obtained the incredibly over-powered moon gauntlets which killed just about anything in two hits. Despite my feelings towards it, it was worth playing through at least once.

I liked SH4 a bit more, though. I love the first-person perspective in the apartment, and especially so in the first half of the game. Voyeurism is so creepy sometimes. The music was really good, and it's my second favorite soundtrack of the series. It also has a pretty interesting story. However, it has its share of problems. The worlds are pretty bland compared to what was seen in the first three games, and you have to go through them twice. The monster designs are pretty weak in this game. I like the design of those twin-head things, and the "One Truth". The ghosts are pretty creepy at first, but become truly cumbersome after you've seen them over five times. You can take them out permanently with some special swords, but there are only about five in the whole game. It's very lacking on puzzles, and there are only two boss fights. By the second half, it started to become rather boring and frustrating as you have to do a great escort mission with stronger ghosts chasing you. I heard that it was not intended to be a Silent Hill game, but a spin-off which is evident once you play.

It's not perfect, but it is worth playing through for the music, awesome first half, and intriguing story.

Each time someone posts screenshots of SH3 (PC or PS2), my underpants get a little bit dirtier. The visuals are so incredibly amazing.

to be honest, this shot doesnt do justice to the ps2 version (is it out of a youtube video?),the aspect-ratio is off,it looks like the grain filter isnt even there (though i wish you could turn it off it like in the older games)

Those screengrabs where taken by a Gaffer called MiniDika, or something like that.

im probably in the minority who liked the dual-analog control more than wiimote waggle, though the speaker was much more intense of course

I dont think you actually "waggle" in this game.

Nice bump, but you could definitely make a new thread in OT.

edit: wait, it's only a fan-production. meh.

Amazing. And glad they're making a HD version too.

Sometimes my friends express interest in the series but never really wanted to play the games. This seems perfect!

I don't know how they'll squeeze it all into 80 minutes, but it's an excellent idea. This will tide me over until they finally decide to re-release this game in HD. I really hope we get a God of War style remastered compilation of the first three or four games.

I'm curious to see what they do here. Most of that teaser originated from the TGS 2000 trailer of the game (at 3:45). Seems like slicing in bits from the final game might be a bit more difficult.

Still, this TGS trailer remains fantastic and the visuals still hold up very well. Looked insane back in 2000.

Yeah, I remember seeing that trailer on a TV show because internet was terribly slow here at that time. I was like 12 back then. :lol

Anyways, Fungo (the uploader of that video) is a big SH fan, he runs a SH fan site for a long time and most of his videos are top-notch. I'm really looking forward to this, even if it's just for the remixes of Yamaoka's amazing tunes.

Dude come on, why did you do that? I was super excited for an update about this game :(.
OK first of all, if you check the last two pages of this thread, you'll see that many posts are completely irrelevant to the new SH. I think that's mainly because after E3 there was another thread created for the upcoming SH game.
Secondly, people didn't seem to care about the bump when I posted the preview video of said project a couple of weeks ago, so it was only logical for me to come back here and post the final links now that the movie is available on the internet.

If, however, you all think this is the wrong place, perhaps a mod could move the last few posts into a new thread and spare me from all the bitching of yours?

Dude, ignore them. They don't realize that a majority of this thread has not actually been about the new Silent Hill game. I call it unfocused ignorance.

My one complaint of Shattered Memories is I found it to be light on the gameplay. Hopefully the next game will take many ideas from it nevertheless.

That's fair I guess. I was upset because this thread popped up in my subscribed thread list and thought it was new information/media. Didn't have an idea what happened in the last pages. Either way, I think it would've been much better if you posted that in a new thread

This wasn't thread-worthy, so I figured I could just bump this thread instead. I might also add that there will be some new info/screens/gameplay later this month, according to some below-the-radar info from Vatra:

New Silent Hill 8 Details

While Games Access 2010 may not have provided any new info on Silent Hill 8; it looks like this interview by Czech video game site Doupe provides some. The site got to sit down with Lead Designer of Silent Hill 8, Mark Berka. Mark tells of how the game will be moving away from the more action oriented feel of Silent Hill Homecoming to something akin to Silent Hill 2. The games primary influence, in terms of atmosphere, will be Silent Hill 2. Seeing as Silent Hill 2 was the highlight of the Silent Hill series, this is good to hear. But didn’t Double Helix, creators of Silent Hill Homecoming state the same? Mark also states that while he and the team enjoyed the Silent Hill movie; no inspiration from the film will be used. The team is apparently also working with key members from the series. Whether this be the new ‘Team Silence’ which are the western developers, or older members like Owaku and Ito from ‘Team Silent’ is not stated.

Silent Hill 8 is also set to focus more on the psychological horror aspects of the series and less on the survival horror. Silent Hill 8 will follow escaped convict Murphy Pendleton’s journey into Silent Hill. Mark tells of how a convict protagonist seemed like a good choice because he would have so much background and depth to his character. So far everything we hear sounds good. Hopefully Vatra can channel the spirit of Silent Hill in a unique but familiar way. More info on Silent Hill 8 is supposed to be given this month.

Source (Doupe) *Google Translated* Thanks (Silent Hiller)

This sounds like the usual stuff everyone says ("just like Silent Hill 2"), but it is uplifting to hear that neither Homecoming nor the film adaptation will influence the game.

Those things are good things, but they're still just words. We'll have to see. Trailer's good, dev's track record is.. uh..

I'll be taking a $60 leap of faith on this title for sure.

I'll definitely be buying it. But they really need to work on the game environment this time around. It's not silent hill scary anymore....

Murphy Pendleton... :lol... gets me every time.

I've been watching Dexter a lot recently (just started Season 3)... and the composer's got fucking massive shoes to fill.

What type of knowledge do you need of the Silent Hill 1 storyline to be able to understand the storyline in SH3?

It can stand on it's own OK, in my opinion... but knowledge of the first would definitely clear up a few confusing moments you are bound to have.

Can they at least borrow the Japanese character modelers from Silent Hill 2-4 for Silent Hill 8? I can only imagine the level of awesome they could produce on a current gen system...

Any chance Silent Hill 2 and 3 will ever come to Steam?

Last I heard, they're pretty annoying to get running on modern hardware. Something about having to disable all but one core on multicore processors and such. As much as I'd love to see them on Steam, I doubt it'll happen.

Who knows, maybe GoG?

Hasn't every Silent Hill game since Silent Hill 2 claimed to take more influence from Silent Hill 2?

Just make a good game, the bait and switch doesn't work anymore.

We could easily have a "Silent Hill Cycle" image at this point

- New Silent Hill announced
- Developers saying they're going away from the last game and drawing more inspiration from Silent Hill 2
- Pyramid Head used out of the context of SH2, proving the developers have missed the point completely
- Game comes out and draws hate from at least half the fanbase, but regardless has little connection to Silent Hill 2
- Fans argue about which games in the series are the best until next game is announced
- Go back to step 1

Wait, people argue over that? I thought it was pretty much unanimously agreed that the first three were the best, with SH 2 being the pinnacle of the series.

People argue about everything. 2 is generally accepted as best but you will find a lot of arguing over 3 vs 1, whether 4 was good at all, etc.

Nope, first one was the best. Then there are some that want to say 3 is better than 1 (mostly SH2 fans). Whether 4 was good or not. And whether or not SM is complete shit or the restoration of the franchise.

then you thought wrong.

there is debate over the best. there are a lot of people that think 2 is brilliant that don't like a lot of the series, but people like me that at least like every game in the series (they range from brilliant to okay, which is a wide range), have widely varied opinions over which is the best and in what order the others go.

i find a lot of time that silent hill 2 fans, aren't really fans of the series. i don't say that to count them out, because obviously their opinion is as good as anybody elses, but they tend to dislike all of the others for not being the insular understated personal story that 2 had.

personally, two is one of my least favourite, for many reasons i've gone into time and again.

i'm not alone. i'm always happy to out CVXfreak as another 2 nay sayer.

tis a series with an awful lot of debate.

'i think the SH1 is the best' team are smaller than the 'SH2 is the best' team, but we're certainly a pretty large group!

ah yes, this old chestnut.

the 'point' of some notes in an artbook. was it even printed in English?

there is no reason that the town cannot use different archetypes to represent different elements of different character's personal demons, and i think it's readily apparent from the games that this occurs with variations on different monsters.

pyramid head meaning one thing to James and something else to other people is no different to the numerous (and varying) appearances of nurses, which represent different things to different people.

he isn't identical in his appearances either across the games, so you can absolutely believe that James' pyramid head is different to the other we saw in homecoming.

the fact is that whatever the developers intended pyramid head to be, they also blatantly intended things to be left open to interpretation, pyramid head included. there isn't meant to be one absolute version of events that cannot be argued.

they wanted it to be DEBATED about what he meant and who he was, so to say that any developer using him 'has missed the point' is missing the point in and of itself.
