Nintendo DS Games in HD

So? This isn't a thread about DS games on it's original hardware; it's about emulation at higher resolutions and with filtering added. And besides, better knowledge of graphics and modern techniques allow developers to get better visuals on hardware that is not as powerful.

Yes, but the games themselves would've been designed for the original hardware. Sometimes games include much higher quality assets despite the platform not being able to take advantage of them, which is why sometimes you get miracles like Final Fantasy Type-0 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on PSP looking way better in emulators. But most of the time, the assets are going to be downsized only to what's necessary to make the game work. At some point, it doesn't matter how much processing power you throw at a game, the source assets will be the limiting factor. The more advanced the original platform, the better the assets will be on average and the higher the ceiling will be for image/rendering quality in future emulators.

Woah, these look great! Thank you! :)

No problem! I wanted to do more because I dig the games aesthetic, but like I said I got a little tired of being halted every room to mash A through text boxes. Maybe ill take another crack at it sometime.

So, 3DS scaling is a thing now

I really hope Citra will add DS4 touchpad support, so it can be used to press the items and equipment buttons. Having to use the mouse would be some real bullshit.
Also, picture in picture, I really hate that DS emulators make you have both screens lined up, I want something like this:

Give me those two things and it's perfect.

I always wonder why Nintendo uses really good textures that we cant see because of the piece of shit screen resolution the DS and 3DS have.

Either they are "future" proofing the games so that the games look good on a HD screen or they just do it because they can. But man those graphics are ridiculously good, almost GameCube quality :)

well uh, that's already a non-issue as the DS4 touchpad works as a mouse.

Or add support to stream the touchscreen to your touchdevices

Dunno. I watched an hour of Gran Turismo yesterday and it manages to push a lot more.

DS graphics always felt like a half point between GBA and PS1 sadly.

What? The DS is superior to the PSX pixel for pixel, it just outputs on a much smaller screen/resolution so the HD treatment is particularly hard on the eyes.

No PSX game has models like that.

If they do it won't be in 3D. Wonder if this emulator will utilize the in game 3D or have you force it via gpu driver.

In game 3D and driver 3D are probably the same thing in practice. The games were just designed with 3D in mind so don't take size/depth shortcuts.

You'd still have to move the cursor around, and it'd be really finicky with the touchpad.
I want to be able to press a point on the touchpad and have it press that same point on the touchscreen, much more convenient.

Or add support to stream the touchscreen to your touchdevices

Actually that's a better idea. You'd be able to attach a phone to an Xbox or Wii U controller and use gyro controls with it.

Wow, those 3DS shots are beautiful.

If they get backwards compatibility working on the NX handheld, I really hope they finally allow the games to render at a higher res + AA.

Too much great artwork is going to waste here because of the poor original resolution.

Woah, this is AMAZING.

I've always said the 3DS has good performance and this proves it once more! In HD its graphics really shine. MORE, please, MORE!

I'm really amazed at how much the DS could constrain all that graphical goodness. Seriously, some of that stuff is mind-boggling.

Damn, I was hoping there'd be more advances in DS emulation to make it look better.

Still cool to see 3DS games looking this good tho!

Any 3D Land or Mario Kart 7 screens?
Those Majora's Mask pics look simply stunning and I'm not even into Zelda.

Now I wait for the comparison of Xenoblade Wii and n3ds! Is n3ds even emulated or is Citra currently only able to do 3ds?

Wow I just love the look. Echoing a few other people, I hope that at some point indies will start moving from 8-bit/16-bit to low-poly low-res textures no texture filtering. Because these shots have some style of their own that is really great.

It keeps the appeal of pixel art, while allowing devs to utilize the freedom that 3D gives to game design. I really enjoy the stuff what Notch did for 0x10c:

And of course Minecraft, which made it possible for lots of people to try out new texture packs and make their own; low poly/low res made it really accessible for people to make the game look and do whatever they wanted. That's great for budding game designers.

Sorry about the length of the gifs! This was literally the limit to get sub 2MB gifs, and I didn't want to use webm's if I didn't have to. Here's another still comparison of the normal resolution compared to 4x resolution with AA applied.
