Episode 2 was terrible. It was softcore porn level of bad.
Only redeeming part was last 30 seconds.
edit - i'm perfectly fine with nudity, sex scenes if they serve a purpose.
if they don't - they better have hot people doing them. those scenes had neither.

Loved everything about that scene.
Tyrion surrounding himself with 'his' people is pretty awesome to see. Wonder if he rought any of the tribesman back to King's Landing with him as well.

Tyrion cleaning house. Varys and Littlefinger next.
Episode was pretty lackluster overall. Thought it was kind of all over the place. There are a lot of narrative threads to tie together now. All of Tyrion's scenes were great. The fat kid on the Nights Watch is annoying. The scene with the pirate was too long and didn't feel necessary. Why spend so much time on this? Can't they just tell us they recruited pirates? The sex was a little much this time. Littlefinger's scene with the whore was alright ... Guess she is becoming a bigger character ? Hope not she's boring. Ending was cool .. Guess they give the males to be raised by Whitewalkers?
Scenes with Arrya were just ok ... Was hoping to see that piece of the story developed more...things need to start moving now

The sex scenes absolutely made sense in the context of this latest episode. Which characters were these gratuitous scenes associated with? Theon, Littlefinger and (newcomers)Melisandre/Stannis.
For Theon, this has been well established with Roz, and now the wannabe "salt wife" & his sister. He's being made out to be an unsympathetic character and his blatant sexual abuse of those around him reflects that.
For Littlefinger, well, this is yet another example of his motivations. He cares little for those who work for him and the scene reflected that.
For Melisandre and Stannis, the scene reflected seduction of Stannis in order to bring him a son. Entirely relevant to the plot, and again, it looks to be indicative of the characters themselves.
For those thinking that these sex scenes are unnecessary, I'm curious as to what you think about my above linked post, and how the scenes with Cersei/Jaime and Tyrion/Shae were *not* gratuitous... especially since the actresses themselves are obviously comfortable with nudity. These are very significant counterexamples to the "unnecessary gratuitous sex scenes" argument.
For what it's worth, do I think that HBO takes liberties with sex, violence and language? Absolutely, and it's characteristic of pretty much all their major shows. However, do these sex scenes serve a very clear purpose? Absolutely, and this latest episode just confirms that.

The sex scenes were a bit much but overall this was an excellent episode, loved Arya/Gendry, loved Tyrion/Slynt, loved Tyrion/Cersi, loved Davos/Saan, loved Ghost and loved Theon meeting up with dear old dad.

JB1981 did it above mine, so I figured there was a rule against showing spoilers if it hadn't yet aired in all markets (9pm on the west coast hasn't aired yet, but I watched the east coast feed myself).
Also, to add on to my argument... Daenerys (like Tyrion) is another great example of using gratuitous sexuality when it is warranted, and refraining when it's not.
When she unrobed for her brother? She was a sort of "victim" there, and it was an example of his depravity.
When the dragons were born? She had just walked through flames, so presumably her clothes burned off. Add to that the significance of the scene itself, and the sense of rebirth that Daenerys experienced herself alongside the birth of her dragons.
When she had relations with Khal Drogo? It was rough, brutal and an example of how she was perceived by her new husband. However... once she wanted to learn how to pleasure him properly? She asked Drogo to have sex with him face to face... and the sex happened off screen.
So yes, using another character there are numerous examples on when the sex (while very explicit) was absolutely warranted, and there are examples when it was not. HBO and the producers are actually being very careful on when/where they use the gratuitous sex scenes, if it is used at all.

I felt this episode was weaker than the first. There were too many scenes that felt unnecessary. I had no problem with the sex scenes though. I have no idea why people are complaining, at least not about this episode in particular.

So far I'm more worried for the Starks than I am anticipating the downfall of the Lannisters. 5 kings and 3 are coming for their heads. I don't like those odds.

It looked like Craster's sons were being given up as sacrifice to... something. Presumably the White Walkers but it seemed like it was deliberately ambiguous.

I just wouldn't want to base my future safety on that line of thinking.
The male baby was taken out into the snow and given up for a white walker or some other kind of creature we haven't encountered yet. Jon Snow is viewing all of this in the cover of night and gets knocked out at the end.

A White Walker took the baby away. It had the same shape and glowing blue eyes as the ones in the prologue to season one episode 1 that killed the two guys.
...which are different than the reanimated dead people. Those are just zombies with blue eyes.
Why I'll probably never read the books. I'm horrible at remembering names and the books seem like they'd be hell for me.
Great episode. The scenery and sets are stunning, great acting all around. All the sex scenes fitted in (why oh why is this such a discussion around here, it's borderline nagging). Davos, Melisandre, Stannis, Greyjoy are superb additions.
Again I'm very impressed with the production values this season. Ghost looked great as well.

Sorry, the threads get confusing due to how many of them there are.
For anyone that read it accidentally, it was speculation. It wasn't anything that is actually said in the book. I'm glad I spoiler tagged it nonetheless.
I wasn't a fan at all on first viewing, but after watching the episode a second time I felt it a lot more. Some of the dialog I just couldn't catch the first time through and after absorbing more of the nuances, this is once again a great episode. One week is always too long to wait.

It's unmistakably a Whitewalker. Eyes that glow blue in the night, very tall. Same creature from ep 1. Either they are eating the boy children or raising them. I guess this is some kind of truce the dude-who-fucks-his-daughters has with them.
I think people probably felt that Greyjoy fingering his sister as a little much.

I do hate that Snow character so far,
he just fucks up all the damn time, he cant even sneak out at night without getting it wrong.
Saw the episode and thought it was pretty good. However, it's starting to become a smidge formulaic. Hopefully there will be a twist or two coming up sooner than later.
- Tyrion & Cercei conversations have become my favorite
- Jon's story is interesting sorta.
- I am ready for a battle
- The pirate is a guy from one of my favorite shows- #1 Ladies Detective Agency. He is such a super nice guy in that it's funny seeing him as a pirate in this show. I think I'll like his characater though
- My current interest lies with Daenerys since I'm not quite sure how she's going to get out of this without the dragons breathing fire soon.
This show amazingly offered nice contrasts with the sex scenes this time. Nearly all of them were fine and dandy except for the godawful one invlve Theon & the hooker. The scene immediately following it was expert though and really did show a glimpse of the nature of that world.
I just realized that the prolonged sex scenes can't help themselves for being atrocious. I can't think too many films or shows that have long sex scenes that actually are any good. The best one remains Boardwalk Empires Van Alden one (Mercifully, there was no talking), but Monster's Ball may have been the best out of the bunch of films (Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Angel Heart...).

Been watching the whole series over the past week and just got catched up to the latest episode.
Great show for sure. But I predict it's flaws will be more apparent now that I have to wait a week for every episode. It moves a bit slow. For example I expected shit to go down in the finale of S1, but it was just another episode with some extra setting up for S2.
Something needs to happen soon. And that something is hopefully not killing off another awesome character.. :´(
About the whole sex scenes discussion; I on the side that feel it's rather gratuitous. So many brothel scenes with seemingly little relevance to the main storylines. All whores are young, beautiful and love their work. Incest everywhere. Instead of lingering shots of tits and asses I'd like to see some of that time spent on moving the actual story forward.
Some sex/nudity scenes make sense and do develop the characters, but on the whole I feel the great number of them make the show feel cheaper than it really is. Makes it seem closer to something like Spartacus or Rome than more classy shows like The Wire, Breaking Bad etc.

I seriously can't believe you're using Spartacus as an example of "tasteful" or well done sex scenes in television. Batiatus putting a finger in a slave ass was tasteful? Or did it help establishing the world?

This thread seems to be much more critical of this season so far than the first one.
Gotta say I'm not seeing the drop in quality some people are claiming.
He wouldn't refuse to kill a child on moral grounds, the price would have to be right and then he would.

Enjoyed this week's episode---Pirate Guy is in the running for thus far being this season's Sword Instructor as a character that is instantly amusing and I hope to see more of in the long haul.
Sex scenes are fine by me, even the ship one was amusing for being a bit beyond the norm in terms of participants.
Hopefully the pace picks up, preview for next week's show at least had the air of things coming together a bit more forcefully.

Which sex scenes in particular did you feel not advance the story? I felt all of them in this episode (and pretty much every episode) advanced the narrative in some way.

Pirate guy was ok but NO ONE can top the Sword Instructor.... I miss that dude.
Sex Scenes are fine with me but sometimes they feel a bit odd or a bit over the top. And it looks like the pace will pick up a lot in the next episode or two. The main reason I love this show is the fact that the sh!t can hit the fan in so many ways. I always feel that at any second everything will just go to hell.
