So Sony didn't have any Black Friday deals that were just as competitive as those put out by MS?

Naw. Sony had a decent bundle. GTAV and The Last of US for $399. MS had the Assassins Creed bundle for $329 plus there were a ton of other retail incentives. Certain stores were giving out another free game, or a 50 dollar gift card with purchase. XB1 had true door buster specials.

Boy it is enjoyable having the pleasure to own all three of the new consoles and watch people trip over themselves trying to justify their purchase :D

Congrats to MS, It only took 2 price drops, free games and Black Friday deals to beat Sony, job well done I guess...

At least now we know what it takes to dethrone Sony at this point in time.

Hopefully this puts all that "mind share" nonsense to bed with regards to Sony's momentum in NA.

Um, is the chart coming?

It's official: PlayStation 4's streak of being the best-selling console in the United States is over. Microsoft's Xbox One officially beat out Sony's console in the United States for the month of November.

Microsoft released the following statement to IGN, attributed to Xbox Marketing's Corporate Vice President, Mike Nichols.

We are committed to making Xbox the best place to play, with this year’s best games, the best community of gamers to play with, and terrific value. And we are amazed by the excitement Xbox fans have shown to start off this holiday. November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK. Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the U.S. than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally. In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community.

The NPD Group has also released its top 10 games sold at retail for the month of November. As always, the consoles listed in parenthesis next to each game represent the best-selling to worst-selling SKU for each game.

1.) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (360, XBO, PS4, PS3, PC)
2.) Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
3.) Super Smash Bros. (NWU, 3DS)
4.) Madden NFL 15 (360, XBO, PS4, PS3)
5.) Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
6.) Far Cry 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
7.) Pokemon Omega Ruby (3DS)
8.) NBA 2K15 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
9.) Assassin's Creed: Unity (PS4, XBO, PC)
10.) Halo: The Master Chief Collection (XBO)

"We're awaiting the top ten sales charts for the month from NPD, as well as statements from Sony and Nintendo. We'll update this story when we receive more data to share."

I got Ninty like I said:

Dec. 11, 2014

Overall sales of Nintendo 3DS software in November increased by more than 40 percent over the same month in 2013, thanks in part to three huge games:

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire: The next great Pokémon adventures for Nintendo 3DS launched on Nov. 21 and have already sold nearly 1.5 million combined physical and digital units in the U.S. alone.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS: The best-selling individual portable game in the U.S. so far in 2014, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 1.5 million physical and digital units in the U.S. since it launched on Oct. 3.
November was also a strong month for Nintendo on the console side, as sales of Wii U hardware and software increased by more than 10 percent and more than 90 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013. In fact, the week of Nov. 23 was the biggest single week of Wii U hardware sales since the system launched in November 2012. Other Wii U highlights for the month include:

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has sold nearly 710,000 combined units since launching on Nov. 21. With a current Metacritic score of 92, the latest iteration in Nintendo’s venerable fighting franchise is one of the best-reviewed games in the current generation of systems.
Nov. 21 also saw the arrival of amiibo, Nintendo’s new platform where gaming’s most recognizable characters can be used in different ways in many compatible games. Sales of amiibo are approximately equal to sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U so far, while Link, Mario and Pikachu (in that order) have been the best-selling figures to date.

Necessary marketing adjustments. All companies - be it Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo - that have/have had a failing product will need to adjust to the market.

If the market says "We're not going to buy your product", then it's your responsibility as a business to do anything and everything that can change the market in your favor.

the responsibility is to legally maximize shareholder value, that is all

Nope. It's about the games. MS had the better exclusive lineup this fall. Sony still has momentum.

So if that MS PR wording is real, what does this mean

Combine countries it was best selling? Is it possible it outsold PS4 in US and didn't outsell it in UK, but the gap in the US was big enough they can include both?

I think we might be reading too much into it, given MS' track record of obfuscation in the past. It really should just be them emphasising that they did well in the two markets they have been pushing in.

The alternatives shouldn't make sense

- they beat Sony in the US but not UK. But this is NPD results and they've never mentioned the UK I before, so why start now?

- they beat Sony in the UK, but not the US, and the combo is enough to beat out Sony overall. I think this is unlikely as Sony were more aggressively defending in the UK throughout November, and our market is much smaller than the US. So I can't imagine a scenario where the gap is that big to make a difference. Unless they were really barely pipped by Sony in the US I guess.

But I really think we are reading things that aren't there.

No, they didn't... not really :p

just as competitive? you wat. XB1 was essentially 100 dollars cheaper after the deals hovering at basically $200 with all pack ins. Thats hardly "just as competitive.

Wasn't there a PS4 deal with two games for $349?

GTA5 and TLoU:R?
