NPD November 2011 Sales Results [Update 7: Skyrim, CoD Wii, PC Retail Sales Up 57%]

A $40 remake with almost no advertising and no Black Friday deal didn't sell that well?

it's still Halo. I think all the spinoffs and non-numbered Halo games, plus the CoD effect, have dulled the greater public's longing for more Halo.

it'll be very interesting to see what kind of reception Halo 4 launches to.

On the software side, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception sold 700,000 units in the month, NPD revealed to Game Informer, coming in at #7 behind leaders Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The first month sales for Modern Warfare 3 were up 7 percent over last year's Black Ops.
8.4 million x 1.07 = ~9 million

Congrats to Uncharted and Batman making the top 10 in a really competitive month. Surprised to see Uncharted outsell Zelda.

I would congratulate Skyrim too (I've really really been loving the game), but I can't help but feel that they don't deserve that much considering their awful handling of the PS3 version. Luckily my PS3 version post-patch hasn't had many issues, but others are still shit.

Actually I'm not surprised Uncharted beat Zelda. Most people have moved on from the Wii.

However I am surprised that saint's row 3 beat zelda! I would say SR3 use to be a secondary franchise when compared to the likes of GTAIII, Halos, Marios of the world...

Really surprised at Skyrim making number 2, but then again there's been a ridiculous amount of coverage for sky rim all over the net.... i mean it was on weekend confirmed podcast for 4 weeks in a row and possibly more...

With NFS:The Run not charting at all, compared to last year when Hot Pursuit landed in 7th (in front of GT5), hopefully this tells EA to give the game back to the people who knows racing games.

So CoD at least stopped it's astronomic growth. Should be just under 9 million for the month though, jeez.

Notable Absences (game launches in November):

-Super Mario 3D Land
-Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
-Halo Anniversary
-Goldeneye Reloaded
-Sonic Generations
-Need for Speed: The Run
-Rayman Origins
-WWE 12
-Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
-Any Kinect/Move exclusive game

I don't think it's notable that no Kinect or Move titles made the list.

This is big boy season, why would they?

With those shipment figures thought UC3 would have been much higher with all the comparison with Gears. Anyhow where ya at Greenberg.....

Fastest selling doesn't mean everything. The same was said about FFXIII and it still has yet to outsell FFXII's sold-through LTD.

True, but I think SS will have better legs than FFXIII. They generally do and I think there's a good chance it will chart again in December. Even if it doesn't, it's already far from a "bomb", at least in the US.

How large was CoD's marketing budget?

Looks like CoD is hitting that wall.

Impressive nonetheless...

While I agree there is some series fatigue, if it's new and they advertise the shit out of it, it will still sell very well.

“The critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham City sold well in month two at retail and is now just shy of Batman: Arkham Asylum’s lifetime unit sales.”
Haven't seen any hardware company PR yet.

Last month Spyro's Skylanders would have been #11. I'm interested to know whether it has kept pace and where it would slot in this month.

Uh, wow. Usually not interested in sales stuff as it's always so predictable. But not this month.

I mean, Saints Row The Third? And above Zelda? Damn.
And no Mario 3D Land? I thought for sure it would be there.
No Halo? I know a remake isn't very exciting, but it's Halo!

Weird, but kinda nice to see a bit of a shake up.

I for one am shocked that a multiplatform game sold more than a single platform one.

If SS is at half a million, thats awesome news. If other series sell better, well, thats healthy and excellent too.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii Cross Major Milestones after Record-Breaking Black Friday

Strong sales on Black Friday pushed the U.S. installed base of the Wii™ system to 37.7 million units and helped the Nintendo 3DS™ system surpass the first-year totals of the Nintendo DS™ system (2.37 million) after only eight months on the market, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Other milestones reached in November include:

Software

The Super Mario 3D Land™ game for Nintendo 3DS sold more than 625,000 units and is the fastest-selling portable Super Mario™ title in U.S. history.
The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword for the Wii system had the biggest first day in franchise history and sold more than 600,000 units in its first week.

Hardware

Nintendo sold more than 2 million combined hardware units in November. This includes more than 860,000 Wii systems, more than 795,000 Nintendo 3DS units and more than 350,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems. Nintendo 3DS had its biggest single month of sales, representing an increase of more than 215 percent over the previous month, and has now sold nearly 2.5 million units since launch. Wii had its biggest Black Friday ever with more than 520,000 units sold. Full-month sales increased by more than 245 percent over the previous month.

“Great software and unparalleled value drove momentum on Black Friday and through November,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Both Nintendo 3DS and Wii have already set records, and we’ve still got the bulk of the shopping season to go. People are flocking to our bundles and the fun of Mario and Zelda that can only be found on Nintendo systems.”
