Because PC DirectX can't do it what Xbox directX did, amirite?
They where actually having serious problems for YEARS trying to port Strangers Wrath over using Direct X from what I understand. Moving it to Open GL was the best way.

Oh nice. Now that GoldenHelmet is back, can you maybe give an explanation about the high res screenshots of the first two Oddworlds on their steam pages? Talking about these more specifically:

Being a huge fan of the originals I just have to know where these came from!! They can't be there for nothing can they? :D

Yeah, these were mocked up years ago for print based advertising :( sorry.

We actually spent 8 months LAST year looking at finding all the original screens and source code to re-build them with achievements etc, but the projects were just too damned old :(

I know it would take a decent amount of time but has there been talk of ever just doing a full blown remake of those games. Would be GREAT.

Wouldn't that be beneficial for the PS3 port as well?

Despite all the issues, Stranger's Wrath is just as I remembered it; fucking awesome. Taking my time and playing for an hour or so each time just to relax and soak in the Oddworld atmosphere.

So I fiddled around a bit on Ultra, in a Window, on XP.

Intel Core2Duo E7200 @ 3.8Ghz
nVidia GTX 260 on 185.85 drivers (They are old, but the next solid best drivers since 169.69 for me and I've kept them.)

--

Starting area was around 20 fps steady, later it was 30 steady. I only played around for about 20 minutes, but so far:

1) First attempt to load the first level the game hung. Music was playing but it did not load.
2) 19-20 fps in first area
3) Noticeable mouse lag and odd interpretations of input. Fast movements especially were easily noticed (I move the mouse, the camera starts to move, speeds up and settles in place long after I have finished moving). Also some odd latency in aiming with little increments (First Chipmunk shot)
4) Changing Y camera invert did not actually change Y camera invert (First Person did however).
5) The game has a lot of charm

Someone from here sent me a pretty aggressive email 2 days ago which basically said, what business did I have in making a game for the PC when I'd clearly never work on a PC game before ...

Actually Stranger is my first foray into PC development since 2001, I worked on the PC versions of ...

Pinball Fantasies
Pinball Illusions
Slamtilt
Synnergist
Xenocracy
Tank Racer
V2000
In Cold Blood

+ a load of others.

So, like I said, I do have PC experience, but just not recently ;)

Very cool that you worked on some of the Pinball games. How well do you know the current DICE guys?

Stranger's Wrath won't even load for me, it hangs on the first loading screen after selecting new game and choosing a name.

How are you guys getting it to run in widescreen resolutions, anyway? And is it native or is it stretched? Is it possible to run Munch in widescreen as well?

Also, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, the game only utilizes one core, which I guess it doesn't really need more than that, but anyway.

Edit: Meh.. figured out the resolution thing, but the game still hangs on the first loading screen every damn time.

I'm sorry, but reading through the Oddworld Steam forums, it seems like very little has been fixed, and the biggest fix (the ATI thing) has come from a random forum user, not a JAW. Its cool and all that you came back to this thread, but how the hell do you release something thats broken for BOTH ATI and nVidia cards... The fact that this broken game is still for sale bugs me, and I really hate when games are rushed and released in order to capitalize on the holidays, and the end user is expected to keep patching and fucking with files for what should be a simple, working product. This reflects poorly on Steam too, in my opinion, not just JAW. I know PC gaming can involve this kind of stuff, but this seems ridiculous.

I tried this again. Nvidia card. Besides the performance issues, going into first person mode breaks the game. Some controls get locked out, graphical glitches everywhere, etc. I can't play for more than 2 mintues without a game-breaking glitch.

That had better be one hell of a patch.

To be fair the other 3 games work just fine (much just got patched) so if you bought the oddboxx you still got your moneys worth for the other 3 games until Stranger is patched.

The patch broke Munch for a bunch of people, that said it was working previous to it. Anyone who bought the game for Stranger's or Munch certainly are not getting their money's worth. Broken games should not be for sale. Period.

Valve released the wrong patch at the start but then was later fixed, Much is working for pretty much everyone now.

I don't know any of the current ones, as the original guys (Axl, Freddy, Olof, Markus and Ulf) have all left.

Axl is in China
Freddy is in Canada
Olof is still in Sweden, can't remember the name of the company, but they did "Crash Commando"

And I'm not sure about the other two.

Like I openly admitted here, we've got ATI/nVidia chipsets here, but some are 2-4 years old, with 6+ month old drivers, and everything runs pretty nice it has to be said, where we screwed up on is the Compat testing, the people we used weren't as thorough as I was led to believe.

We have found some issues with the latest drivers from both makers now. I've upgraded my 8400 chipset to the 261.xx drivers and it totally breaks the game.

What we have to work out is, is this the implementation of OpenGL we've done, or are the driver makers not paying much attention to it?!

We know from googling that other OpenGL based games are seeing similar problems to us, but also different problems.

So we're going through the entire rendering code for Stranger to make sure we are by the book on OpenGL usage.

OpenGL, by definition is an Open Source system, however when extensions get ratified they are meant to be pretty solid and good. If that is the case, how come we are seeing people (other companies) getting issues with newer drivers etc?!

I went back to 257.21 and the game is working perfectly now, no T-posing enemies or anything and it's actually running too fast, gonna have to force v-sync on.

And it seems to run in 16x9 native with no stretching, so that's cool. Definitely an upgrade from my Xbox version, anyway.

I'm happy now.

Wait, how is it running too fast?

Yeah there's a nasty transperency issue going on with the textures. You should see how messed up windows look :)

well fuck, record a video for us of it running smoothly (mine goes to hell with Fraps on)

Not sure how to do that, and I doubt my rig would handle it.

Anyway, I'm getting about 40 to 60fps with V-sync forced on, 16AF and I turned off threaded optimization as that seemed to make it hiccup a little for some reason.

It's not ideal, but it's not bad.

Didn't get a refund (Steam told me to contact Atari support - yeah right..). Will try the new fixes but not holding out for a bug-free game.
Its going to be patched soon, they are redoing their openGL coding.

Sounds good. Here's a pic of how it looks at the moment (see the black dots and water etc):

Also experiencing very bad mouse control, but I read on the Steam forums that that will be patched too. Also they really need to add an icon to the game.

Suppose I should try Munch's Odyssey now...

Should be cleared up when the patch hits after the holidays.

Also yes mouse controls will be patched too.

One thing I hope changes about Munch's Oddyssey is that rotating the the camera is not done by moving the right thumbstick. Makes camera somewhat annoying.

We actually sent the icon files for both Munch and Stranger to Valve.

As for the black dots, we actually found a bug today in the original XBox ShadowBuffer code which is causing issues elsewhere in the game, hence the black dots...

We also discovered a piece of code in the original engine that was written to be 100% software based for drawing, however in OpenGL there's a hardware blit command, so we're going to replace that, and that will give some extra performance boost :D

Errr... isn't that surely the standard? left stick is move character, and right stick is camera move?

The original Xbox game was mapped that way. Anyway, to map camera control to the right stick, change the camera controls to WSAD in the options. Munch has completely configurable control options.

For whatever reason, I'm guessing because it was released before there was any sort of standard in the genre for dual-analog setups, the camera is controlled with the D-pad on the Xbox version of the game, as well. I just checked it last night.

By icon, do you mean the images that show up in the steam library? Because those look fine to me.

In case anyone was curious Im currently dual booting WinXP 32bit & Win 7 64bit and Strangers Wrath has the same performance issues in both OS's (i7 920 @ 3.6ghz / GTX 480).

They aren't there for the view where it shows the icons small on the left, and then the details next to it.
