my US import is quieter than my Bravia TV... ONLY when I actually turn off EVERYTHING in my living room, do I hear Fan while folding (and it is running at fullest)...

My Sky HD, especially after hard drive upgrade, is a LOT louder than PS3 at loudest...

Folks what is the initial model number of the PAL PS3??
For instance the first PS2 model was SCPH-10000. I own SCPH-39000 for example.
But what about the PS3 models classifiaction?


In other words If I buy a PS3 in 2008 how I can tell from the box that they didn't deceive me by selling (to me) a launch PS3 model?

Downloaded Golf demo of JPN store. Its pretty nice, though it really hard to understand the controls if you dont know japanese. Had fun though, I especially liked how spectators are running away from a flying ball. :)

mine is also pretty quiet - some more noise during game startus and that's all. I can only hear it, if i mute sound on my TV and that's it.

not wanting to kick up MS thread, but the game is kick ass.
Except for vehicle loading, it is really great, but offline and online.

What i love is the fact that you have so many ways to finish the track, not only single road, but at least 2 other ways to take shortcuts... plus interaction with enviroment - like mud tracks, hitting old cars, road signs, which stay at the same place next lap...

It is trully next gen.

The PS3 has a lot more serial number variations than PS2 did. I could not find a complete list anywhere, but if you head over to http://www.ps3registration.com/ and check the drop-down menu there, you will see the series' denominators like CEHCXXX. The last three symbols - one letter, two numbers - designate the unique series.

I have no idea how to read those yet.

I'm obsessed with having a thumbnail for all the videos... I wish that the PS3 would automatically create them once downloaded, or Sony would include a thumbnail file with the actual video download from the PS Store.

So was i and it was driving me crazy, goinf through all the options.
I thought the change icon option was for changing the Play, Rewind, Skip etc icons, then i clicked on it!!!

They do it for games why not movies i don't know. WOuld be cool if you got a screencap in the background too like the game demos have.

I don't. I like creating them from the parts of the trailers that I personally like.

I wish a thumbnail was already created when downloading a video as well, naturally leaving the option to set a new one yourself, but having to make one for each video IS annoying.

OK I have noticed a signal glitch that occurs when i'm using my PS3:

Sometimes when I press the home button on the pad over the XMB or during a game (the options overlay for switching controllers, turning off the console etc) I get a small white horizontal line flicker at the top of the screen (in random spots - always at the top though - seemingly the last line of horizontal pixels).

I have also noticed this quick signal glitch between rounds in Tekken: DR (when the screen fades to black momentarily before a round), Motorstorm - again the black screen just before the race fly by starts), and I could have sworn I've seen it happen in Flow when I dived to a lower level once. This makes me think it's happening when the disk is being accessed, but then the hdd is always being accessed usually and this doesn't occur all the time.

I'm hooked up to a Bravia LCD (S series) using HDMI. I've set the input to overscan and the glitch is no longer visible...which makes me think its not my TV and possibly something the PS3 is doing.

Just wondering if anyone else has spotted this and whether it's something to worry about?

I'm after some advice please. I've decided to complete my trilogy and pick one up tomorrow ready for my first long weekend of the year. But I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to answer...

My projector takes DVI. I know I can buy an HDMI to DVI cable. Is that all I need, is there any drawback in doing that? Would I be better getting a component cable for the PS3 (can I use my PS2 component cable?)

I heard something about not being able to play Blu-ray in 720p (only 480i/p or 1080i/p...any truth in that?)

I'll be picking up Motorstorm and Resistance. So assuming I have the right cable, I just need a PS3 and the games? Anything else I need to pick up or be aware of?

PS Any possibility I can still make it into the 'Free Casino Royale' thing? I really want that movie and would purchase it when I pick up the PS3 but will get a different movie if there's a shot of me getting it for free (and if I do opt for a different movie can anyone recommend something released in PAL land that shows the system off?)

Does your DVI in support HDCP ? If no, forget it.
You can use component cable from a PS2; yup.

Thanks Raist, for the answers so far. Most helpful, I'll use my PS2 component cable as my projector can't handle anything above 720p anyway.

And thankfully I've had a rather nice 5.1 system for some time, with Kef Reference 4 speakers as my front 2 (they cost me just shy of 5k for the pair some 7 or 8 years ago, I must have been mental!!!...but dang do they sound good along with the Reference 2 speakers at the rear). I very much look forward to Resistance.

Anyone know about being able to play Blu Ray discs at 720p over a component in?

You're out of luck. Currently Blu Ray playback is limited to 1080i/p. If you're XMB is running in 720P BR movies will default to 480p when they run.

Non issue for me since my set handles 1080i pretty well. Just wish you could set custom resolution for each app -- XMB/games/Blu Ra etc..

Thanks Pallaris, any idea if this will ever change. Just checked and my projector can take 1080i (but downscales to 720p). But for some reason when trying this with the 360 the image looked less stable (but not by a huge margin so may be ok for movies).

LOL same. I absolutely will not have a video on my PS3 without a full-motion thumbnail.

Have about 30 now and it doesn't even flinch playing them all.

Custom wallpapers though. SO OVERDUE SONY. SO OVERDUE.

I'm not quite sure, but isn't a person from GfK that is commenting and reporting the numbers over 10 days, while Sony only confirmed their results?
Why would Sony need to justify GfK numbers? Or do you say that because Sony affirmed it was a successful launch while confirming GfK numbers?
Also, is 27k sold over 10 days bad or is it good as far as Australian numbers go for a launch (considering it is 10 days in total that is being reported here)?

I don't know nothing about 3 day launch numbers from Australia, cause since the PSP, it has been 4 days.
As has been reported by Gamespot on the 26th of March, quite an old story.
Wii sold 32,901 in four days.
Xbox 360 sold 30,421 in four days.
PSP sold 27,055 in four days, which was considered record breaking at it's time.

The exact amount of PS3's sold were not reported, only that it sold more than 20,000+ in THREE days.

Considering it costs AU$999.95 (US$815), it's quite good. Not record-breaking good as in Europe but still good imo. The Wii costs AU$399.95 and Xbox 360 AU$ 649.95.

I wish it'd let me do video thumbnails for videos on an external HDD. I'm copying them over to the PS3 HDD just because I get video thumbnails. Not really using the HDD except as a transport between PS-PS3
