Overwatch - Review Thread

Hopefully this will be the first MP only title that doesn't get slapped with the nebulous "content" complaint.

I call it nebulous because I think it is silly when people say that MP only titles should be cheaper or something because they "don't have a campaign" when 90% of your playtime is going to be in MP and it will give you tens, if not hundreds, of hours. If the base content is good, and there is a reasonable amount of it (as Overwatch has), then I see no reason why they should be branded with such.
Rushing a review out not even 24 hours after the servers go live seems... yeah.
The base game has the same content as the beta, which hosted 9.7 million players.

The servers have been flaw free so far, so I doubt they will stumble now.

Calling now that this will be one of the most overrated games ever :p

Titanfall had an 86 average review score. Overwatch will score higher for its IP and accessibility ("my first competitive shooter"). But it'll falter for the same reasons as Titanfall: insufficient depth in gameplay and progression/customization. Once the honeymoon phase wanes, you'll find that the games start to become repetitive and same-y.

Congratz to Blizzard either way though. So happy to see a new and well-executed IP.

You're wrong on so many levels.
Firstly this is Blizzard we're talking about. None of their games lost their player base because Blizzard knows how to keep players in their games with feeding them content.
And this is nothing like Titanfall in case of the depth of the game.Titanfall was my personal GOTY of 2014 but what made it fun was the game mechanics it introduced and yes it lacked depth and balance for competitive play.Overwatch is MADE for competitive play.

Git Gud Polygon players... Too Soon?

This joke is becoming more tiresome than the 'it's dat boi' meme and is usually a sign of people not really understanding what makes a joke humorous.

It's like Simpsons jokes post season 15. Stale and borderline annoying.

I've literally never heard of this game, yet everyone on Earth seems to love it. Is their a demo version for the PS4?

You should like go outside or something. Posting on an ehtusiast forum about how much you don't know about a game comes off as attention-grabby. You could learn about the game by clicking an Ad on the PS4 (I'm pretty sure theres at least one Overwatch ad there) instead of waiting for a reply about it.

But, if you're so inclined to not use a lick of common sense:

Overwatch is a 6v6 online only first person shooter in the same vein as Team Fortress 2. 21 heroes. Four game modes across a variety of maps, free-post launch content and is pretty big in the porn scene.

There. That's overwatch.

The game in its current form has been playable for months through the beta's. Basically nothing outside of letting you buy lootboxes has changed from open beta until now. The only thing the reviewers needed to worry about now server stability and the servers were indeed stable.

Man, I really wish there was some offline campaign in this. That's the only thing holding me back. At least at full price.

Why does every game need stupid sliders and unlocks for people to call it "deep"?

There is plenty of gameplay depth and as long as they keep adding cosmetics, there'll be plenty of customisation.

If the gameplay is fucking good (which it is) I don't see why it should be any less "deep" than CoD or whatever just because it doesn't have 16 playlists, 200 sliders, and six in game currencies.

Won't surprise me if this game scores really highly at all. Its absolutely brilliant mechanically and I love the design of the heroes.

You might want to tell the people that have been playing this from each beta it had and have over 300 hours on it and tell them that the honeymoon phase should be ending soon!

Not sure I want to play an online-only multiplayer-only shooter...

... But I AM certainly enjoying their phenomenal CG character videos.

I haven't enjoyed a multiplayer shooter in God knows how many years. But this game is legit, picked it up on hype and I can't stop diving in for odd games here and there, even though I'm busy. It's so much fun.

Remember how no one played CS pre source?

How did they even play without crate drops?!?

This game looks good.

Hope it can stay on north 9x meta.

If it doesn't...will you stop playing? I've never understood why owners or prospective owners of games care about aggregate scoring. Surely scoring won't make the game any more or less fun for you than it already is, and whatever the score settles at won't impact how Blizzard will support this game for many years to come.

I watched a lot of friends in the closed beta play for like 30 hours in a week and then churn completely.

It's a fun shooter but it gets repetitive.

Team Fortress 2 is another great comparison point. What is the killer Overwatch innovation that's going to cause it to be 10x the size of TF2? So far, seems very similar with some incremental improvements and some losses, but nothing revolutionary. Though I agree with the claim that Blizzard could add content to get it to that level.

It is not like Titanfall to be fair... it didn't seem to lack content or deep gameplay.

Wut? What I'm hoping to hold a good score have to do with stopping to play it? I play and enjoy sub-70 meta games lol

This is a review thread and you hope for the best... I will love to see it at 95.

seems early

Reviewers have been essentially playing the full game for quite some time. Like, I could've given you my 100% honest 'review' barring server issues at launch (Which were nonexistent) over a month ago.

This genre is one of my "bread and butter" genres, but that doesn't matter to my anymore. Because I bought Brink day one, and I bought Shadowrun 360 day one.

For me, it doesn't matter who made the game, no more day ones.
I guess? I mean, if it's an unknown quantity I think that's a safe bet, but this is a game people have been playing in full for like 6 months. It's not like a score is going to change a week from now if it didn't from a month ago already. Open Beta was long and most people tried it there that were interested.

I've had it 24 hours and I'm feeling it. The game is great and enough to sink into for hours, simply because the moment-to-moment gameplay is stellar. But I don't think the game has as much depth as it appears to, and that's perfectly fine.

Going to enjoy being a solo Hero as Genji while people still get the hang of the teamwork aspect of this game. Then I will have to play smart and counterpick.

It definitely deserves these perfect scores. This is the most fun multiplayer game I've played in a long time! The lack of gameplay affecting unlocks makes the game so much better than the alternative.

It's going to have very long legs.

Game is soo good. I expect it to review very well. Looking forward to see how Blizzard supports the game and what they might add in the future.

Flawless launch, great characters, fun to play, easy to understand....

I am so happy I relented and paid $60 for it. I thought a multiplayer only game does not deserve the price....Now, after playing for a few hours, I think $60 is a steal. And I probably never would have touched the campaign, playing with and against people is sooo much fun.

It gets 10/10 from me, and to think more content will be coming regularly at no extra cost...
This game will be getting some serious awards come Christmas.

Just going to call you out now - you're a dick mate. Absolutely zero reason to be so snarky in responding to that question. All he did is ask for a demo, which is fair enough since Blizzard did technically demo their game via the beta.

Don't be an enthusiast forum elitist, gives us all a bad name.

The thing that makes it so great compared to other multiplayer only shooter (or ones basically that with token single player) is the character variety.

Play a game as 3 different characters out of all of them and you're already getting more gameplay variety than any number of load outs of different guns and gun accessories from any modern shooter.

With the reaction this game is getting I guess I'll probably have to get it at some point... but I just don't want to say goodbye to TF2

Silly pants, you don't have to stop playing TF2 because of OW. You can play both like me.

This, UC4, and Doom.

May is the new November.

Unfortunately I have to wait a month to pick this up, as I'm in my final weeks of college.
