Heads up people.

Playdate pre-orders are finally delivered and now it can be purchased immediately from their site.

Just ordered mine. With shipping and taxes in Europe it came close to 300 Eur...
But I've been wanting it badly for years.

I think it's a cool device, and I'm sort of glad I have one.

However, that screen - I live in England and you cannot play this thing 6 months out of the year. No backlight is a real bummer.

Teenage Engineering had a hand in making the hardware, which sort of explains the price. They make really weird niche audio gear that’s desirable but massively overpriced.

I’d love one of their OP-1 gadgets but it costs at least 4x what I think it’s actually worth.

No backlit screen, little prospect of many decent games ever being released. Playdate is cool but it would only be a buy for me at <£100.

Ahh nooo the OP-1 is something different. For starters, it doesn't have any competition - so it's a unique piece. It's made of metals and displays and plastics and is very high quality. Teenage Engineering are a small company, they don't employ a huge amount of people and they sell relatively low volumes.

The price is right.

Oh wow... it's in stock...

I hope you guys get electric lighting some day, it's pretty neat!

There is some cool stuff on it, like the Katamari creator's game, but I'm sorry I cannot justify that price tag.

Their latest synth KO II is back to normal. Its priced around 300 euros instead of that fucking insane 2K OP-1 field and the portable mixer around 1300. I have almost all of their synths but fuck that

The price is right??? OP-1 launched at about $800, which is still high in my opinion. A couple of years later they hiked it to about $1300, which is nope territory. Then they made an upgraded one and raised it again to about $2000, which makes it a rich man's toy. There are many gadgets that do much the same thing in a less appealing form factor for a fraction of the cost.

I know it's a nice thing, but what happened to technology coming down in price over the years?

Sorry I must be missing something, who is rushing out to buy this? It's one of the least appealing products I've ever seen. Honestly confused.

This is one of those devices that would be fun to play for an hour, then set it down and never pick it up again. If you have $200 to blow then get something like a Retroid Pocket 4 pro that can emulate up to the Switch.

The OP-1 launched at about $800 - over 10 years ago. These are not commodity items! The software development costs alone (which obviously form part of the purchase price) must be very high. Technology like this does not go down in price. It goes up.

You say:
There are many gadgets that do much the same thing in a less appealing form factor for a fraction of the cost.

Yet there are no gadgets that do exactly the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

You're probably the only person I've ever seen online defending the price of the OP-1...

Almost everything in this field is a bespoke gadget, which is why I said "much the same thing" rather than straight-up clones. And there are loads of alternatives - PolyEnd Play is a good recent one for about 20% of the price. An iPad would do the job too.

Go up in budget and you can get Maschine+ for 40% of the cost. Go even higher up the range and you can have the standalone Ableton Push, which is far more powerful and versatile, and still leaves you with a chunk of change.

Why do people always talk about Teenage Engineering with this stupid device? They consulted on the design. Everything else is the actual company. They make the system, they chose the hardware, they built the SDK and the market. They are charging that much because it's a stupid hipster machine for people with too much money. The price has nothing to do with TE.

Maybe they want to pay their employees well? Most people who own an OP1 seem to love it.

Get an iPad. Really?

That thing straight up looks like the Payless of handhelds

If you had that thing growing up and brought it to school, we'd give you a wedgie so hard your mom would need to order some special edition Wisk to take out the skid marks.

The NoDates.

Ya, ya, whatever. I'll be reeling in all the alt-chick hotties down at the coffee shop while you guys get rejected by your over-the-hill ex-cheerleader flabby girlfriends/wives with a beer gut, dreaming about the good ol' days in high school when you were a somebody. 😜

Does anyone know if the gameboy games run better using gamekid emulator since last year?

Whitewater Wipeout is like the surfing event in California Games and great fun. It was developed by Giles Goddard, of Argonaut, Nintendo and Starfox fame. My high score so far is a little over 259k. With a little more practice, I should be able to crack the Top 1000 in the online leaderboard.

Spot on. Along with the SNES Mini and its peers it will make an interesting exhibit in a gaming museum, but otherwise I don't see much use.
