Pokemon Sun & Moon sold 1.9 million in first 3 days in Japan (Famitsu), down from X&Y

They're not as good numbers as expected since this number includes the double pack and counts it as two copies.

The age of the 3DS can be the reason why, but then again Black and White did manage 2.6 million at late stage of DS's lifecycle

Japan's economy isn't in great shape, and games industry is on a slope going down right now, just like most luxuries do in cases like this.

I find these numbers somewhat disappointing. There were so many indicators that Pokemon was primed for some growth, and that may still happen over the long term, but these launch sales are lower than I expected.

November is supposed to be a bigger period for sales than October (when XY launched) and September (when BW launched). This is probably why ORAS enjoyed a bigger launch than HGSS.

At the same time, virtually nothing else in the Japanese market is meeting its historical highs these days, and this could be a reflection of that continuing trend.

Just out of curiosity, why is November considered a bigger sales period? In the U.S. I can understand why, but I can't think of any specific reason why Japanese sales would be better during the month.

So what's the typical digital % on games for Japan? I'd wager pokémon will garner slightly higher % than ordinary games. We seriously dont think it sold at least 100-200K on the 3ds store? I doubt it sold less than X&Y including digital.

Edit: Ah, it includes double packs, that might cancel it out. Are the double packs that popular though?

Number is useless without digital sales

exactly. in my circle of friends everyone bought digital..
from the japanese e-shop
of course this is anecdotal. But digital sales did grow over the last few years imho..

Useless? Digital sales are not THAT large (at least seemingly in Japan), a recent example being Monster Hunter Generations which Famitsu estimates sold 300k digitally out of its total 3 mill sales. So they could only be making up 10% which is significant but definitely doesn't make the retail + download cards/double packs number useless.

I hate it when numbers are just short of a big milestone.

Beyond that, the sales are pretty great. There was no indication that Pokémon Go was giving Sun/Moon in Japan a boost over X/Y, as opposed to the rest of the world, so it was expected to be in the same ballpark.

I think those sales at the very end of a system's life are rather impressive. The 3DS came out in February 2011 in Japan and we're in November 2016. The game managed to pull inactive 3DS users back in.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Down from X/Y? The Pokemon fad is finally coming to an end in Japan!

Seriously though, great result. And I'm sure digital sales probably put it over 2 million at least. Maybe even over X/Y.

Because it sold almost 2 million that means it's bad?

Come on

I mean, that was obviously a joke. Come on, learn to laugh at some point. You helped coined the GAF meme whether or not it was intentional, does this seriously still irritate you?

It should be 2 million with digital
But I think it will be down from XY ltd in Japan, but should be higher WW imo

Famitsu updated their report with hardware, total 3DS family hardware sales in the Sun & Moon launch week were 113,987. Added to OP.

People are focusing on FW sales when the reason why the japanese sales of X/Y were disappointing was the lack of legs.

I think at this point is not really a precise indicator without digital sales. I'm pretty sure a lot of people bought it digital, instead when XY come out that digital sales were still pretty uncommon.

This is going to be a complicated thing to assess, given the 3DS's place in the market and the Switch's imminent arrival, but these are good figures nonetheless.

It was always going to be the West that saw growth this time around- Pokémon's always been the biggest thing in Japan.

The references goes back to when poor sales were foolishly postulated as having had an impact due to the weather, so by referencing that, it was the implication you gave

Or.... it was a joke.

Good numbers, of course it's either going to be higher or lower than before, there's not an astronomical gap between any of the previous entries. But of course the number is even higher with digital sales.

And people are definitely underestimating the hype XY got. Pokemon... IN THREE DEE is a much easier selling point than "purple Meowth."

Not really. Pokémon sales usually have a very low amount of digital sales compared to physical. Chris posted Famitsu's eShop estimates for X/Y and ORAS in the Media Create thread and, well, only 1-2% of XY's and ORAS's launch sales were digital (with the ratio climbing up to a still meager 6-7% over time).

Like Yo-kai Watch Pokemon isn't very friendly with digital

Of course, the first week ratio might have shifted a bit more in favor of digital, but we can assume that it'll still be below 5%. It might have sold closer to XY than physical only implies, but in the end the difference isn't very big to begin with.

Sun and Moon's real test will be legs anyway, since XY was a bit weak in that regard.

That was two and three years ago though. Digital has grown a lot since then

How many days did Famitsu track on X/Y's first week in Japan? More than 3?

Because I think this is somewhat crucial to make this analysis

It's funny that some "experts" forget to include digital sales when comparing new sales data with sales from the past. Digital sales are increasing fast and in the near future physical sales will be the exception.

X and Y was tracked for 1 less day (2 days of tracking) since it came out on a Saturday as opposed to SM which came out on a Friday.

This near future of yours is at least 20 years if not more.

Is there really any reason to believe that Sun and Moon would have a substantially larger proportion of digital sales compared to X & Y?

Nintendo lost 2 million sales because of the Eurogamer leak I'M TELLING YA
lol

I know this is a joke, but if S&M continues to track behind X&Y I can genuinely see this forming a "would have been the most successful ever if it wasn't for those press sneak fucks" narrative in the dumber parts of the internet.

It's not that dumb. I have actually seen people say they're not getting Sun & Moon now that Stars has been "revealed".

I mean it won't have the effect those people will claim, but there will be some denting

I think in the stars thread there were <5% posts stating they had canceled their pre-order.

If that is general while the effect is noticeable it's not really enough to push it past Gen VI launch. Then again as we've seen in the past the Japanese are very good as mistranslating news so it is possible for the effect to be magnified.

I guess a comparison point is how is MH doing these days as it is a also a 3DS title and fairly annual in releases. If it is down too it just shows the health of the 3DS or gaming retail market.
