I saw this gif posted on AVForums:

This how SMS expect the rain effects to look once they are finished!

If I were you Mascot, I'd join pCARS as a junior member and enjoy reading the WMD forum for the next 12 months. Size up what MS and Sony offer with their new consoles by which time SMS will have finished development of CARS (Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2 and GTR 3 will most likely be available too) and Nvidia and ATI will have new videocards and decide what platform suits you most.

I might just do that. I've got two laptops and a PC, none of which probably capable of running CARS as anything more than a slideshow, but following the forums could be worth the fee alone.

So is this going to end up on Steam when it's finished? I don't feel like subscribing yet and my backlog needs more PC racing sims.

I know quite a few people in the same situation as yourself and they've all bought junior memberships to read the forum and support SMS.

Who knows, some of your current PC gear may run less resource hungry racing sims (i.e Race 07, rFactor, RBR, GTR 2) and make use of your steering wheel and pedal set used when playing Forza 4.

Cheers.

Finally bit the bullet. Became junior or full member ($25) weekly builds, $25 off price of full game.

Pics look fantastic and as much as I love Forza the visuals are starting to get to me, hell if it were native 1080p I'd be cool, but eh being a bit of a pc fan I dig me some visuals.

i5 750 @ 3.2 (usually @ 3.8-4.0ghz need to replace fans)
4gbram
670GTX

Should be able to rock it with fairly high visuals on a 1080p monitor I would hope.
First impressions aren't good with the file only downloading @ 110-140KBps :(

The only machine worth a damn is my works laptop (Dell Studio XPS) but that's locked down tighter than a nun's chuff and can't be fiddled with. I can't even change the screensaver settings without buying our IT administrator a new house.
If CARS fulfills the promise it's showing, and if it's not released on nextgen consoles, then I'll be wholeheartedly moving over to the dark side with the best hardware money can buy.

I made a little timelapse-y video, but it's still uploading ('round 2 gigs so should be ready in 45 minutes) so here's a few shots in the meantime:

Settings same as before expect I dropped reflections to High. All gameplay and expect for the dof no tinkering whatsoever. 3rd shot is taken with bumper cam in midst of gameplay, IE that's how it looks like when racing. My photographers' skills aren't very good either so excuse me for the poor compositions :)

It's worth noting that the cloud tech is still very much wip; for example here's the next improvement coming:
clooooouds2vvyvy.jpg

The transitions could be a bit smoother, especially on the 240x timescale the clouds tend to appear out of nowhere and a bit suddenly, but it's still absolutely stunning nonetheless.

Here's the video.

Unfortunately I recorded it at half size and youtube ate the rest of the quality so it looks a bit poor. You can see a few bugs in the tech too, but otherwise I think it looks pretty damn good.

I'm in the same boat Mascot. The only decent computer I have is a work one too, and I'm not about to put anything on there.
I did join WMD a while ago and upgraded to a full member. Right now it's just console for me, but I'll get a nice PC to run this in a while. I'm eager to see how this'll pan out on console next year, I really hope they don't dumb it down through a publisher deal.

Runs flawlessly in Directx9
Direct x 11 results in almost no picture, just black 95% of game even the visuals in the menu backgrounds are not being displayed . Running 670 with stock settings in Nvidia 304.48 drivers. Changed in game settings but no change. Any ideas are most welcome :)
Edit: turns out to be a conflict with Stardocks deskscapes.. Wow, game looks phenomenal more so in DX11 mode! Most 'next gen' game I've seen. Wow, no kidding on the pics in this thread. They do look like bullshots :| :D

Nice video even with the small size...if they pull off everything they are trying to do with clouds, it seems to me it will be one of the most ambitious cloud system projects like...ever.

Was just about to ask which video that last gif is from, thanks!

Goddamn this game... rolling clouds in the reflections. Are they planning to add in God Rays as well?

God rays are probably coming and cloud shadows didn't work in that video so that's only a taste of what's to come. Here's what Andy had to say:
The effort is much appreciated, but the added bits contain a few too many of the known issues (especially lighting), fixes for which are coming very soon. If we must go front page (and to be honest I'd prefer to wait a little longer anyway), then I'd much prefer the original short clip (i.e. the first section of the new video).

EDIT: Caterham Classic's coming this week btw.

Whoosh also spotted a nice mockup from Darren White's site

If you join does the discount apply only to the PC version? I'll probably be getting the Wii U version, assuming it's decent enough (...damn thing needs analog triggers for this and GC games).

Mind blowing.

I think I could spend hours just watching that and listening to that soothing music.

Insane-o hot. I mean look at that gif?! Damn.

There's no distribution plan yet because it's still a ways off, but it sounds like they'll probably be doing coupon codes through retailers (Amazon, etc) for anyone who wants a boxed copy. I think it's reasonable to assume that you'll be able to choose whichever flavor you want.

I just read the WiiU pro controller won't have analog triggers. I'm stunned...

Wow the clouds look awesome! The ibl helps a lot too. I hope they can add it. I don't think I'll be able to make any more videos once the clouds are added though. I'm not getting enough fps as it is. I made two more short clips though to try and show my settings in real time.

Short Pagani Huayra trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bDHVs4m724&hd=1
Pagani FPS test 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpF-kuNYTpA&hd=1

A few shots to go along with the mini trailer. As you can see though youtube does compress the videos and they can't quite match the quality of the screenshots.

Where do you get the clouds? I tried playing on several tracks in various weather conditions and my sky is clear as day. Latest patch.

Here's a shot of mine with a nice little livery. Click for direct capture @ original res.

So, this game is going to support mods? graphically looks awesome but without the cars it doesnt really matters to me.
A lot of people with manager levels and above don't want CARS to have mods - Assetto Corsa and rFactor 2 are being built with mods as a selling point.

There should be some sort API/SDK coming at least, but actual mod support isn't still decided. It might be a bit of a problem with the time and money constraints, but it might still unofficially support some extra content like Shit and S2U did.

Wow.

Once the bugs are ironed out that'll look absolutely phenomenal.

Also am I crazy in finding GT5 a bit more visually impressive in certain areas still? I think it's just the lighting and tracks that let it down a bit.

I guess I shouldn't look at the game too much from a visual standpoint yet, especially since we're still quite a way off.

Well I still think that GT5 Photo Mode is still above anything else even though CARS is edging closer and closer, but still the lighting, the materials, the colors and especially tracks need work, but I've no doubt that GT5 will be history once they've finished and properly polished all the content.

Talking about effects, theres one effect missing in day time:

Road Mirages, when you see a non existent pools of water in the distance giving of reflections and air swirling.

I might be wrong, but I remember someone mentioning it and it should be coming at some point, but not anytime soon.

Yeah, I think I've posted a couple of times on the forum for mods and against super ultra DRM, but there seem to be lots of people with 2-3 manager or senior manager packs, so I'm a super minority with the single manager account. And that's how voting works anyway, my opinions presumably just aren't as popular as alternative opinions. It's not like it's unfair. :p

*edit* As mclaren777 pointed out below, the car selection seems good to me so I'm not UNHAPPY without mods, I just think in general mod support is a nice enhancement for games if it's feasible.

It seems very unlikely that it will. And what kinds of cars would you be interested in? I think pCARS currently has the best lineup I've ever seen.

What's the current list? I'm well behind the times here.

Also, is it planned that the circuits will eventually be officially licenced, with real sponsors, hoardings, advertising etc? The current made-up generic ones are a little... odd.

What racing disciplines are SMS including or at least thinking of?

Below is the plan from the original design doc. Some things have obviously changed (drift and rally are gone), so take it with a grain of salt.

I will try the game today, paid the minimum level (10 €). I hope the build is not too outdated and that my HD 5750 GPU can handle it with good graphics.

P CARS absolutely blows GT5 out of the water on mid-day (sunny) conditions. GT5 really excels in dawn/dusk, conditions.

I think GT5 still looks great taking into account it is running on 2005 hardware, but I really hope PD is taking a close look at this game (yeah right). PCARS is doing a lot of things right.

Andy Garton already knows about it and we seem to have an understanding – if I screw up again, I'll be fully IP-banned.
