PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

This thread has actually made me a feel a little sad as my PS2 appears to be on it's last legs. Some games have started taking forever on loading screens and others run choppy even though they run fine on other systems. I know it's stupid to get emotional over a video game console since they can be replaced so easily, but it's the same launch fat model that I got when I was only ten years old. I think I might just go buy a slim model and keep the fat model somewhere. There's just so many memories I have from playing on it, that I couldn't bear to see it die.

That's what I did. A little while ago, I noticed Walmart.com still had slims, so I ordered one.

Ah, the PS2... I was enamored with my DC, and when I heard that the PS2 killed the DC, I swore I'd never buy a Sony product ever again. I was a child prone to stupid ideas. What can I say? I went with the GC, and as fantastic as some the games were on it, it starved me for games. It made me desperate. Suddenly all the talk of the PS2's IMMENSE library started to raise an eyebrow. By this time the slim model was at an attractive price point and there was something else coming into play... I was becoming a car fanatic, and GT4 was soon to release. I couldn't deny it anymore. I needed a PS2.

But that was it, and I convinced myself that I only needed it for GT4. I'd own a PS2 begrudgingly. I couldn't like it for anything else... I-If only the GC had some more games to play... What's this Shadow of the Colossus? *buys a used copy* OMG! What the hell sort of transforming experience was that?! I needed moar! Okami? Katamari? Yes, please. Silent Hill? Ratchet & Clank? Oh lawd... Put it in my veins! Dual analogs, where have you been all my life!

Eventually, it became the system I owned the most games for. Now, I proudly proclaim that I love the PS2. Sure, it may have contributed to the DC's quick demise, but at least it made up for it with many memorable gaming experiences.

How is the battle system/ soundtrack?

Music is okay, Nothing special.

Battle is turn based. You can fight in or out of your Tank. Your Tank has A lot of Fire Power and Defense but in order to use your Skills and Items you have to get out of your tank.

Your Tanks is fully customizable. You can change every part (Weapons, chassis, Engine) except for the frame. You can even upgrade each individual part in Mod Shops. You can even re-paint them. It will open a Paint like program and let you mess with the Tanks skin texture.

The game is completely non-linear. You pick what Bosses you want to fight and when. Branching paths and alternate endings. There is no over arching story but tons of small little stories and missions through out the world. And the world reacts to decisions and non decisions you make.

An example...
There is a boss that is a leader of a army, I didn't think I was strong enough to take him on when the bounty was put on his head so I forgot about him. A few hours later I go into a town and suddenly his army rolls in and takes it over. And this keeps happening to more towns until you go kick his ass and then his army falls apart and people run them out of town.

Its just so refreshing to play a non-liner open world JRPG.

It has a boss called Tankasaurus. I need to buy this. Think I used to confuse this with Steambot Chronicles.

Do you collector types ever sell games? I remember buying Futurama on clearance at a Circuit City for $5. It's worth like 10x that now, and while I don't like selling games, I have no problem parting with the shit ones, lol.

I have sold some stuff, but ended up regretting it all, so now I dont do it anymore :)

Was a bit disappointed with the library compared to SNES or PS1, but it's like night and day compared to this gen. I think I was starting to get disheartened with gaming during that time, though now that I have more of a taste (and less time) for gaming, going back through the PS2's library has been me discovering lots of great backlogged games I couldn't get into the first time through.

Gonna start Digital Devil Saga 2 next week... I beat the original but never the second.

Favorite game on the system is without a doubt this:

Dragon_Quest_VIII_Journey_of_the_Cursed_King.jpeg

Followed by Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Gradius 5, GOD HAND, and ESPGaluda.

Just started playing Metal Saga.

This game is huge! How did a Post-Apocalyptic non-linear JRPG where you pilot Tanks and have Dogs with Canons strapped to there back completely fly under my Radar like this!?

bought smt nocturne from amazon for only 18 bucks, was really surprised to find it that low given that it was hovering around the 30 range like 3-4 years ago. i figure now would be the best time to scoop up what you can for ps2 games, all my local gamestops are no longer selling them.

From what I've heard, it's not a VERY bad game. It's just that it is a platformer and nothing like say...Legend of Mana. It is not a 'real' mana game, if you get what I mean.

Thats fine by me. Looks pretty good AND has a soundtrack by Kenji Ito, so as long as it isnt completely busted or just not fun...i'm good.

All of the Shin Megami Tensei PS2 games are reprinted on Amazon US now and again, so their prices are around $20. Snap those up while you still have the chance.

Hey thread followers, what are your favorite compilation games on PS2? Taito Legends 2 is great IMO.

that's the one with Elevator Action, right? damn fine one, but i wanna say vol 1 has Rastan so it's a toss up for me.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is amazing though, it has like 90% of the games you'd want from them, and for a song! last one i have to get is the Data East one, but it's Wii only i think.

Such Nostalgia this thread gave me.

One of my favorite consoles, thanks for making this thread fellow GAFfer.

I remember when my brother in law got his PS2 with Metal Gear Solid 2 without a memory card. I played and replayed with him the starting scene over and over, then he finally got a memory card and started getting more games.

Myself however had to wait a bit more to get mine... but when I got it it was the PS2 bundle with the USB Headset and this one:

YgSCaqh.jpg

I had such a great time playing that game and oh, so many other games followed after that one. I remember playing some good RPG's too, two of them in the late PS2 era that I started but never finished:

OJDVViul.jpg

vnpYdUPl.jpg

Then I did something wrong. I sold my PS2... :(

I said to myself that I did not had the time to play anymore, I was working and things at home were hard... for moments I was the only source of income in my house, I was tired, stressed and without time. I sold my PS2 with all my games and never looked back until months later when I found I shouldn't have done it. I still to this day regret this decision but times were dark and I had to do it... I also love the PS2 look, such a great looking console.

...There was however one game of mine that survived all this time and it's still with me, I took a photo for you GAF:

MPWbFOTl.jpg

I keep telling to myself how I want and should get a PS2 anywhere since it's cheap but right I simply can't let nostalgia hit me and I can't spend more money right now but it was a great system. I hope one day to be able to get one again and play some titles that I've missed or never finished...

Thanks for reading fellow GAFfers.

still bummed that this copy of Gradius 5 is a blue disc that my PS3 won't read, hooking the PS2 back up in the near future just to see this one upscaled!

Nice thread!

(Did you know the towers represent the amount of games you've played?)
No shit, really? Mind... blown!

I've got a question about the DualShock 2 Controllers. I hardly play on my PS2 these days, so the system and my controllers are collecting dust next to my TV. After some months of not touching the controllers the analog sticks get really... "sticky" and kinda greasy, literally. Really disgusting. But I have no clue why this happens to the sticks. I am able to clean the sticks to some extend with a wet cloth but a little "sticky" feel remains, regardless how hard I try to clean them.
Does anybody know why the sticks get "sticky"?

Another question: the left half of one of my controllers stopped working completely (D-pad and L1/L2 are not working, left stick is just fine). Is there any way to fix this? I thought of opening the controller and clean the contacts/PCB with a cotton stick and alcohol. I vaguely remember that one of my friends did exactly this back in the days to clean his controller. Is this a good idea?

quick question does anyone use a Component Cable with their ps2 atm im using RGB and it looks shitty on LCD so im wondering do all games work through the component cable or is there compatibility issues?

Earth Defense Force 2
Shit was crazy for PS2!

I've always wanted to play that. Not so sure about the spiders though.

I haven't heard of any compatibility issues. All games play through the component cables.

Taito Legends 2 has Balloon Bomber, so it gets 10000x points for that. It really is an incredible compilation though - 40 some-odd games... from the classics to the obscure. I think Taito is definitely one of the most underrated arcade developers.

Taito made Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move, that alone makes them great as far as I'm concerned.

Oh man...I know I need to replace Maximo 1 because of a giant property of blockbuster security label on it...that might cause problems in the future, but I just looked at my Army of Zin, and its got...front damage.

jCpZ5Ud9iUfT0.jpg

Can this happen from having cases stacked onto of another? I havent played it in a very long time, but dont remember if it had that damage when I bought it or not.

This thread is gonna pass every other appreciation thread no doubt about that.

I'm sure many of you have bought 3rd party 16MB Memory Cards. I know I had to after my 8MB filled up with games saves to the brim.

I still have about 20 or more PS2 games in storage and my PS2 is put into a box for sentimental values.

I'm thinking of picking up a slim for fun as they are rather cheap and I still have some games to play that are not on PSN.

I must have spend over 1000 hours in this system alone.

Didn't get a Wii for 1 year after launch or a PS3 until after the slim so my PS2 got plenty of loving.

Makes me want to break it out and play it. But the drive is probably already dead.

I must have gone through 5 PS2 in my life. 3 of which were rentals and 1 was my Uncles before I got my own.

I didn't get a PS2 until a little into the HD generation, but I just had to go through and play MGS3 before 4 came out. Since then I have gathered a small collection, but full of games I kinda want to play or have loved.

Some highlights to me are
Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4
Megaman X Collection
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3
Final Fantasy X
Xenosaga Episode 1 and 2

Playing the newer, uninspired, bland Silent Hill games that were not done by their original creators has made me appreciate Silent Hill 4. Because unlike all those Silent Hill 2 rip offs in Homecoming, Downpour etc. they actually tried something fresh in Silent Hill 4, as it feels nothing like previous games, or games that came after it.

Some of the backtracking is still annoying and there are some glitches but its still better than every non Team Silent SH game by a mile.

Dont forget that the soundtrack is much better than anything we've heard in awhile. Well aside from Shattered Memories, that was pretty good.

I love Silent Hill 4, I feel like that game gets a lot of undeserved hate. I mean yes... It was originally meant to be a spinoff and not part of the main series but damned if it don't have the soul of a SH game! I sill think it has some of the best enemies in the series.

How is everyone playing their PS2? I still have my fat model and its original AV cables, but I want to get the best picture and sound out of it for when I go through my backlog. I grabbed some cheap component cables off of Amazon and can't get anything to work right-- the blues just don't show up, making everything green, red, and washed out.

What cables are reliable and recommended? Without spending a fortune, I mean.

R-Type Final is on its way, picked up Nightshade and Siren both for almost a buck a piece.

speaking of: gamestop says they're gonna stop taking PS2 games june 1st (tomorrow) i believe, i'm gonna keep an eye on cheapassgamer to see what they do to unload all that stock with the new systems coming in...local managers told me they could do B2G2 or just take 50%+ off, could be the perfect time to finish off your collection. store near me has Fatal Frame, SMT DDS, Punisher, SH3, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Castlevania Curse of Darkness and a few others i'd been holding out for.
