Racist calls Sam Seder to defend the Bell Curve!

Link: https://youtu.be/dlN9plBx6Ho
In this Majority Report clip, a racist calls in to teach Sam a thing or two about brains.

"Next, Richwine actually goes to those heroes of modern racialism, Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray, and their pseudoscientific 1994 book The Bell Curve. If you looked no further, you wouldn’t know that much of the research cited in that book was primarily supported by The Pioneer Fund, a reportedly neo-Nazi organization devoted to eugenics, whose founder, Wickliff Draper, was an advocate for sending American blacks back to Africa. You wouldn’t know that Charles Murray is revered only on the far-right fringe of social science; to many other scholars, he’s a crackpot who’s been blaming the poor, and egalitarian social policies towards the poor, for American social decline for decades. He also claims to have discovered a system for ranking innate creativity that is completely free of personal preference or cultural bias (a system that, according to him, proves that Beethoven was “objectively” more accomplished than Mozart; using this infallible system he found — surprise! — that virtually everything of importance in world history was accomplished by white European males). You wouldn’t know that the “science” of The Bell Curve has been thoroughly debunked by real biologists and social scientists, most notably here and here and here and here, but in many other venues and publications as well."

Just pure "oh my god" at the caller's cognitive dissonance.

Love it when Sam takes these callers

A bunch of hateful fucks are emboldened now and didnt bother to do any research before calling in to talk about "muh supremacy". My FB feed is full of asswagons going on and on about racial realism, biologicaly binary genders, and other shitty derplord concepts.

Before that "Crypto Jew" stuff, the caller said the APA said the Bell Curve findings were BS, but the APA report ended up agreeing with most of what the book said IIRC, they just said there wasn't evidence the difference in IQ between races was genetic.

I kind of love how the alt-right language got flipped against them like this, because they get so fucking upset

I honestly get triggered recently by people constantly saying we should have empathy with people like this caller. I know resentment/mockery isn't a solution but I'm honestly at a loss on how I'd deal with stupidity like that.

Do people say that? The large amount of audible laughter in the clip is how I expect most people would respond.

Not keenly aware of Sam Seder or this show but if I were to take a guess my gut tells me they lean left.

Moderates are the ones who say we need empathy and more to offer to these people to bring them over to our side.

He should have called Sam Harris instead. They could have reasoned together calmly about the inherent inferiority of brown people and how black lives don't matter.

Sam Harris is a pretty smart dude. Any source on him being a racist?

He recently did an interview with Murray, author of The Bell Curve, in which he didn't really do anything to refute what Murray said, even when it got rather racist at points, and asserted that "these are the facts" at some of Murray's statements that...aren't...facts of scientific consensus

The kid pushing on with the cuck stuff and even trying to explain his jokes as if they didn't already understand was incredible. Like he thought he was actually getting anywhere with that stuff while everyone was just continuing to mock him.

... and I think... he didn't get that Sam was playing along with it to mock him? Even Sam seemed to reach his breaking point and it just stopped being funny when the caller seemed to take the black guys thing seriously and tried to make it a point of liberals fetishizing blacks.

I'm currently looking for a transcript of that conversation. However, I came across this writeup that seems to refute the viewpoint that Murray's conversation with Harris is a racist or the science they talked about is wrong. http://quillette.com/2017/06/11/no-voice-vox-sense-nonsense-discussing-iq-race/

Specifically this quote from Murray's book
In sum: If tomorrow you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that all the cognitive differences between the races were 100 percent genetic in origin, nothing of any significance should change. The knowledge would give you no reason to treat individuals differently than if ethic differences were 100 percent environmental. By the same token, knowing that the differences are 100 percent environmental in origin would not suggest a single program or policy that is not already being tried. It would justify no optimism about the time it will take to narrow the existing gaps. It would not even justify confidence that genetically based differences will not be upon us within a few generations. The impulse to think that environmental sources of difference are less threatening than genetic ones is natural but illusory.

This seems to show that Murray's view is far from racism. Unless it's considered racist for science to point out differences in races?

Oh my fucking god.

There is no scientific basis for differences in races. It is all environmental/ social construct.

It is racist.

I skim-read every article on the front page of this blog and I would summarize their position as "sophisticated academic writing to support conservative culture wars, and also most of the writers are vegan for some reason".

Here's a breakdown of the front page articles by category:

Conservatives Are Being Persecuted By Liberals, Especially in Academia, Also Bookstores Don't Stock Enough Conservative Books, And Also Modern Scholars Just Study Nonsense Fields Like Critical Theory, Which Is Bad, Because It's Liberal, And Also Gender Isn't Real Because Only Science Is Real: 10
Race and IQ: 2
Islamic Terror Is Real Bad: 1.5
Actually, Europe Is Pretty Bad (Mostly Because of Muslim Immigrants): 3.5
The Alt-Right Isn't So Bad: 1
Meat Is Bad: 2
Other: 1

There is no scientific basis for race. The scientific opinion on race is that it is only a cultural construct. It varies from place to place, and also from time to time. There were times in US history where Jewish, Irish and Italians were not considered white people. That has changed.
The problem is, that skin color is a continuous spectrum, and also a changing one.
Skin color can change by how you eat, how much sun you get, etc.

Makes as much sense as breaking down races by height. We'll have the 6 foot race, and the 5 foot race. Don't ask me where the 5'6'ers go.

There is no scientific basis for race, so trying to put a classification on intelligence based on race is nonsense.

The irony of the bell curve is that white racists use it to try to explain differences in economic development between "white" and "black" countries and also as a basis for informing policy.

The twist being that by those same "standards" white people would be inferior to East Asians.

Oh, but it doesn't apply in that direction because reasons.

The Majority Report is top notch. Seder and Brooks have good interviews nearly every day. This clip is actually a few months old but recently reposted to the YouTube page.

But there is a scientific basis for the differences in races. Why do you think Irish people are prone to rosacea? Or why Ashkenazi Jewish people are hugely overrepresented as Nobel Prize winners?

We really don't know to what extent IQ is heritable or influenced by genetic factors. I think most people working in the field acknowledge that genetics are somewhat influential, but even in the Bell Curve, the authors say that they remain agnostic as to the weight to be attached to genetics versus environmental factors. They also correctly say that even if there were minor genetic differences in IQ between people of different ancestry, it absolutely wouldn't make any difference as to how we treat other people.

The argument against Murray really isn't that it's 'junk science' or 'largely discredited' because it's not. The argument, which is dishonestly veiled in the notion that the book is some white supremacist polemic, is that his conclusions might embolden racists who take its conclusions and package them in a superficial, pseudoscientific manner. That's a fine argument. It's an important argument and it's not one that's helped by willfully misrepresenting the actual arguments that are made.

EDIT: Should clarify, I do not mean I take racial categories as they have been socially constructed in the past as valid constructs. Most are not. But it's of course true that there exist different peoples who are more or less genetically predisposed towards certain illnesses, physical attributes etc.

In my experience it's a waste of time and effort to engage these people too. I don't understand how people keep putting forward the talk to them b.s.

Maybe works for others but I just get exasperated and call the fuckers out.

Please.

We've all heard Sam Harris speak... He's far from an idiot. You can disagree with his viewpoints and conclusions, but he is not a stupid man.

... Fair point in regards to Carson, however.

Neither of those are opinions Sam Harris holds. You might disagree with all his conclusions, but attack what he actually says, not some imagined straw man version

Incorrect. Pretend scientist Sam Harris agrees with Charles Murray that black people are on average dumber than white people and he hates black lives matter because a cop was rude to him once.
