There was a video that showed the devs testing out 4-player split-screen, but it's not in the game at the moment.

Played for about 45 minutes, already have some issues;
- I don't know what it is but I can't stand the motion blur in this. I can turn it off only by turning off all the post processing which I don't want.
- The settings are pretty abysmal all around. I can't remember the last time I've played a game didn't have full screen options or specific resolutions. No keybindings or button mapping either unless I'm missing something.
- The AI tapping you and spinning you around feels really shitty.
- Not a big fan of the soundtrack so far.

Outside of that it controls really well and is pretty fun, but I don't know about dropping $30 on this. I'll dig into the ini files tomorrow and hopefully find some fixes to some of my complaints.

I ended up buying Formula Fusion on Early Access with Steam, pretty sweet.

Basic mechanics are straight up Wipeout, so at least I know they have the Wipeout core gameplay down pat still.

Couldn't turn off the motion blur in game for some reason though, at 60 fps don't really need such heavy motion blur.

I mentioned the lack of being able to change the resolution in my review. Since it is running on the unreal engine 4, you can change that via ini. They are going to be addressing the aggressive AI and mapping in a future update.

Thanks, yeah I saw that this morning.

I played it for another hour and I think I'm just going to refund it. The core handling and sense of speed is great, but everything else isn't doing much for me. Maybe I'll try again down the road when they tweak things, also hopefully they think about putting a motion blur toggle in.

Thanks for the link, but for some reason I cannot get those tweaks to work. No matter how I edit the configuration file, the game always starts at 1080p on a 4K display/desktop. The developers definitely need to patch it.

Looks great from TB's video, wishlisted.
As someone who's never played a WipOut game, can someone explain to me how it differs from F-Zero? I always assumed they were pretty similar. And which side is Fast Racing Neo on? Probably gonna pick that up when it comes to retail.

The most immediate difference would be the sense of weight and momentum. In F-ZERO you can play in a very twitchy and reactive manner. There are few situations in F-Zero where an action you've taken leaves you committed and unable to correct. This isn't the case WipEout, RedOut and the like, where throwing your ship left results in just the sort of weight distribution you'd expect, and pulling back from that is anything but instant.

FAST Racing NEO sits on the nonsense side of the spectrum. :p
It's a collection of gameplay mechanics and choices that honestly don't sit well with each other imo.

No offence meant. I didn't know that Steam had a 2 hour refund window.

I'm a sci-fi racer fan not a PC user :)

Gotcha. I thought you might've been assuming something else of me based off recent interesting discussion concerning refund methods, my mistake.

I think I saw a setting for game res = desktop res in that same ini file, try changing that to true. You could try making the file read only as well, I've had to do that before for UE games.

Anyone know what Speed Trap +100 is for in the score mode?

Finally understood how you get more points in score mode and I'm loving it now - you get the +10 for boost, +200 for perfect lap, +50 for a clean lap, +100 for best time (which I think means you had the best lap time (per lap) out of the racers), then you get a bonus for position (over 1000 for #1).... but I occasionally saw speed trap popup and can't think what it is, anyone know?

I think I saw a setting for game res = desktop res in that same ini file, try changing that to true. You could try making the file read only as well, I've had to do that before for UE games.

I think I may have figured out what's going on, and I'd wager it's happening to (perhaps a whole lot of) other people, but they haven't realized it yet. The game only launches after a chain of executables that begins with "redout.exe", and ends with "redout-Win64-Shipping." The former launches at the desired resolution, but somewhere in between the two the resolution switches to 1080p.

I don't have the knowledge to get around/troubleshoot something like that. I've tried running "redout-Win64-Shipping" directly, but it still goes through the chain, and fails to launch the game at 4K. :/

The game defaults to using SteamVR and Rift owners don't get the option of choosing "Other VR" mode to use the Oculus Runtime directly. I saw a tip somewhere that mentioned if you uninstall SteamVR, it will fall back to using Oculus Runtime. I've been having other issues with SteamVR so I decided to try this and see if it worked. It did, and it also had a huge performance benefit. I was able to turn up several graphics options. And it could be my imagination, but the UI looked a little more crisp as well.

Any other Rift owners want to check this out and report back for a sanity check?

I agree it definitely deserves more love. It's a great game. I wouldn't say that it scratches my F-Zero itch or is a must for fans of that franchise, but for what it is, it's very good indeed. Not without it's issues, but I can forgive the ones it has.

Man I fucking LOVE this game.

When i first started it I was immediately met with crushing disappointment, felt like I had wasted my money cause it's the kind of game I'm probably not going to play much of...

I was amazed at how it looked and felt though so I kept at it, getting frustrated, then less so, and less...until an hour and a half later it finally all "clicked" and I was drifting around corners at a 1000 mph with a huge shit eating grin on my face.

Easily the most satisfying racing controls I've played with in over a decade.

Everyone is noting Wipeout/F zero, but I'm getting MAJOR Star Wars episode 1 podracer vibes from it, I loved that game as a kid and this is the only thing since then that has really scratched that itch, it also helps that there's a bonafide podracer looking car to select lol.

Oh shit, i don't need comments like this! I loved Podracer on PC with my new VooDoo Banshee and i even went out and bought a flight stick for it. My housemate played it then went out and bought the game and a cheapo flight stick too. We became amazingly good at it and he even picked up on my habit of mumbling "Don't like it, don't like it,..." when going stupidly fast. Good times. Makes me think back to XG3 on GC, the only other racing game i've really gotten into aside from the first few Wipeout games.

YUP, It's the only vehicle I've used so far. My N64 was the Star Wars Episode 1 Racer bundle and I played the hell out of it. I still remember when I finally beat and unlocked Sebulba.

Just unlocked class IV vehicles....

I just got the game yesterday and I have played it around two hours.

It not only scratches that WipEout itch, but it feels so good to control after you learn to use both thumbsticks properly that it might just create it's own.

The only downside so far is that the game doesn't do a good job explaining to you the controllers or easing you into the it. Other than that I'm loving it!

A total of 160 changes from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2

DESIGN AND BALANCING
- Further increased max structure for all Koeniggswerth ships

- Further increased wall friction slightly
- Reduced wall repulsion power a bit, high-speed collision are less bouncy

- Added quality settings for portals (you can also turn them off now)
- Reviewed Abruzzo lighting (tracks should be easier to read)
- Minor visual fixes in Volcano
- Added Score points-per-second indication on the race HUD

AI
- Fixed bug for which AIs would suddenly become dumb and freak out during jumps, constantly exploding
- Fixed bug for which AIs would fail to control their pitch on slopes, causing a sparklefest
- Reviewed AI ship upgrades and powerup level balancing system: they are now much closer to the ones that the player has equipped

MULTIPLAYER
- Added lobby chat
- Fixed bug for which rapidly toggling "ready" in multiplayer lobby would break the menu
- Fixed random crashes when joining a lobby
- Updated "in race" percentage indicator to be more accurate

BUGFIXES
- Solved framerate-dependant turbo boost strength
- Fixed bug for which a corrupt save file would crash the game (but in this case we just delete your savegame, don't play around with it)
- Solved Abruzzo performance issues
- Fixed performance drops when close to teleporting portals
- Fixed bug for which, in Score races, players and AI would be granted perfect laps even when exploding
- Fixed handling bug for Class II, III and IV Koeniggswerth ships
- Full Optionals contract fixed, you can actually fail it now
- Fixed "Better than Ever" achievement
- Fixed bug for which the music would sometimes fail to play if using Asera (yes, it was weird)

OTHERS
- Added Simplified Chinese support
- Multiple localization issues fixed
- Minor fixes, which is what devs say when they are too lazy to go check the task board for something they may have forgot.

I hope they add ghost mode next for time attack.

Can't wait to pick this up when it goes on sale and is a lliitttllee bit cheaper; until then I have Formula Fusion. Anyone else still playing Redout?

I've gotten all the upgrades and ships and silver or higher for the game and I'll be going for gold on the events but I won't stop after that. It'll be that game I fire up to satisfy that high speed flow itch, like wipeout did. Looking forward to doing mostly time trials once the events are down. They seem to be updating it quite regularly too.

I went back to formula fusion which I only got briefly before red out and didn't play for a while...and it's just not there yet at all in comparison imo.

- Fixed a bug for which the ship would respawn in a very awkward position in Volcano
- There was a bug for which if you managed to restart the game while the ship was exactly at the beginning of the exploding animation, the ship in question would resurrect during the restart in the exact same state. Which means you were driving an exploded ship. Weird stuff
- Fixes various crashes
- Statistics should have numbers which actually make some sort of sense now. Maybe
- FOV doesn't explode anymore while turbo boosting
- Fixes some issues with various contracts

Does anyone have any information about how Redout runs on lower end hardware? Some UE4 games let you turn down the rendering resolution and squeak out a lot of performance, so I'm curious about that.

I'm not sure how it will run or look but you can turn down rendering to 40%.

Where is the hype for this game? It is amazing. I'm hoping there is more buzz when the console version is released, it deserves it.
I just heard about this game in the 'hidden gems' thread and I'm disappointed it's taken me this long. :( The game looks wonderful and much needed.

New tracks plus customization in new update, that upgrades the game to Redout Enhanced Edition
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2m06oKmaxs
34BigThings is proud to announce that today will be released the first DLC for Redout, which becomes Redout Enhanced Edition, for a price of zero bananas!

Redout Enhanced includes a whole new racing environment: Europa, the icy moon of Jupiter. Pilots are challenged to dive into an alien ocean and face its 5 new spectacular tracks. The single player Career mode has been extended to insert Europa events in the racing calendar, and it now features more than 100 unique races. But it doesn’t end here.

Redout Enhanced also includes ship liveries as collectable Steam items. Players can obtain new liveries by playing, 8 unique for each ship in each racing class, which makes them no less than… 192! Two extra base liveries will be automatically granted to everyone, so players won’t need to get collecting in order to start customizing their hovership from day zero.

Also there's a demo now for those on the fence :)

New tracks theme is growing on me, wasn't expecting new stages already! They've been working on this constantly since release. Great devs.

Just played the demo a few times. Definitively gonna buy it especially because it worked so well with my OR. Weird thing though, it suddenly appeared as 25% off for a price of$26.24. However when I add it to my cart it it has the old price of $34 something. Is this a glitch or is Steam prepping it for a sale?

EDIT:

Yep-it's on sale. Bought!

Demo changed my mind on this game, bought it and I'm having a blast but I still crash into walls quite a bit.

I'm having trouble figuring this game out, is it a case of F-Zero where you never use the brake and I'm just not turning correctly or do I have some other way to pick speed back up quickly after slowing down for a turn?

It's weird that I'm having so much trouble with this. Also, how do you get platinum medals?

All that said, the game definitely doesn't really feel like Wipeout nor F-Zero, it's some weird middle-ish ground. Either way, it's gorgeous and the sense of speed is fantastic.
