See I was sure Animal Crossing New Leaf would never miss Holiday 2012
There's honestly no comparison between the two games. Animal Crossing is merely "popular", and was released on a system that was selling sufficiently. There was nowhere near as much urgency in ensuring a Christmas release. Smash Bros. is a surefire system-seller akin to Mario Kart, for a system that is under-performing. Nintendo cannot afford for Smash Bros. U to miss Christmas.
The reason the Mario Kart 8 free game promotion existed was because Nintendo need to do everything they can to convince people to buy a Wii U. If they're prepared to give away first-party games, there's no way in hell they'll be willing to pass up Smash Bros. being out by Christmas.
