Think of Mortal Kombat's story mode without any fighting and it's anime as hell

Technically there are fights. You just don't play them and instead there just well animated cutscenes, which I honestly prefer from the former.

You're not thinking outside the box enough OP. These are 3D models. You can do so much more than a simple beat-em-up with re-purposed sprites. Why not a character action game?

A traditional beat 'em up is more likely to have an arcade structure.

Of course, a game in the vein of DMC but using an arcade game's structure is one of my dreams, so maybe ASW should do that.
