Do you mean the 100 coins? In each world you have to collect 100 coins for a star, you can keep going after getting it. So every time you are doing Collect the Red Coins you might as well get 100 too.

hows does it play with the 3DS analog nub - the controls on the reg DS are why I never got into it.

But still shit compared to N64/GC controller. And you have to hold a run button.
