The UK is set to get its first 24-hour eSports TV channel as the world of competitive computer game playing takes its next step towards mainstream popularity.

The new channel, Ginx eSports TV, will get a major boost at launch with Sky and ITV expected to take minority stakes in the business.

“GINX eSports TV aims to add significant mainstream TV exposure to the fast growing eSports ecosystem,” said Ginx TV chief executive Michiel Bakker.

“I am also delighted about the prospect of Sky and ITV joining our shareholder roster, it goes without saying that the combined media footprint and expertise of both presents a significant opportunity for us to make a bigger impact, faster.”

The channel, which will launch in the sports section of Sky’s electronic programme guide, will air tournaments including Turner’s ELeague, which includes the world’s biggest competitive game Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

Sounds good to me, I'll certainly be tuning in to watch the CS:GO games. More exposure is only a good thing.

It's not the first.

xleague.tv was the first. And it did terrible for ratings. This was back when Halo 3 was getting contracts with espn on mlg.

Success depends on the talent they hire to present it I think. You can watch this stuff online just fine, with chat and adult language already. They're not going to be able to show fighting games before the water shed because that community is a liability.

Wondering how long this one will stay in business. last big esport broadcasting effort was ESGN tv and that imploded very quickly.

Was about to post this. I actually used to love xleague.tv at the time. Maybe it was because I didn't use a PC all that often at the time but it used to have good content with trailers and top 10 game shows and stuff. Competitive PGR 3 and Forza 3 were fun to watch too.

I got rid of Sky last year, it was so expensive for how much I used it.

The new channel, Ginx eSports TV

Even the name sounds like the sort of channel you'd find in the listings somewhere between Conspiracy TV and the Nollywood channel.

I'm vaguely reminded of Game Network UK, which eventually gave up, dropped all its gaming content and became a soft porn network.
