With the awesome game that is Resistance! A few questions to for fellow PS3 owning gaffers. I did not get a warranty on it since the warranty was mad expensive. How is the hardware? Any problems I should look out for? I haven't seen anyone complain about it like with the 360 or the PS2. Any tips and ideas on the first things I should do after I hook it up?

nope. none - hook it up with HDMI and Digital Optical cable for surround sound - enjoy.

Zero problems so far. Things runs like a charm and absolutely no noise except for the HDD, which is barely noticeable itself. Congrats on your purchase and I look forward to seeing you online in Resistance! :lol

i don't know anyone who is having problems with it. it seems to be remarkably stable.

i didn't buy a warranty for mine, and the only reason i would consider it now is to get a re-design a few years from now. Circuit City's warranty used to give you a store gift card for the original value of the system if it went bad. So you could use that if a better revision came out.

But as far as "manufacturer's defects" are concerned, I think the included warranty will be fine.

my ps3 does funky things once in a while, but has been running very well other than some strange occruances.

Welcome friend:), it maybe too early since you just got it but we'll be playing Resistance tonight 9est/6pst if you want to jump on. It's a laid back atmosphere where nobody gets mad at anyone's mistakes. The hardware is awesome, I leave my system on over night sometimes and the fan's second gear never kicks in.

Should be alright.

No problems here and defective machines aren't showing up on GAF 24/7, so I'd say it's a solid machine.

From what i read, they are not a lot of complain
Look like sony did a very good with the ps3.

I'm not sure how but some of the 4 prong wire things in the usb ports are bent back in mine. So now the usb ports don't work and I have to send it in for repair.

i didnt get the warranty.... i trust Sony on this one and so far, no problems watsoever.

One thing i dislike is the way music and images are organized.

I wish you could sort them by folder :)
(Any NIN fan would feel the pain considering there are dozens of Halos w/ gazillions of bootlegs and bonus :D )

And if you can, plz plz plz tell me how!!!

on a side note, how do you people group your music...?

Buy a headset so you can speak to people while playing Resistance. Believe it or not their are alot of people who talk. Not nearly as much as say everyone on XBL but it does add to the enjoyment online.

I picked up mine today too. :) I also thought about the extended warranty, but didn't go for it in the end despite the hard sell at the counter. Got the 60g, Resistance (so awesome!), Motostorm (seemed cool SP but i'm a little concerned I tried the first track 3 times already and haven't qualified to move on... only finished third on my last attempt) and Casino Royale on BD since I need the movie anyway.

Very happy with the console itself so far, setup was pretty easy, updates and signing up for the PSN was not nearly as lengthy and annoying as I thought it was going to be. And Resistance is freaking great already, hopefully I'll never need to pick up COD3 again as long as I live.

Yeah I plan to get one this week. I won't be coming online for awhile, prob not till next weekend. Can't wait though!! I will also have to play it on my SDTV for now, I bought a sick monitor(HDCP compliant) with the HDMI-DVI hookup but I have no speakers for the sound. So I will get the speakers and headset at the same time. Is Resistance good enough for multiple playthroughs? I will prob beat it on my SD but once I get my speakers, I want to beat it again in HD to see it and hear it in full glory:D

Same thing happened to my first unit... took it back to the store and exchanged it, I was still within 30 days.

I am veeeery careful with my USB ports now.

On the headset issue, buy yourself a basic USB headset for PC and use it instead of an expensive blue-tooth headset with limited battery life, imho. I was researching the BT headsets for awhile until I found out the same USB headset I use on my PC now and then will work just fine on the PS3. Plug it in, it works. The PS3 even knows the make and model of the headset---I assume that is part of the handshake for USB devices.

My unit seems rock solid. People can bitch about the cost/speed of blu-ray vs. DVD, but you gotta love a near silent optical drive.

It has a 1 yr warranty so you should be good....if you want more safety, maybe get a sony warranty right before 1st yr expires.

Only issues I have been reading about is the damn controller spazzing, and vry few freezes while playing blu-ray. i think the blu-ray might just be firmware that needs updating. Mines been rock solid.

It is a slick little setup, and can only get better.

No worries, I know a place where I could buy the headsets on a whole sale price. I'm getting a Logitech one for only $19.99:D

Are there any deals going on with the PS3 right now? Free controllers or 20% off one accessory or anything? I'm decided on getting one, I'm just waiting for any deal to come along.

HW seems quite stable, no problems here.

I did purchase mine with a Visa card that doubles manufacturer warranties though :D

If you want to run Linux now or at some point in the future you may want to go ahead and setup the separate partition for it.

Nothing interesting about Linux so far on the PS3 so no interest there. I have a laptop and 2 PCs at home so what's the point?:D

Btw this update that I'm downloading on it is taking forever, its on 15% and its been about 15 minutes.

Hardware for the PS3 is solid (with some minor/rare issues, not console breaking). You made a good choice with Resistance, it's MP is really fun and can give you many many hours of enjoyment.

Use a usb thumbdrive (free size larger then 101 megs) and download via the net, it's much much faster.

Mine's been running smoothly since I got it in November. As others in this thread have indicated, it seems to be relatively free of problems.

Since you've got Resistance, one of the first things you should do is load up that game and immerse yourself in its awesomeness. :) Sign up for an online account and take a tour of the PlayStation Store. Also, try out some of the other multimedia functionality--take one of your favorite CDs and rip it to the hard drive, or stick some photos or videos on a USB flash drive (or a CF card/SD card/Memory Stick, if you've got the 60 GB model) and see how they look on your TV.

How long and how much is a warranty from Sony? No problems out of mine, but I am just curious.

Wait a sec, I missed this the first time. So there is a one year warranty from Sony that comes with it? Stupid guy at EB, said there was only a 90 day warranty from Sony. Had me worried for no reason:lol

Btw if anyone in Toronto was looking for a Wii or PS3, the EB near me had tons of both. He said they just got a new shipment in, so I would try looking at your local EB games store for either ASAP.

Hardware is great.

First thing you should do after hooking it up is play Resistance and join the clan.

You fool! Now we're all going to miss out on the next months NPD that Sony doesn't sell a single PS3!!! Please tell me you bought it from Wal-Mart ;P

The only hardware issue you may encounter may be while viewing Blu-Ray movies. The screen may freeze momentarily and be unresponsive to any controller input, and then it will resume playing, sometimes having skipped some of the movie.

The knee-jerk reaction to this will be that you have a bad Blu-Ray drive in your PS3 and you need a replacement, when this really isn't the case. This is an issue that's supposed to be fixed with the next firmware revision and it is caused by the network connection. If you disable your PS3's network connection under Network Settings, this problem will go away. This is of course a temporary workaround and this issue will be addressed soon with an update.

Hey the graphics of Resistance actually look good on my SDTV. The game is so fluid and the controls feel so responsive. Glad Sony is bring back the rumble, it feels weird without it. Can't wait to play Resistance in HD, hopefully it will be worth the purchase of a new monitor just so I can play my PS3 games in HD. It sucks you can't copy all the content from memory sticks onto you PS3 hardrive though.

I hear ya. Every now and again I get caught up in GAF hype and buy a game I normally wouldn't have. Better $7.99 than $60 I guess though.

Yes it will be worth every cent. It is harder to see allie/enemies in multiplayer in SD mode.

Congrats on the PS3. The reports on faulty PS3 hardware have been far and few between, so you should be good.
