Nope. Their blog hasn't been updated since the 22nd either. They should be making some kind of announcement soon, maybe even this week. For now, stay far, far away.

Just got this from Goozex and the 1.20 patch is downloading slow as fuck.

(First attempt took like 2 hours and made it to 24% before crashing out)

I am not a shooter fan and usually dislike very realistic shooters and thi is my first SOCOM..
I ENJOY it a lot! maybe due to one bullet kills it adds too much tension and cuts off run and gun. Reminds me hardcore mode in Cod4 (which i used to play all the time).

Also this is one of the rare games where ppl do teamwork! Even if they are not in same clan or whatever i really enjoy when some stranger from my team says "its clear!" or "wait!!!" to me! lol

Ok, i havent ever played a SOCOM, its installing right now (Which is odd since i have the bluray) so... if anyone wants to teach a noobie noob like me on the ways of SOCOM it will be much appreciated.

It has to install to be on par with the loading times of the folks with the PSN version.

As for gameplay, be patient, don't run and gun, work together.

I installed the game and the 1.30 patch... and it gives me network errors >_<
Once it loaded like 50 secs to give me a network error.... ok, i will wait until they fix the servers.
 
Well I just picked up this game and I have yet to ever play a Socom game. I expect a steep learning curve with such a devoted fan base from the PS2 so hopefully I can catch up. Even though I haven't played it before I am a very big fan of tactical shooters and any multiplayer that requires working together and making strategies and such. It's a nice headset as well.

If anyone is looking to play my PSN is FourSerioux.

Just curious... does this game have a big active community like it's PS2 brethren? I'd love to pick it up and I've been considering buying a PS3 solely for this game but I'd like to confirm it's active, people use headsets, and it has the same lobby system as the older games.

People use headsets, its very active, and does use the same lobby system.....

but its missing the true community of the individual servers, like if u know you can find an old clan hanging out in US Central 2, you wll find alot of random people there instead, due to the ranked games and everyone wanting medals/trophies

Man that kinda sucks. I remember many sleepless nights spent in US West 7 in good old Socom 2.

Not as many problems anymore. Theres still problems, but it doesnt break gameplay completely. And hell yes its fun, very fun.

Thats what i miss. I was always on US East 8 since SOCOM 1, and even if your clan wasnt on, you'll find the familiar heads to play with there. And it was basically a meet up spot when everyone got SOCOM 2. Now its all friend list based (PSN, ingame list fucking sucks), and since you cannot create a room and have your stats count for rank, everyone is checking all servers for an 8v8 DEMO Medley that has enough spots for you and your friends.

Just to give you an idea of how tings work nowadays

If you would have started it before, I would have joined, but I think KZ2 is gonna take over any SOCOM time I may have had. :(

The same thing happens every time on GAF. The clans always die a quick death. :\ This time especially sucked because the clan features were so late in getting here.

[edit] BTW- in case you guys didn't know: you can track your stats/clan stats on socom.com now. :O

I finally got my SOCOM copy from amazon.co.uk, Europe ftw !

So tell me Gaf, should I open it or sell it (keeping the awesome headset though) ?
I saw some rather funny videos months ago where some dude (cursing a lot) was playing it and showed how broken the gameplay was, is that still the case ?

This game is awesome and surprised from all the hate it seems to get. Guns are the best sounding ever and all the customization is sweet. Only one life sucks very bad at the start but once I got a handle on the controls it doesn't bother me that much. It looks pretty darn good too, love how the foliage reacts and the 3rd person view.

The only way invites can be sent out is to either have you on my PSN friend list, recent players met list, or if you're playing in the same room as me (or Greg).

Therefor, if you want a GAF clan invite, you need to be online at the same time as either me or Greg in order for us to give out an invite. There's no option to send out invites by typing in random PSN IDs.
 
Just noticed that I can get this very cheap and was wondering if would be a good idea. How many of you are still playing and think you will continue to play?

My copy arrived today and it's nice to see that all of the issues from the beta have been fixed. I'm really enjoying it but so far I'm finding that I'm getting booted from half the games I play in. Thanks Socom community. Way to make me feel welcome. Especially annoying when I'm booted from an Elimination game by my dead teammates. Hey I survived whatever you were stupid enough to get killed by.

That was my first experience with Socom II. I got booted from every game because I was trying to figure the dang thing out. Luckily, Socom 3 came out shortly after so everyone was on the same playing field, map knowledge wise.

When you have a single player campaign to explore the maps, the multiplayer can be a bit easier to ease in.

Does anyone still play this game? Is there a big patch coming soon? I loved the very first SOCOM on PS2, but the sequels never grabbed me. I've been itching for an online shooter to tide me over until Modern Warfare 2 comes out, is this one worth it? Sorry to bump an "old" thread, but this seemed like the best place to get the input of vets of the game.

Socom is one of the most played online games on PSN right now with almost 10k on at all times. THere is also two patches coming. one to add feature and another to add DLC. If you're in to tactical shooters that require teamwork and communication you'll find one of the coolest online communities on Socom.

Ok GAF, it's time for YOU to decide for ME. I'm planning on picking a PS3 Bluetooth Headset this weekend, and I'm still undecided if I should pay $10 more for SOCOM (since some reviews depict a pretty bad game). Should I shell the extra dough? Or should I get a PSN card or something else?

Socom's kinda bad, dude. Not to say it sucks, but it does. Gameplay wise when it clicks it'll click pretty well. But it has overly complex controls (unless they patched this?) like motion control leaning (seriously, what the fuck?) and horrible lag/hit detection.

Half the promised features on the box had to be patched in (and some of them STILL aren't in :lol)

Overall, I'd say avoid. But I'm sure some of the hardcore Socom base is here on GAF and will go "WTF NO DON'T LISTEN TO HIM! BUY IT AND EXPERINCE THE SHITTY YOURSELF!" for you.

I have had the game since launch and it has drasticllay improved, but I am gonna say wait for the almighty mega patch thats due anytime now and wait for reviews on it from there.

But its Socom.

for $10 its not even a question :D. You will have 10,000 players playing it almost at any time. That kind of answers the question of how good the game is better than most people who never tried it or think that controls are hard (wtf).

Decided to pick it up and it's been really fun so far (already met a couple of helpful, experienced players and joined a clan).

Picked this up today, and it's waaaaaaay better than the beta was.

Lag is completely gone, and the hit detection is damn near perfect.

And yes, the first thing I did was turn off the awful motion control, and now all is right in the world. Played for about 4 hours tonight, and had a ton of fun.

Good times, old school SOCOM action ftw.

SOCOM is a LOT better these days. I've been playing since the beta via the GameStop preorder. (I love SOCOM)

It was awful then, and is MUCH better, though still not perfect, now. Still a few issues with the controls, and a few other problems that should be mostly fixed in 1.5 (hmm...broken record much, /6?)

Anyway I do recommend this to gamers who enjoyed SOCOM but don't necessarily want to see a 100% spot-on reproduction of it.

Also, is there a GAF clan? I just saw someone in a pre-game lobby that had GAF before their name, but it was 2v1 so I wound up leaving before it started. (Quick Match is still not perfected, clearly...)

If there is, I'd love an invite...

1.5 patch is finally being released this Tuesday!

We know you guys have been anxiously awaiting further information on Patch 1.50 and today we’re happy to announce that the 1.50 Patch will be deployed on Tuesday morning.

Patch 1.50 includes many new and diverse features including but not limited to: Clan Ladders, Tournaments, Calendar, Follow-A-Friend, and Private Games. Along with these features there are many optimizations, enhancements and fixes. Included below are some of the highlights:

Crashes, Freezes and Hangs Fixed

* Players being booted out of the game to the XMB while loading into gameplay.
* Players freezing on the loading screen going into and returning from gameplay.
* Loss of input issues that occurred when using the pause menu or scoreboard.
* Low frequency freezes when creating a clan.
* Players occasionally getting stuck on the Quick Match screen after selecting an invitation.
* Rare cases where players would become stuck in Spectator mode.


General Gameplay Updates

* Numerous improvements to lag and latency, as well as bandwidth optimizations.
* To eliminate exploits where players were escaping to outside of the playable space, many of the previously found routes are now blocked off. As a further measure, the playable areas are now surrounded by trigger volumes that will kill players attempting to find new exploits.
* Players are no longer able to plant claymores through pillars, walls and other objects.
* Target spotting will now default to OFF in all ranked games.
* Fixed characters occasionally getting stuck when planting flares in Control mode.
* Made the range players could plant the satchel more consistent between levels, in both Breach and Demolition modes.
* Commando reticles now turn green when targeting a VIP in Escort mode.
* Increased the priority of picking up the satchel so it can be picked up more easily when weapons and other objects are piled around it.
* Louder and improved footstep audio for characters that are out of view.
* Limited the angle that climb prompts appear at, character will no longer turn 90 degrees before climbing.
* VIPs no longer appear on the HUD Radar after being killed.
* Added the ability to plant Control flares and Demolition/Breach satchels while prone.
* Improved grenade throws, they now more closely follow the throw arc, added better wall detection to keep players from throwing grenades through walls and other objects.
* Fixed issues where different weapons would appear in characters hands to different players.
* Players can no longer take control of VIPs/Hostages through walls or other objects.
* Improved performance for the late joiner, host and all other players when joining a match in progress.
* The satchel will no longer appear in the incorrect location for players that late join Demolition and Breach matches.
* Fixed cases where the number of rounds won by each team could become out of sync.
* The death camera will stop following the character that killed your player after 5 seconds.
* In spectator mode, the button commands will fade our after 5 seconds.
* When selecting a weapon in-game the player’s custom loadout will not be overwritten, that can only be done in the Front End Armoury.
* Fixed cases where Detonators for Key Moments could become desynced, allowing them to be used twice.
* Multiple fixes for situations where characters could become invisible.
* Drastically cut down the Fade-In time at the start of the round.
* Fixed the jittering reticle when planting C4 and Claymores.
* Improved ability to plant the C4 on Breach walls.
* Resolved issues across all maps where players could become stuck when crouching or going prone in tight spaces.
* Closed an exploit where players could shoot through walls close to windows when using a scope.


User Interface

* Improvements across multiple Front End screens to improve the look and feel for Standard Definition users.
* Fixed cases where scrolling rapidly or backing out quickly from Front End screens could lead to multiple items overlapping.
* Sort the Channels list in a more user friendly way.
* Updated several places in the Records and Statistics where the same gun would appear more than once.
* Increased functionality for customizing controls including adding Hold functions to the Analog sticks.
* Added an option to disable D-pad Lean.
* Created a new Nordisk channel.
* Fixed an issue where the Clan Mottos would sometimes be cut off.
* Added more information to the Game Details screen in the briefing room.


Weapons

* Reduced the accuracy of the FAMAS.
* Improved damage of the Desert Eagle.
* Improved damage done by all Sniper Rifles.


Crossroads

* Improved collision on railings to allow bullets to pass through them easier.
* Removed a dynamic spawn from several modes that had a player respawn in a locked room in several modes.
* Several fixes to curbs around the level so the player can traverse smoothly over them without reload interruptions.
* Updated one of the breach walls on the Overlook so player cannot get past without destroying it.
* Closed several exploit holes that allowed players to gain access to out of bounds areas including: numerous rooftops around the level and the area above the warehouse.


Quarantine

* Players can no longer swim under the platform of the main floor of the dome.
* Players no longer get stuck in the water of the main floor of the dome.
* Improved AI pathfinding with extra focus on the transitions in and out of water, including lowering the water in the dome at the start of the round in Escort and Extraction modes.
* Updated several locations inside the dome where the camera could pass through the ceiling and walls.
* Tweaked the collision on several pipes and beams so players cannot pass through or get trapped.
* Closed several exploit holes that allowed players to gain access to out of bounds areas including: the dome roof, areas past the outer fences and the submarine.


Fallen

* Improved AI pathfinding with special attention given to transitions in and out of the water.
* Aligned a dynamic spawn point with the world to prevent players from spawning halfway into the ground in Escort mode.
* Added more detailed collision to several cliffs to prevent players from clipping through the terrain.
* Closed several exploit holes that allowed players to gain access to out of bounds areas including: the cliffs above each spawn, the roof of the temple and behind fences.


Kasbah

* Aligned Demolition markers to be more visible.
* Resized one case where a Control flare could be thrown over the edge of a balcony.
* Added collision to a fence above Commando spawn that would allow players access to the 32 player area in the 16 player map.
* Closed several exploit holes that allowed players to gain access to out of bounds areas including: across destroyed bridges, outside the walls and on rooftops.


Urban Wasteland

* Aligned markers in Demolition and Breach mode to be exactly at the centre of the target zones.
* Resized two cases where Control flares could be planted behind walls.
* Several fixes to curbs around the level so the player can traverse smoothly over them without reload interruptions.
* Closed several exploits that would allow the player access to out of bounds areas including: hotel rooftops, the sky bridge roof and several buildings around the level.


FrostFire

* Fixed camera issue where players below the Watch Deck could see enemies above when standing on the pipe.
* Closed several exploits that would allow the player access to out of bounds areas including: rooftops, the helicopter and the water.


Desert Glory

* Smoothed the collision on several pieces of rubble on the ground to allow easier traversal of the level.
* Closed several exploits that would allow the player access to out of bounds areas including: the cliffs above and the winding road below.
