'Lower sales of hardware' speaks for itself.
Yeah huge success, lets ignore that sales to consumers were down in Europe all holiday eh ...
Actually funnily enough, I think Japan + Europe + US shows a smaller gap this year than last, would have to check.
Is this the Sony is doomed thread now?
I didnt pay enough attention in business management/economics but is this good? Are Sony starting to recover or on the right path?
EDIT: @Bacon I think you meant SKYfall xD
Sony ended 2012 stronger, posting $495 million (46.4 billion yen) in operating income for the three months to Dec. 31, with sales at Sony Pictures up 30 percent.
TOKYO – Sony returned to the black in the third quarter, with operating income of $495 million (46.4 billion yen), compared to a loss double that size in the same period a year ago.
OUR EDITOR RECOMMENDS
Sales at Sony Pictures climbed just over 30 percent to $2.23 billion (208.9 billion yen), while income from the division jumped to $270 million on the back of a strong theatrical performance by Skyfall, as well as home entertainment revenue from The Amazing Spider-Man and Men in Black 3.
Stop the damage control, it includes at least 1m PS2's, it didn't drop that much and pretty much all info on sales we have says no to the 77m.
Streaming PS4 games via Gaikai wiiu style. A bit clunky with the R2, L2 etc but very possible.
If it worked (big if but playing along for now) it would be a big boost for the Vita's value proposition. At least they would give it a good crack.
Hence streaming PS4 games. Play U4 in bed... That type of stuff. Remote play was a good idea and I doubt Sony has completely given up on it ... it just didn't actually work.
I don't think that's accurate. The game division did poorly, but Sony Pictures did great due to Starfall and a few big rental/disc releases in the quarter.
The Xbox division made more money than Sony. Not Sony Computer Entertainment. Sony.
I hope they announce something great that ties the Vita to the PS4 during their announcement, otherwise they're just sitting back waiting for Vita to completely die.
Yeah. Whoops. As for being on the road to recovery, yes. Games division not so much. Movie studio had a superb third quarter, which carried the company.
Worst idea ever. They should keep that clusterfuck as far away from the PS4 as possible.

You honestly think they're going to let the Vita limp along until the PS4 is released and then with a feature to stream PS4 games to it if it ever happens the sales is just going to jump up? The price of the PS4 is probably going to be $400 and more after buying games and accessories there's little hope that people will drop another $200 for a Vita. I just can't see a spike in Vita sales once the PS4 is released.
If they can somehow get remote play to work on PS4 > Vita (Gaikai perhaps?) then it will be quite cool.
Sony really should just consider stepping out of the handheld market. Hell it would probably be more profitable for them to have studios make 3DS games.

not that hard to do, since IIRC sony hasn't made money in years.
The problem is we don't know. I suspect the PS3 does quite well in Australia for example... But that is all anecdotal.
You can make a decent guess to support either outcome.
Instead of thinking you could read the earnings release we are discussing in this thread.I don't think that's accurate. The game division did poorly, but Sony Pictures did great due to Starfall and a few big rental/disc releases in the quarter.

It's a bad idea, but the alternative is worse. I know all the Sony fans are hyping Kaz, but he's now clusterfucked the PSN fiasco and the Vita. I'm hoping there's a larger plan in place and he's not just sitting back waiting for something magical to happen to get people to buy his handheld. People keep saying price drop, but there was a pretty good amount of price drops during the holidays and it didn't seem to do much to help it. AC and CoD did very little either. They literally don't possess a system seller. Throw one free in every PS4 box. Or better yet, take all of the unsold Vitas, rip off their Dpads, and put those on whatever new PS4 controller they're making. Get something from the Vita.
What would be the point of this? Except dumping money of course. Remote play is a completely uninteresting feature for most people. It only makes things more complicated and ads costs.

Someone correct if my math is wrong here, but taking into consideration the exchange rate sony used (80 yen to the dollar for 4-12 2012 and 81.2 yen to the dollar for the quarter), the big loser continues to be one of Kaz' pillars, mobile:
Mobile Product & Communication (04/2012 - 12/2012) = -¥72.6B (-$907.5M)
Mobile Product & Communication (09/2012 - 12/2012) = -¥21.3B (-$262.32M)
That is worse than last year when, still in the JV, it did -536M Euros
Considering the buzz around the xperia lineup lately, I'm a little surprised.
By comparison, the one that everyone thinks is a huge loser and tracks them down:
Home and Entertainment (04/2012 - 12/2012) = -¥33.8B (-$422.5M)
Home and Entertainment (09/2012 - 12/2012) = -¥8.0B (-$98.5M)
While still bad, that's a huge improvement from the last FY where the tv segment did -$2.803B

Not according to the majority of WiiU owners in that thread saying they use off TV play more than not...

Wow, dude. It really seems to me, a neutral observer, like your sole agenda in this thread is to shit on PS3 sales and make sure that they doooowwwwwwn because it makes you feel better or something.
If it works over the internet, then you can play your PS4 games on the Vita even if you're away from home. Who wouldn't want that?
Unless the Vita integrates closely with the PS4 which to my mind it is almost certain to do.
Not saying it will help at all, but to me this is the reason Sony is yet to drop the price. If anything the poor Vita performance might be pushing the PS4 release forward.

It´s not going to work that way.
Some Sony guy said that Vita price cut was going to wait until this year. We have 2 PS events this month so maybe they say something there. If not, let's say it's announced in Q2 (E3?).I really don't understand how anyone can still believe that Sony has some secret plan to save it.
They couldn't afford to cut the price before the holidays in the West, when it had the best chance of helping; they certainly can't shift first-party development away from consoles with the PS4 launch rapidly approaching (and even then, it's far from guaranteed that Sony's top studios are capable of making a game that could sell well in the current handheld market); and they don't have the necessary leverage over third parties to secure exclusives (and, as far as Western third parties are concerned, see the previous parentheses).
They have yet to respond to Vita's sales with any great urgency, because a response by definition involves solutions (or at least potential solutions) and Sony simply doesn't have any.
That´s probably because the majority of the WiiU owners at this point are fanboys that like off TV play just for the sake of it. General interest in the Gamepad is very low, just look at the sales numbers or the all around hype level of the WiiU. It´s not a well reveived platform at all.
It doesn't make sense to kill it now, just following its natural path Vita will improve. The question is how much depending on how much they push it. And Sony as Kaz said they plan and evalute things for the long term, so I'm pretty sure that they're considering these things.
Or any other handheld with that logic. Vita is way more expensive than the 3ds including memory cards and thats the main issue. I use my vita daily. I have no short in games. The point is, the Vita can´t be safed at all. The only thing it can do is causing even more harm than it alreay did. Every cent spent for something Vita related would be better spent somewhere else. This platform shold´ve never seen the light of the day.
PS3 remote play has that option IIRC. But because of Gaikai, cloud gaming may even be a better option.

I would note that the above quote pretty clearly characterizes smartphone/tablet games as part of the "solution" to the failure of Vita.

I think the main issue is 3DS has Pokemon, Mario, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter etc etc and Vita doesn't. What's a price cut going to do?
I don´t think it would be technically possible to stream PS4 games to the Vita, especially not when you´re using it as a real handheld and leave your house.
