Spotify PS4 is really broken.

Just unlink the account, and put your login in.

I'm pretty sure this is a Spotify issue where the app on a phone is able to see any connected devices. I use it to play music around my house in different rooms so that same feature can be abused in a network situation like a dorm.

Edit: those saying to turn it down with PS button and L1, the Spotify app let's you control volume of the device it's being played to.

So if the random person has selected his PS4 as their output, can they also listen via their phone or computer still? If not what is the point of selecting a random device?

But once it's linked another phone can override the account settings? Doesn't seem so.

Doesn't it require the user to link the Spotify account to the PSN one when you use the Connect feature?

Yes.

After selecting my PS4 on the Spotify App on my phone, I had to link my account to PSN on the PS4 app, so it doesn't seem that easy to do that. You'd have to have access to the PS4 in order to confirm the account link.

I suspect the OP's roommate may have done it. I'd suggest the OP to start investigating him. :)

It's not like whoever played the music is going to do it every time you're on your PS4 and want to use Spotify though. Chances are they either did it once just to mess around and won't do it again, or they have their own PS4 and they'll just connect to that instead. Unless it's your own roommate, you might want to look into that OP haha.

Its NOT login based.

Its network based. They just have to be on the same network.

Yea seems to be a spotify "feature" should be changed to have authentication on the playing device before the controller is able to use it (even just checking account linked to both would solve this).

Yeah that'll be handy when the person controlling it also has volume control.

So it sounds like you have people just messing with you. I'm a senior right now at my university but I currently live off campus. When I lived on campus the first 3 years I could see people apple drop folders and other access points. No one did anything to be funny.

The person on their spotify app has to select your PS4, and if you lowered the volume and they raised it then they are just trying to be a dick to you. After a week of the release I don't think anyone will be dicking around with it since it doesn't benefit you to cancel the music you are playing to go mess up some other guys gaming/listening sessions.

Don't transfer because of this haha, I truly think they were just messing with the app and not trying to mess with you. Nothing to get upset about but this is something worth bringing up so hopefully Sony can add a verification button you can click to allow Spotify to connect rather than just forcing it through.

This might come off as facetious, but am I the only one who found the story in the OP to be kind of funny? I mean, yeah it sucks, but the thought of someone just playing their music on your PS4 with no way to stop it (excluding powering off or disconnecting) is kind of amusing.

But yeah, they need to fix this.

Totally amusing, especially in a dorm setting.

I'd imagine it will pass as a gimmick. Anyway I've only got a month and a half left, no way I'm leaving.

Also I took some steps.

  • Reset my Facebook password and logged out of all devices.
  • Reset my Spotify device password.
  • Deleted and re-installed the app.

Someone in the original Spotify thread said that they were pushing random music to everyone's PS4s in their uni dorms. It seems like you can connect to any PS4 on the network?

So, which is it?

If you DON'T have to link, then Sony/Spotify messed up.
If you DO have to link, OP has a haunted PS4.

So... I just tried logging out of my Spotify account on my iPad. I created a new account. I am NOT able to send music from my iPad to my console (probably because my account isn't linked).

My PS4 doesn't even show up in the connect window. I'm also not able to control Spotify on my PC, because it's my usual account that's logged in there too.

At what point did that happen? All I recall doing yesterday was logging into Spotify on my PS4. Then I started my iPad's Spotify app and it immediately found the PS4 on the network and allowed me to start controlling the PS4 with it. I don't think I had to link anything to make all of that happen.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Interesting. Did you close the Spotify app on the PS4 and reopen and try again with the new account?

Interesting. So it sounds like a roommate prank then?

This is a good time to let people know that (NSFW album art warning) there are porn sounds on Spotify. Let the trolling begin.

Is your iPad Spotify logged into the same Spotify account as your PS4? The problem here is that you're able to control a console logged in with someone else's account. That shouldn't be possible.

Free accounts can't use Connect.

Heh, I remember setting up my ps3 in the dorm back in early '08 and seeing all the open connections to other people's laptops with the media server setting turned on. Nice to know things haven't really changed.

Heh, I remember connecting in 00, 01 or so and there being tons of Napster shares. All the music!

That said, it seems like a clear oversight from Sony or Spotify or both? The PS4 should "pair" with a code liek every other device out there before allowing app control.

If everyone is on the same wifi network, then anybody could see your PS4 from the Spotify app. I don't know how someone could have linked to your account.

I don't know what I would blame except for the internet of things.

except you cant do this with any other device other than the PS4...

Every other device requires authentication.

I've never once authenticated anything when using Spotify Connect to my TVs or speakers I have set up around the house.

Yeah they really messed up. they need to add an option like the Xbox Smartglass app

i.e let anyone on network control/let control only if user(blah) is signed in or only add verify device settings

isn't this how Youtube works?

if you are on the same network, friends can put up videos for each other.

be it PS4, PS3, Smart TV, etc.

My important takeaway from this thread is that you can apparently push music to your PS4 without having to open the Spotify app first. That's gonna save me tens of precious seconds.

Did you buy one of those cheap and highly suspicious Spotify subscriptions from eBay? That may not be what you've done but I was looking at subscriptions on eBay a few days back and they're essentially selling shared accounts.

Again, not saying you have but that would account for what's happening to you.

Spotify connect searches the local network for Spotify clients. The client should serve some authentication and from there you have remote access. THat auth step seems to be missing on the PS4 client or does Spotify connect skip that step completely.

Because you're logged into your account. Im on spotify on my phone at work and I cant simply connect to co workers spotifys because Im logged in as myself.

Spotify is crap imo, at least their CS is.
No phone support. I signed up for the 3 month trial for $.99 before the new year and something happened where another account was made when I signed in through Facebook.
So now I am getting charged for an account I can't even sign into. And CS isn't being that helpful.

It is actually great if you are on a private network. If I am tired of game music I can just start my own music from my phone and it starts on my PS4.

Oh ffs Sony, haha. Masters of Network Security.

I can't believe there's not an option to just grant access on a per-request basis and it's just open to everybody on the same network.

OP, do you have access to a cheap router that you can set up to avoid this?

I love being able to control Spotify on PC and PS4 via my phone.

Sounds more like this is on Spotify, not Sony though since this is how Spotify connect is designed to work

Its not logged into his account though, someone else just used their own spotify, if you had read the OP it even says "their shitty music", and connected to the PS4 on the network, exactly like the poster was talking about.

Sounds like the OP did not link his account first?
So someone else swooped in and started playing music on the open PS4.

1. PS4's Spotify is open and ready to connect to any Spotify device on the network. (you can also manually log in)
2. Use Spotify on phone/tablet on same network and connect to the open PS4's Spotify, it is now linked to your account and PS4 is no longer "open".

OP just needs to sign out on the PS4 of the other guy's account, and log in with his own.

I know what OP said. Im saying this cant be done on any other device other than the PS4. Im at work right now and cannot just start playing my music on co workers spotifys.

I tried playing DoA Last Round to the sound of my music and couldn't, also. It automatically turned the music off, and I couldn't make it play through the "hold PS button" menu. Once I loaded the app back, it showed as if the music never stopped, but there was no sound.
Pretty shitty.

Added to the issues with my library and constant "cannot download" message - although it is wired, everything else works, and the PS3 has no issue whatsoever - I'm pretty pissed at my PS4. It is fucking annoying.

I can't even update Bloodborne. I'm already on my fith try.
