Square-Enix Currently Has No Plans for Mana and SaGa Series [Updated]

The remakes are great, but not making them reach outside of Japan kills off the series. It's a shame as the originals were great and the remakes better. But the series was dead long before those.

Totally agree.
And even then they manage to not even releasing them abroad, we never did get Romancing Saga PS2 in the end because of Unlimited.
Seriously SF2 didn't do to badly so the problem lies with US and how they can't seem to want to make new games.
We got trolled once again by Kawazu :(

I was hoping it would get new life once he left as hes the one whose done all the harm to the series. I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the reason the Mana games kept changing was he didn't want to make the same game over and over again. Which is fair enough, its just when those games keep sucking maybe you should stick to what worked for you.

That said I will say that Children of Mana is a good albeit flawed game, it had potential to be a great game, but just is way too grindy and samey. Every one of the quest you do is the exact same thing, do X amount of floors in a dungeon. If they had of added a little variety in missons, made magic alot more useful then I think the game would of been amazing. It looked great and had the usual standout Mana soundtrack. Oh and smashing enemies around with the hammer was way too much fun.
Without Ishii they can drop the SD or Mana qualifier and make a new franchise already :/

well still waiting for FF versus 13 how long ago did they first show that? SE next new game 2016?

I really hope they working on some new IP if not.................
They did put out some new IPs, but the market largely ignored them. And it will most likely ignore other new IPs they put out, as well.

I remember in the PSone days how the big releases were from Eidos or Squaresoft. Now Square have to rely on Eidos and Enix IPs :(

Remember when you could buy any Squaresoft game, and see four games on the back of the instruction booklet, and every single damn game was a game worth playing? Four games you could buy with confidence that your money was well spent and you would have a great experience?

Such a distant memory :(

RIP Square-Enix I say.

All we are getting now are ports of old games on iOS.

Even that is taking forever. Where is my FFT!!!

To expound on this, here is a list of some new IPs established by Square Enix this generation. I left out some iffy stuff like 0 Day Attack on Earth.

Some new IPs developed or published by Square Enix this generation:
The World Ends with You
Yosumin
Nameless Game
Sigma Harmonics
Infinite Undiscovery
Last Remnant
Blood of Bahamut
Lord of Vermillion
Gyromancer
Chaos Rings
Lord of Arcana
Mindjack
Moon Diver

Lots of these games are of questionable quality, but I do think it's silly to act like they haven't been putting anything besides DQ and FF out there.

Some of their recent games were not exactly stellar either I've been told.

I didn't get the chance to try Sigma Harmonics and Blood of Bahamut but from what I've heard we, sadly, missed nothing.
Their output on consoles is laughable (I mean it's basically FFXIII and the rest was either mismarketed or pretty much horrible) and they seem to slip from time to time on handheld.
The situation is not as dismal as some doom&gloom but it's not rosy either.

Actually seeing your other post....their new IPs this gen are uniformally shit.

Well, I can applaud them for sticking by Chaos Rings and Lord of Vermillion.

I think they need to do that for a lot more of their IPs though if they ever want them to succeed.

other bits from the meeting, I'm not sure if it's new thread worthy.
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/22/wada_shareholder_questions/
•Q: Do you have plans to release titles that were once popular?
A: Wada noted that the new Tomb Raider does not have a number attached to it. This is because Square Enix is looking into reviving a number of titles. They're always investigating how to "reboot" past titles.

•Q: Are there plans to release a new Mana game?
A: Wada said that Square Enix will be doing ports of Mana and Saga titles, but there are no plans at present to release a completely new entries/series.

•Q: Are there plans on making a real life casino like the casino in Dragon Quest (I told you some of the questions were silly!)
A: Square Enix is releasing games like Battle Road in arcades, but there are no plans for an actual casino

.•Q: How much did Square Enix lose due to PSN's downtime? Will you seek compensation from Sony?
A: PSN-related earnings losses were in the hundreds of millions of yen, but specifics are not clear at present. While they expect consultations with Sony, they don't expect something like compensation.

•Q: Front Mission's reviews were terrible
A: Wada replied that he sees all the reviews at Amazon and in magazines. He believes they should have worked harder on the game.

•Q: How will Square Enix use social networks for promotions to reach fans?
A: Square Enix feels that it has at last gotten the hang of producing games for social networks. It hopes to release its IP content on social networks from this year.

From this list I like TWEWY and Chaos Rings..... ><

They should totally make TWEWY 2, it's like the only critically acclaimed new ip (besides Chaos Rings) they have this gen.

It says something when I didn't even see TWEWY in that list...

I wonder if the other revivals he's referring to are Hitman and Thi4f.

To be honest though, I think this news is even more sad.

"We'll just be porting everything around. Why try more new entries?"

Or they should have given it to a competent developer or even better made it a SRPG.

Yosumin is a great game, but it's a puzzle game, so it was never going to be huge in terms of popularity.

Nameless Game was never released outside Japan right? It's gotten fairly good reception I think that they made a second game.

Reading this thread is incredibly depressing.

I hope they clean up their act soon. It's like watching a dog with three broken legs try to walk around.

Not just any dog. This dog used to be a superhero dog that shat out gold. Which makes it extra sad.

What's even worse is that basically they've even given up on updated remakes/ports too seeing how they're releasing the original games ala emulators on all services.

Calling it now FFV/VI 3DS are dead.

FUCK! Anything but that!

I would kill to have a FF5 remake on my 3DS. I would MURDER.

Basically. I guess they were aiming for that million seller mark and decided to change it into another, more popular (shrugs) genre, despite the front mission games not really being million sellers in the first place (although the series as a whole was).

Suzzopher said:
Front Mission could have been great if it were made like Valkyria Chronicles battles.

I guess I can stand by this argument. A modified VC would be a natural evolution of the series imo.

In it's defence, this isn't a main series game we're talking about. It's more of a spin-off, like FM Alternative was.

Excluding ports/remakes, TWEWY is actually Square Enix Japan's highest rated game this generation.

Metacritic:
TWEWY: 88
DQ9: 87
Rocket Slime: 83
Crisis Core: 83
FFXIII: 83
Dissidia: 79
Dissidia 2: 78
The 3rd Birthday: 70
Last Remnant: 66
FFXIV: 49

I sorted the lists by highest rating and couldn't find anything higher except the Chrono Trigger port.

"•Q: Front Mission's reviews were terrible

I love the bluntness of the question. It's almost like just saying "Front Mission sucks, you suck."

I laugh a little every time I see this score.

Never thought I'd see a mainline FF get this kind of reception.

The fall of Square Enix is kinda foggy for me but it seems like they started to screw up around the time they starting doing that damn FFVII Revival nonsense. I was just like wtf are they doing?!? I rented Dirge of Ceberus, and that was the first SE game I remember outright hating.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Hopes:

1. A Mana port (Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3) on XBLA/PSN.
2. Xenogears reboot.

What Square will give us:

1. A Mana port on the Android.
2. Xenogears reboot developed by Ninja Theory and it becomes a pure action mecha game.

That whole affair was so anti-climactic too with no FFVII remake. That's what everyone wanted and they didn't give it to us.

Mixed emotions here. They experimented and trashed mana for so many years part of me feels a sigh on relief they stopped. On other hand part of me will always dream of a 2D sprite crazy Mana with a strong foudation based on what made the snes multiplayer ones so much fun. 2D Romancing Saga on Vita would have been kick ass too.

My opinion. I still believe they can create a seemingly new franchise with the mana series. After years of um...down time they could do whatever with it.

Such a sad state they're in. If you're not gonna make more Mana games, at least give me this thing.

http://www.rpgamer.com/games/ff/ffamobile/reviews/ffamobile-strev.html

As for Front Mission. Everyone knew that game was gonna be awful the moment they announced it. How did they ever think that was a good idea. Loved FM3, which sadly was the only Front Mission Europe ever got I think.

It seems SE acknowledge that their games are getting shittier each gen but still do nothing about it.

Wada step the fuck down !

Secret of Mana was a fluke in the first place.

Blaming the entire company for the Mana series' decline is wrong. Ishii was at the helm of ALL the Mana games, and the recent batch were experiments that he wanted, and they all failed. The original Mana on Game boy was a Zelda clone in the first place, and SoM was building from that. When Ishii tried new engines and concepts, it turns out he does NOT have good ideas of his own.

Mana will come back with a new director eventually now that Ishii left.
