Starhawk |OT| Not Quite Warhawk, Yet Not Quite Like Anything Else

Maybe you guys want to give the non-beta a spin before you judge it... seeing as it was unfinished, and receiving feedback from players.

They should release a demo, because I don't think some of us would like to pay $60 to test drive a new version of something we didn't enjoy.

This feels a lot like the Twisted Metal 3 release. It is very underwhelming and under the radar. I have every intention of getting this someday. It will take a deal though, just like it did with Twisted Metal 3 (30$, about 10$ too much IMO).

The SP seems to be a sorts of introduction for multiplayer, they haven't really shown anything that suggest a truly fleshed out campaign.

I wish the beta had been better, I had severe issues with the basic game mechanics. Movement and shooting just felt weird.

Did you play Warhawk much? That part doesn't sound good at all. I had no problems with the movement and shooting in WH and am going to be sorely disappointed if they messed up the basics when they already had it tweaked in their previous game.

Expect an eye opening experience upon boot up.

To me, there were some very fundamental problems which simple tweaking will not fix. It may have been unfinished, but not that much changes between beta and final.

we're opposite then as I HATED the gunplay in Warhawk aside from the RocketLawnchair.

I find it odd that I was the most vocal opponent of the game in the beta thread yet somehow became the game's champion. The beta was flawed. I blame the overabundance of options available and the fact that it was being played by people who probably had no idea what to do and would never give it the time if it weren't a free trial.

But thankfully, the beta isn't the whole package. I'm just excited I'll be playing a space combat, rts, tower defense, space western, third person shooter hybrid next week.

I find it sad that many here have a hard time believing in such a project and not seeing the value yet fund kickstarters based on blind faith. Where's the support for change and difference? Uniqueness and originality?

Don't forget the split-screen online support, which was the ultimate cherry-on-top for Warhawk too.

Nicely done OT. Reading through it has raised my awareness for this title a bunch. I currently do not have anything to play on my triple so maybe this game will bring it out of hibernation!

rts elements are a dagger for me. i just don't have any interest in that genre or gameplay.

Well, despite the presence of a SP campaign, Starhawk really is a MP game. And the RTS aspect can be completely ignored in MP. Just run/fly around and shoot things. Let other people do the building while you do the battling.

Oh I didn't. That's one of my main draws. Every Wednesday night, my dad, brother and a buddy and me have online game night and this game's 4-player co-op is going to be the go-to game for us. Randomized enemy waves? Give me.

Thanks. I wanted to be a little more unorthodox and leave out the typical PR fluff.

if SP is good, I will get it, otherwise...
Judging by the previews linked in the OP, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

rts elements are a dagger for me. i just don't have any interest in that genre or gameplay.
Eh, this is game isn't that intensive in that category. It's more about your own personal preferences when it comes to structure placements as opposed to being extremely strategic.

This sounds really interesting. I've never played Warhawk, so I'm not quite sure what to expect.

Just got done with school for the summer, so I'll have time to kill and try different things.

If the single player turns out to be a normal fleshed out campaign (hopefully lengthy too but hey it's a shooter) then I'll get it when it drops in price. I paid almost 0 attention to this game because I thought it was MP only but the stuff I saw today in the god of war show looked great, and it seemed like SP footage.

How long is the SP campaign projected to be?
I've heard COD length. Haven't played them but I imagine not that long but decent?

The way I look at it is I can play this same campaign 5 different times and and each attempt will be different with regards to how I choose to play. Do I feel like messing with the ai, walling them in before dropping down inside their cage with a mech? Do I take a more defensive role? Do I stick to the ground with guns or drive around on one of the vehicles?

So the only way to get those extra levels is by preordering at gamestop? WTF with that exclusive nonsense?

Starhawk press campaign takes flight
Retail, specialist press and the PlayStation Access team have been recruited to push Sony’s latest PS3 shooter Starhawk.

The main focus of the campaign so far has been pre-orders, with various special bundle packs available at specific retailers. The platform holder has booked in-store marketing and ads in lifestyle and specialist magazines. The company has also run online media across games sites.

As Starhawk nears its May 11th launch date, press ads will begin appearing in specialist publications including Official PlayStation Magazine and PSM. The firm has also produced interactive takeovers for some of the biggest UK games websites, including IGN and Eurogamer.

Sony will also make use of PlayStation Access, targeting fans of Starhawk’s predecessor – Warhawk.
“We expect Starhawk to be extremely popular with the core end of the shooter market. After all it is the successor to one of the first great online multiplayer shooters, Warhawk, which is still one of the top five most downloaded titles from PSN,” said UK product manager Kerri West.

From the blog:

You guys were really great beta testers, so as a “thank you” for your participation we’re giving you two exclusive items.

The first is The Hand of the Founder. It’s an exclusive character accessory for anyone who played in the BETA. It’s a gold, glowing, atom-looking thing that is bonded to your right hand. It’s intended to be a way to show off to your friends and everyone else online that you were one of Starhawk’s founders. That you had a hand in its creation!

The second item is the Warhawk Paint Set. It includes two exclusive vehicle paint schemes that you can use to customize any of your vehicles in Starhawk. The Warhawk Paint Set is available to any Starhawk Beta tester who was *ALSO* a Warhawk player. You get the olive-drab military look of Warhawk’s Eucadians as well as the stealthy, black and gunmetal look of the Chernovans.

Both The Hand of the Founder and the Warhawk Paint Set are Starhawk Beta exclusives and are intended to be very special “thank you” items that will never be re-released or sold. And we’ll be making a follow-up post on the specifics of how we’ll be distributing these Beta gifts.

Is there going to be an actual demo? I wanted to play the beta, but every time I tried to download the massive patches it would get interrupted and messed up. Would love to give it a run.

Yeah, this game isn't meshing with me either. If you asked me what were the top three best experiences of this gen, playing Warhawk would definitely be in there. It was such an incredible experience...man, what an amazing, excellent game that was. The best online game this gen had to offer, period.

Starhawk didn't grab me in the beta. It seemed way too complex for it's own good. I tried playing it by ignoring the building aspect but it just wasn't clicking for me. I can't even really explain why. I felt the same way with some of the sequels to my favorite games like Infamous 2 and Dead Rising 2. Maybe it was that once-in-a-gen spark that inhibited my feelings towards the originals.

I just don't know. I feel like buying it just to support Lightbox, but man, seeing as this is the sequel to friggin' WARHAWK I feel like I should be way more pumped.

I see I'm not alone.

I see I'm not alone.
If an actual beta made free to the public is something that you feel represents the final product and scares you off, that makes me sad. I DID NOT like the beta. But I know I was up against the general public without any clue what to do in a testing environment full of changes and tweaks. I see the potential. I've given lots of ideas I'd like to see the game adopt.

However, this game is more than just an idea that may or may not work in an online environment. This has a fully functioning SP campaign that takes the elements from the MP and makes them available against the AI. No more worrying about the public ruining the gameplay.

Even better, the co-op. This will be my most played game this year by far. With the openness of the SP, and the randomized awesomeness of co-op for my Wednesday night game nights.... Yeah, GOTY material for me. You guys can choose the big names with the fancy scripts. I'll stick with revolutionary gameplay.

Oh, I'm willing to wait and see. I'll play a final Demo, should one release. But no, I did not have any experiences while playing the beta they released that compelled me to say, "yes, I want to pay $50-$60 for this."

Nope, I did not. If you like it as is, by all means buy and enjoy! But I didn't feel the magic. As such, I will wait for reviews, a second demo or commentary before agreeing to buy it. I don't buy games because people who enjoyed something I did not strongly suggest I do. I'd like to support the game, but I won't if I can't expect anything more than what I've already experienced in terms of enjoyment of the game mechanics.

Hoping for a pre-built shit mode. I just want to hop in and play it like Warhawk. I'm fine with no xp, just give me the option!

Going to be a big Starhawk 8 vs 8 Tourney on UrgentFury.com.

On May 14th, 2012, we will kick-off the first round of “Urgent Fury Dust”. Dust is a series of six tournament events designed to prepare your clan for our Signature TacMap Tournament that will be revealed later this summer. Urgent Fury Dust will focus on 8-vs-8 matches that introduce your clan to our level of competitive but friendly sportsmanship; in fact, our motto is “Win with Honor, Lose with Dignity”. Who wants to play with cyber bullies, cheaters, or trash talkers? Certainly not us! We monitor clans to make sure they’re playing with respect for all players (even the people on their own team)

The winner of each deployment will gain one of 24 slots into the upcoming TacMap Tournament. Prizes will be announced soon. Sony Computer Entertainment LLC is not responsible for this event

I admire Lightbox for trying something new and not merely updating the graphics and adding more content, but I'd be lying if I didn't tell you Starhawk just aint working for me. After seeing how this turned out I don't really blame other devs for playing it safe with sequels. That being said, what do you guys think the odds are of a Warhawk 2? More or less than .01%?

I really hate when people say this. What we played was a beta build, not an alpha or pre-alpha build. All that's going to be changed from here on out are the minor types of tweaks we saw from November to March. What others and I disliked about from the beta is something much more core to the game that is too late to change.

I'm willing to play the game again in a demo form to see if something they tweaked magically changes how I feel about the core gameplay, but not pay $60 and hope it's completely different.

I get you guys, don't worry. I'm just trying to elevate hype levels =P.

I'm not holding a gun to anyone's head. I'm just asking people to use their imagination and picture the mechanics working in a single player or co-op environment or when the community adapts and figures the game out.

People jump all over kickstarters with nothing but blind faith. Well this is what I have faith in and I've actually had a taste of what to expect. Space/flight combat; spawning bases, weapons, and vehicles from the sky; and open-ended mission/gameplay structure... *Drool
