11 hours into The Last Remnant. Impressions so far:

- You guys weren't joking: the main character is the most stereotypical JRPG protagonist possible. Cringeworthy writing.

- The voice acting... actually isn't bad. But my standards are very low for video game voice acting. Is it on the same level as The Witcher 3? No, of course not, but that's more a function of TW3's vastly superior writing.

- Sidequests are... ehh. Most haven't been too bad, but I just did one where I had to run around a way-too-large and featureless desert area and activate some pillars or some shit. What a boring quest. It's a little late and I was literally nodding off while running across that bland ass area.

- I've been desperately avoiding battles as much as possible because of your warnings. What a stupid leveling design. Why would you punish the player for wanting to enjoy your combat system? Speaking of that...

- As I said earlier I'm typically against turned-based combat, but this game does it pretty well. It's clearly very deep and there's a lot I still don't understand (yes I've browsed the Wikia but I'm trying not to depend too much on it). It's fun enough to keep me playing despite my other gripes about the game.

- I'm pretty sure I've fucked up on a few characters; I originally wanted David and Torgal to be mystic users but now I'm having them using weapon arts, and I heard you're supposed to only focus on one or the other. Currently I have Rush, Pagus, and Loki as my mystic union, Emma, Torgal, and David as weapon arts union #1, and Baulson, Blocter, and some random hire as weapon arts union #2.

11 hours? Whatever you think you know about the game's mechanics, I can guarantee you that you've only just started discovering things.

Also, it's virtually impossible not to "fuck up" a few character's classes unless you play with a guide and know exactly how the progressing works. Ultimately you can grind passed any difficulty, so you'll never be hopeless. Just grind on the right things, at the right time, in the right way, or you'll gimp yourself.

Roguelike is one my least favourite genre alongside sports game (that's not Manager of course), but man Renowned Explorers is just so damn fun. Last roguelike game that managed to hook me like this was FTL.

I wish the writing is better though. Would be nice to have Sunless Sea writing with Renowned Explorers gameplay.

I have it but it didn't seem like it had enough character events for me so I just bought The Curious Expedition which RPS chose as their favorite of last year.

Right on! If I manage to finish P5 or Zelda by its release, I may just dive in at launch.

Although I'm bracing for the Canadian price...

You better finish P5.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
Did they really develop a new engine for Persona 5 or did they just Bethesda-up the Gamebryo engine from Catherine? I refuse to scrub through a video just to check for when a character kicks a trash can and it breaks the time/space, light/sound, and blood/brain barrier.

More To Explore DLC added some character event mechanic, think I'll buy that later.

Not quite a fan of how The Curious Expedition look, but wishlisted.

Y'all should check out Expeditions: Conquistador during its free weekend. It's not the best RPG in terms of mechanics, but it has some great ambitions for advancing the genre. It's like nothing else out there.

I'm really hoping Viking surpasses it in every way. I firmly believe that Logic Artists has the ideas and talent to make a classic.
I wouldn't worry; both Conquistador and Clandestine use Valve's recommended pricing.

Ok, this is good news.

Thanks, Jase.
You better finish P5.

Will do. It's kinda hard to put down, so this shouldn't be a problem.

I have a Steam key for the Mages of Mystralia Beta that I won't use.
If you redeem it, please read the following NDA:

By installing the Beta, you agree to this NDA
Beta Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and Content-Creation moratory

There will be an NDA during the closed beta period of the game, but this period shouldn't last too long depending on beta feedback, polish time and debugging.

We anticipate our full release to arrive by the end of Q2 2017. Until this upcoming official release, we ask that all Beta participants refrain from streaming and/or publishing any multimedia content associated with Mages of Mystralia.

In summary - By redeeming your Beta Key, you accept NOT to publicly talk about the game and its features, or to share any type of Mages of Mystralia related media anywhere, until the NDA lifts.

This moratorium is there for two main reasons. First, we want to avoid spoiling the game and story to future (release) players. The second reason is due to the game's current state - although we're already VERY proud of the current build, some bugs and imbalances may still be present. As such, we want to prevent community-created contents from showcasing an incomplete version of the game.

That being said, we would love to hear from content creators who are backing the project so that we can coordinate with them to make a big push once our game arrives at full release! At which time we will be dropping the NDA and giving monetization permission for music in the game to be featured on video contents relating to Mages of Mystralia. :)

If you are a content creator (on platforms such as Twitch and/or YouTube), don't hesitate to send us a private message on Kickstarter and we'll make sure to keep you in the loop for the upcoming NDA lift. :D

Cheers. :) I'd backed the game at the beta tier but pulled out when I had to buy another GPU.

The depth of field effect in Everything when you become something microscopic is so disorienting. Seems really neat tho.

Seen a let's play for it. It's definitely an interesting concept, sort of a scavenger hunt of all the things you can be, coupled with some Carl Sagan-esque dialogue, but I don't think I'm up to a collectathon of that scale.

Finished Yooka-Laylee 100%.

I can't really compare it to the games it's trying to emulate, because I became PC-only before any of them came out on consoles, but I thought it was a good game that is able to stand on its own.
It does however have some glaring faults, most noticeably the goddamn voices and the camera (although I thought it behaved better in later stages or I grew accustomed to it). The hit detection can also sometimes feel off, especially with collectibles, and the flying and snow plow controls are horrible.

All things considered, I think it's a ~7/10 game. Dunno how horrible the performance and controls were pre-patch but they must have been excruciatingly bad to justify the under 5/10 scores we saw pre-release.

I'm looking forward to play it, those flaws don't seem too major to me

Yeah, the camera insisting that it knows best can be a giant pain. I hope an option for completely free control (so it doesn't snap back into place) is patched in at some point, although I'll probably be done with the game by then.

Nier Automata has become an embodiment of despair. I feel like the lesson learned from this game is that everything is terrible forever, and nothing you do matters.

It was hard for me as well. In any case, don't give up here!

Sense of scale in Everything is unbelievable, this might be the most completely unexpected surprise I've had in gaming.
It's a bummer nobody is talking about it in the OT. The game having a staggered release makes me hesitant to hop on Twitter and join in that conversation.

Do you play Katamari Damacy to 100% the inventory list? I understand it might frustrate some people who have a particular play style it doesn't appear to be a goal or a rewarding part of the experience.

I'm making the Outlast 2 OT right now, either to go up today or tomorrow.

Anyone here on SteamGAF maybe have any thread title suggestions for the OT?
