The fantasy of winning the lottery

Oh man!! That is one of my all time favorites too. Eddie is one of those singers and lyricists that just connect right to my soul.

Here is the full song for society for those who want to check it out:

Into the Wild was great in a large part because of the amazing soundtrack that he provided for that film.

I got 5 numbers once on the U.K. national lottery. It was about 1700 quid. One more number and it would have been 6.5 million :(

My other number was one off the bonus ball too. Which would have been I think nearly 200k.

It's no fantasy, it's a nightmare. Imagine all your friends, family & colleagues suddenly looking at you as a "rich dude" who can help them whenever & however they want. And then if you don't, you're viewed as a bastard? (especially considering your money would be seen as undeserved luck.

Thanks, but no thanks.

that's why if you win, you (silently)leave the state/country asap. They can't hound you if they don't know you had moved.

I don't gamble often because it just seems like throwing money away, but if my job ever does a lottery pool you better believe I get involved. If everyone at my job except me won millions of dollars, I would literally shoot myself...

BANGS BANGS Yeah, that would be a literal nightmare.

I've also seen the person who buys all the tickets end up buying additional tickets for themselves...and the first time the guy did it he didn't clarify which tickets he bought for himself and which were the "pooled" tickets. I swear to god if any of those won he'd claim he bought it for himself and fuck over everyone.

After that first time I straight up demanded that he specifically take a picture of all the tickets that are for the pool and not mix them with his own tickets ahead of the drawing.

...and one time I may or may not have created an excel spreadsheet with all of our entries that autocalculated if we won any amount of money and highlighted the tickets with winnings for easier cashing in. That spreadsheet took like over an hour to make because I couldn't find a reliable "image to text" program that could read the ticket numbers consistently.

So the lottery maniac lives inside me somewhere...

Why do you play? Why don't you play?

What would you do if you won?
I used to get those scratch cards when I was a kid. I even won around 100 bucks once, which is a lot of money if you're a kid (I immediately invested it in toys). As soon as I learned to calculate probabilities in high school maths, I stopped playing immediately. Haven't bought a single lottery ticket since.

Some in my family play, like an aunt of mine who plays every week since she was little and occasionally goes across the border to play in a casino. She once won around 10k, which was immediately going into repairs for her house. I would assume that if she would have saved the money for every lottery ticket she bought, she would have had much more than those 10k. But yeah, it's very difficult to change someone's mind who doesn't believe you can use maths to make sense of your choices and decisions.

Every time we do a pool, the buyer scans all the tickets and sends them to us. No such fuckery around here lmfao...

Really just the relief from student loans is enticing enough to fantasize about winning the lottery. Other than that I'd buy A GT-R and move somewhere. Not much I really want to buy honestly.

Id like to think if I won, id be able to make sure all of my immediate family are set financially for life. Id still have to work or do volunteer work or i'd crack up doing nothing

I don't know, if I won one of those 100 million powerball lotteries or something. I'd have no problem sharing with friends and family. But I'd make it clear, it's a one time gift. I could really hook up everyone I know and still have 80-90 million leftover. Give all my close relatives a million, more distant ones a few hundred grand, give my friends a good chunk, but if they ever hit me up again for money, I'd hang up and cut off contact.

I didn't even realize the Mega Millions was over $500 million which is what I'm assuming prompted this thread.

Isn’t it widely known that the lottery is really just a stealth tax mainly on the poor, helping to fund the lifestyle of athletes etc?

Personally I don’t spend any money on the lottery or scratch cards.

Purely coincidence...but not that I know this little factoid... what do I do?!

I generally only hear about jackpots when they're literally making headline news so that you can't ignore it.

You know... I still have this dream of winning the lottery, and fully fund Shenmue series till its end. (and hopefully get some money back in sales and other stuff).
And that, was before this whole kickstarter thing! LOL...

500M is almost too much.

I would try to donate most of that back to some causes I care about, but I would want to hire someone to run the foundation, so I knew exactly where the money was going, and would want someone to track the impact/results.

It often bothers me that some people make more than they ever need to use, but we still have problems like hunger and homelessness. But who am I to tell someone what to do with their earnings?
