The three major console makers, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, and the largest publishers that produce games for the systems, have paired up to back “The Game Awards,” with the first event set to take place Dec. 5, from the Axis Theater in Las Vegas.

The show, which will be streamed live across all gaming systems and devices, is a direct challenge to Spike’s “VGX,” formerly “The Video Game Awards,” which was essentially a television promotional platform for upcoming releases during the peak holiday shopping season.

Sounds like a replacement VGAs

On December 5, videogame creators, press, and fans around the world will come together to celebrate all things videogames with The Game Awards 2014. Built to honor every aspect of the world’s most dynamic form of entertainment, The Game Awards 2014 will highlight the cultural significance of the $100B a year gaming industry with awards, world premieres, musical performances, and appearances by game developers, eSports players and online content creators. The Game Awards 2014 is a new show created specifically to acknowledge the place of videogames at the center of modern entertainment and culture.

“The Game Awards 2014 will celebrate our collective love of games and the passion we all hold in our hearts for this incredible entertainment medium,” said Geoff Keighley, Producer, The Game Awards 2014. “Gaming has never been stronger, and this year we will recognize the fastest-selling launch year in history for new game consoles, the rise of eSports and mobile gaming around the globe, and preview the games that will make 2015 the biggest year yet.”

Airing live from the state-of-the-art AXIS Theater in front the industry and the public, The Game Awards 2014 will be viewable around the world across a record number of gaming devices, platforms, media partners and services. More details on ways to watch the show will be released in the coming weeks at www.thegameawards.com Public tickets for the awards will be available for sale via TicketMaster on Tuesday, November 11.

The Game Awards 2014 is produced by Geoff Keighley, with the guidance of an advisory board that includes Reggie Fils-Aime (President and COO, Nintendo of America), Yves Guillemot (Co-Founder and CEO, Ubisoft), Hideo Kojima (Executive Contents Director, Kojima Productions), Shawn Layden (CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America), Peter Moore (COO, Electronic Arts), Rockstar Games, Phil Spencer (Head of Xbox, Microsoft), Martin Tremblay (President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment) and Valve.

“The Game Awards is a special event to honor the achievements in gaming, our talented developers and devoted fans. We look forward to celebrating the power of games this December,” said Yves Guillemot, Co-founder and CEO, Ubisoft.

“PlayStation looks forward to seeing our fans and celebrating with them both at The Game Awards and The PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas this December,” said Shawn Layden, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “For those who can’t join us in person, we will be livestreaming the weekend on PlayStation Network.”

“Electronic Arts has long championed the way gaming brings together players with the talented teams behind the world’s greatest video games, and this event will be an exciting new opportunity to do just that,” said Peter Moore, COO, Electronic Arts. “We look forward to supporting The Game Awards alongside our friends in the industry.”

“We have long been believers in the potential for videogames to inspire, challenge and entertain, and we look forward to standing with the industry to celebrate the medium at The Game Awards this year," said Jennifer Kolbe, VP of Publishing, Rockstar Games.

“Xbox is proud to be a part of The Game Awards and to celebrate the creative and innovative work that happens across the gaming industry all year long,” said Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, Microsoft. “I am pleased Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners around the world will be able to watch the entire program through Xbox Live.”

“It’s been an amazing year in games and we’re excited to celebrate the industry’s achievements at The Game Awards alongside friends, colleagues and fans around the world,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

“Valve is excited to share The Game Awards with over 100 million users on Steam around the world,” said Gabe Newell, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Valve. Alongside the free livestream, Steam will offer a special limited time Steam Sale as part of The Game Awards 2014 broadcast. More details will be announced closer to the event.

Hmmm... sounds interesting. Might be worth watching if we can get confirmation Keighley and any of the actors/writers involved with the VGX/A won't be in there.

Well, at least he's not the host (apparently)

In fact, Geoff Keighley, who produced that show is also behind the new “Game Awards.”

Confirmation denied.

As long as we get more dope game reveals, I'm willing to not care about games companies funding their own award ceremonies. One shouldn't be expecting ethical standards when it comes to these things.

Huh this seems strange.

What about Geoff Keighley's twitter about Dec. 5th? So is this it. Would be stupid to have VGX the same day.

EDIT: Oh so it really is. Looking forward.
Fallout Reveal Trailer will be great

If they really do have the backing of the console manufacturers, there's a decent chance there may be way better reveals than at the VGX.

Maybe not "We're on national television" level, but some nice stuff.

Although I wish they'd just drop the awards and focus on the reveals and stuff.

Hmm. Backing from the major players makes this sound legit, but we'll see just what that entails. Especially with this only airing online

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Hope this is good.
It can't be worse than last year's VGX, that's for sure.

Pretty sure that is the thing Keighley was teasing earlier. It's on the same date.

Ok, so it's just VGA/X renamed.

Not watching then.

Thanks for the "confirmation" guys, ha ha.

Oh boy another shitty awards show, I can't wait.

I legitimately do love watching these for the comedy aspect though, of how amazingly terrible they end up being. VGX last year was fantastic.

Interested. until it becomes over produced trash that tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator... so, next Tuesday then.

An awards show backed by the companies which make the games? Yep sure sounds like a fair set up to me

With Viacom getting rid of Gametrailers and without Geoff's boot, I don't think they are gonna even bother with VGA/X.

An awards show backed by the companies which make the games? Yep sure sounds like a fair set up to me

Yeah that bothers me too

In fact, Geoff Keighley, who produced that show is also behind the new “Game Awards.”

The host of “GameTrailers TV,” and former regular on gaming network G4, Keighley wants the event to acknowledge the place of videogames at the center of modern entertainment and culture — and make it available to a far larger audience.

Instead of airing on just one network, it will be distributed via a digital pool that includes Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Nintendo and Valve’s Steam, which has over 100 million worldwide users on its own.

Sounds like VGX/A is dead.

ever since i can remember, Spike's VGA show has been an abomanation. I just don't like the Spike channel in general. Its a stereotypical channel that ironically feeds on stereotypes.

Looking forward to it.

Fallout 4 will be there - believe!

From Producer Geoff Keighley:

Today I'm proud to announce The Game Awards 2014, a new show that will be coming in just one month's time. After spending over two decades working in games media, this year I'm creating a new independent celebration for our industry.

Starting out on a new path is never easy, but I'm deeply humbled to have the entire game industry rally behind this new celebration. In the coming days and weeks there will be much more to tell you about what's planned for December 5 at the AXIS Theater in Las Vegas, including information on the awards, the world premieres and much more.

More than ever our industry -- the fans, the developers and the media -- need to unite and show the world the power of games. I look forward to celebrating with you on December 5, whether you join us in person in Las Vegas or online.

Thanks,
Geoff — @geoffkeighley

Hey, at least it's much better than the "VGX," whatever that acronym even means.

At least it's original.

'Hey, we won a VGX award for The Last of Us'
'Oh, cool'.

'Hey, we won a Game Award for Uncharted 4'
'What award?'
'You know, The Game Award for Game Of The Year?'
'What GOTY Award?'
'From The Game Awards!'
'Which?'
'Sigh'

That part about "musical performances" doesn't make me too confident that this will be any better than the VGAs.

But hey, not related to Viacom or Spike... I'm all for that.

Honestly those VGAs/VGX shows brought out the most hilarious on Twitter. I'm all for whatever they have to do as long as there are great reveals, which is probably what anybody watching really cares about.
