My favourite part is that it (kind of) restores New York's skyline:
Yeah, I think it does a great job of doing that. It's true that there's sort of a hole in the middle, but I think that's appropriate considering what happened at the site. Moreover, the hole isn't that bad, as it aligns with the street grid, creating an infinite vista down the hole. I think it works.
Why not make it the same as the other which has a great, modern and simple design already? Is there a rational behind it?
I can't tell if this consistent refrain in this thread is a failure to read the OP, or a lack of understanding of architecture...
