The Real Sept NPD Thread: complete data, HW, past 3 mos, past four generations

I haven't done this since June so I put together three months this time.
NPD of July, Aug, Sept of previous generations at this same respective time.
2016 = 2009 = 2004 = 1999 = 1994
Ton of major releases here, including the DC launch.
At this time in past generations we had Halo 3, Tales of Symphonia, Fable, Star Ocean 3, Pikmin 2, Pokémon Snap, Mario Golf 64, FFVIII, Super SFII, Mortal Kombat 2, Breath of Fire, Illusion of Gaia, etc.

Quarterly North American shipment data where available.

Side by side so you can just glide your eyes to the right of the same year.
July, August, September (scroll over):

GBC HW in July '99 (forgot to add) was 450,000. The GBC data comes from "reverse engineering" a graph from a PDF research paper that used NPD HH data. No, I do not have HH SW data pre-GBA.

For comparison sake:
Sept 2016:
XBO 333,000
PS4 285,000
3DS 172,000
WiiU 36,000

Thanks for taking the time to compile all of this data! I've been thinking back on what the NPD threads used to be like, and it's a shame to see them reduced to basically nothing here. I guess it was the lack of concrete data that killed them?

It looks like cumulative hardware sales (homeconsole and handheld) have taken a massive dive since last generation? Could the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One end up selling less than their predecessors?

Edit: Do we have even ballpark estimates for how much PS4, Xbox One, 3DS and Vita sold this past September?

Ah yes, historical data. Thanks Square, always appreciate the software lists!

Thanks for the info.

Funny how Super SF2 was topping months and Capcom still produced too much.
You're welcome. Posts like this keep me going :)

Sales are down because of the Wii and DS phenomenon, that gen will probably never be topped.

Sept 2016 HW:
XBO 333,000
PS4 285,000
WiiU 36,000
3DS 172,000

Man, look at those sales from September of this year compared to September 2009! :O I don't even know what to say about that.

Can you imagine showing someone in September 2009 the total hardware sales for September 2016? I would have thought the videogame industry had collapsed. Hardware manufacturers would probably have a heart attack!

Where does the traditional market of home consoles and handhelds go from here? Growth is needed to sustain the industry. If they can't find it, I don't see how they can survive?
