TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XXVI

So for whatever reason, even the Simpsons Wikia has given up on this episode. I'll try my best to use whatever I can scrounge up. Apologies for the various qualities and sizes.

latest

I have mixed feelings on John K. One the one hand, Ren and Stimpy is an absolute classic and should be watched by every cartoon fan. On the other hand, both Ripping Friends and Adult Party Cartoons exist. It's fine for what it is, I suppose. If you want to see it, be my guest.

WANTED: DEAD THEN ALIVE
latest

Oh, Sideshow Bob. It was inevitable that you'd show up in one of these sooner or later.

185

Some may find the fact that he only now has just thought of straight up shooting Bart odd, but I think it fits. Hear me out: You have this 10 year old that fucked your life up something fierce. At first, your attempts at revenge are simple enough: Get into the family, threaten him from afar and cause him to move, rise to poltical power to mess up the lives of the adults related to him. But then you kind of get messed up in the head due to him foiling every carefully made plot you construct. With each newer and stranger plot your sanity grows lesser and lesser. Threaten to nuke the city if TV isn't removed, fake your own death to cause him to grieve more, swap your face with another guy's and move in next door. By now, your grip on reality is so loose ("24 years trying to kill a 10-year old boy") that sane ideas seem bizarre and mad.

latest

It's this episode that really shows the folly of Bob. We've only had glimpses into his pre-Bart/Krusty life, but in them he shows similar traits to his current persona. He was a lover of the finer things in life: Arts, philosophy, wine. It's just that his life took a series of detours and after all this time, it's hard to move on. A smarter era of the program would use this as a meta commentary on the audience watching it after all this time. However... the modern writing staff doesn't use the opportunity, most likely due to the fact that no one is listening any more. TV, even animated TV, has become (a touch) more smarter and daring due to streaming services and the lessened constraints. Bojack Horseman wouldn't be seen on Fox nor NBC, but Netflix? They welcome it with the embrace of a lover.

WBWk0Q6.png

But alas, he has to return with a altered form to educate a gaggle of slack-jawed millennials. A tragic figure, matched only by the best works of the Russian masters.

(It's an alright segment. Nothing great, but nothing horrid either.)

HOMERZILLA
latest

So how would King Kong VS Godzilla work in the THOHverse? It's just Homer VS himself. (Should've been Bartzilla like in Bart's Nightmare)

185

Reading Life In Hell, you can see that Groening was a bit of a kaiju fan in his early years. Sadly enough, this feels like a lackluster mock at anything regarding the original. The jokes are the standard bits about dubbing, honor, and other Japanese stereotypes. Not that funny once you've heard them 100,000 times.

latest

But then it turns into a slam on the 1998 Edrick flick, complete with standard jokes about product placement and idiot scientists. I dunno, it feels like they had a 1 sentence premise and then they tried to stretch it out to fit 7 minutes.

latest

It's hard to make a giant monster flick dull, and harder to make a parody dull. But they did it. It's not technically bad, but it's just as bland as those 'Zilla Nilla wafers they threw off the boat.

TELEPATHS OF GLORY
latest

So when do you think the THOH's will get around to doing a Stranger Things parody? I say THOH XXIX.

185

This segment feels immediately forgettable. It's odd that it does, considering it's a unique enough topic, but I feel the lack of really good jokes weighs it down heavily. (That and the Deus Ex Maggiena)

yRYSHBH.png

I'm only giving the spotlight to this to point out an oddity: this is different than what's in the promo shot. (Seen here ) So how far in advance are the promo shots made? With the new promo clips made for the show and how quickly they reference certain events (Pokemon Go comes to mind), they must have some sort of quickened back and forth with whatever Korean studio they use this week.

yJ7Pedp.png

"Just because it looks like season 4, doesn't make it season 4."

Kang and Kodos are the only memorable part of this segment.

Unless the commercials came before Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, that might be inaccurate.
At least one or two of them aired prior to Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.
The Butterfinger campaign featuring Bart kicked off in 1989 between the end of the shorts run on the Ullman show and the series premiere in December.

It's... bittersweet getting to the last THOH on my list. These reviews have given me a new love for the show, as well as a renewed passion in reviewing. But I suppose all good things must come to an end.

oQSc0uc.png

They make a joke about beating Gunsmoke during the credits, but I think they should be more concerened about beating the Japanese. Sazae-San has 2500 sets of 3 6 minute segments, while the closest in premier date, Anpanman has 1330 30 minute episodes. The next big goals would have to be Ninja Hatori-Kun at 696 and Shima Shima Tora no Shimajiro (Aka The series where that old ass viral video of an anime tiger learning how to be potty trained comes from)

What I'm saying is that I won't be happy until the series becomes the longest running Animated TV show of all time. (Then we can worry about the Meet the Presses and the Bozos.

There's also a bonus gimmicky couch gag viewable in VR. It's meh.

DRY HARD
latest

The problem with THOH's is that there are certain segments that everybody's waiting for you to parody. This is tricky due to the fact that there's some notable franchises that haven't gotten their time in the sun. (The Thing, Friday The 13th, Alien and Halloween spring immediately to mind.)

xTcpHRA.png

As for the content at hand, I have no comments, due to not knowing much about the source material at hand. One of my goals in the future is to be more up and knowledgable about whatever new YA novel gets turned into a movie. (So if they do Maze Runner or whatever during THOH XXX, I'll be prepared.

46bKpzC.png

They seem to run out of steam pretty quickly as it almost immediately becomes Fury Road.

URvtNN2.png

I ain't even mad. If you're going to go for a double shot, why not go for a actually good movie as your second pick?

pGkK4s5.png

All in all, it's average. I'd prefer more parody of the later subject than of the former, but that's just me.

BFF R.I.P
VQk9xWg.png

Drop Dead Fred is the perfect type of niche thing that I'd wish they do more of. For me, the perfect modern mix would be a parody of a highly well known horror/scifi flick (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Grudge/Ju-on), a cult series/film (Wrong Turn, Tremors) and something Horror/Scifi that isn't a film. (Resident Evil, Ready Player One). Something for everyone, yet still retaining the familiar Simpsons style.

zdS7o1d.png

So what Springfield families that we don't know of are left? Janey's? Wendel's? That green/blue haired girl with pointed glasses that shows up in background shots some times?

Q94vbsL.png

Like a lot of these segments, the idea is fine, but the execution stumbles. I feel like I'm repeating myself at this point.

wZ4UutS.png

Let's all pour one out for the lost imaginary friends. Fosters' can't take all of them you know. At least he was reunited in his final hours, and not dropped at the bottom of a chasm. (Who's your friend that likes to play? Bing Bong! B-b-bing b-b-b-b-boooooonnn- *Starts crying uncontrollably.*)

MOEFINGER
ck04zOZ.png

So here we go... the last segment of the last THOH on my list. (Until next year's, which has been confirmed, FWIW.) How does it hold up?

W2UqDSX.png

It's so-so. The show has done better spy parodies even when it was just with McBane. Doing it now feels like going down a well trodden road, even though it may be somewhat new to you.

It's been almost 30 years. Why in the FUCK don't we have an episode about Sam (Computer) and Larry (Butler)? Surely they can spare a marriage crisis plot or two. We know more about Eddie than these two combined.

Y85rTnq.png

It feels like this was made just for the hyper-violence. It has all the same problems i've talked at length about that were in other segments. There's only so many ways to say the same thing, which is why I'm relieved to be finished these things.

J9tRxw1.png

But I guess that's why the show has stayed on for so long. It's run out of things to say, but there's always a new audience willing to hear them. More and more merch for kids gets made, and more and more gifs from these later seasons get used as reaction shots. It gets a new audience by being friendly enough in it's demeanor and design, but by being juuuuusttt adult enough that the kids feel cool watching them. While for adults, it's TV comfort food. No matter how shit your life is at that moment, you can tune into Fox on Sundays, have a pint at Moe's and hear about what new crazy adventure Homer has gotten into this week.

Well, there's that and Fox's inability to deny any possible profit that could from the brand, but that sounds less profound.

And then we come full circle.

WHO WANTS STATS?

Now bear in mind, I rate these like a school teacher would. Just because something is a 6 it doesn't mean it's bad, just average. Likewise, a 10 doesn't mean there's not room to improve, but that you performed spectacularly. I probably should've mentioned this when I started, but I'll do that if I return to this next year.

WHO WANTS STATS?
I enjoy stats.

Favorite THOH by total number: It's a tie! 3 and 5. With a score of 28/30 each.
5 is easily my favorite and the one episode that invariably shows up on many all-time best Simpsons episode lists. 4 gets my runner-up vote. 3 sort of falls flat for me as I'm not a big fan of King Homer and the back-half of the Clown Without Pity segment.

Psycho w/Skinner and Agnes: 10/10
Muppet Wizard of Oz: 10/10
One where furniture gets smart and takes over the world or something: 10/10
I appreciate this Halloween of Horror reference.

Figured I'd share this bit of Bongo Comics collection artwork here as it's Street Fighter-inspired and made me chuckle...

Let's not forget that President Simpson will come to save us.
Temporary refund adjustments can solve anything.

Incidentally, I don't understand the article's logic that America can't just uproot everything and leave like Springfield did. Canada is right next door and has more land to go around.

SIMPSON'S XMAS (A.K.A Simpson's Christmas)

Ok, real talk? Tracy Ullman is kind of pathetic. For ages she's refused to let Matt and Company put the vast majority of the original shorts on home media. I can kind of see where she's coming from, mind you. I mean, without OFF, the show wouldn't even be a footnote, and even with OFF, it's only remembered that her show birthed them. She knows this, (Even back then, what with the family sharing billing in the 3rd season's opening credits with the rest of the cast) but to this date, has refused to let her show be seen legally on VHS, DVD, BluRay or streaming. She essentially is damning her work to be lost forever out of jealousy. It's why online uploads of the shorts had to be sourced from Comedy Central reruns (with a few from compilation VHS's put out in the early days of the show). Mind you, with how Youtube is, it's all too easy now to get the footage. So I can see why she now would wonder why she should bother. But I would've loved to own all the shorts back in the day, if only for curiosity's sake, and I'm sure many would too.

Vr1LJ4V.png

As for the episode itself? The above image is my reaction. It's serviceable for the time and the length, but unexciting when looked at today. Hell, I almost don't feel like giving it a grade, due to how light it is. But it still is animated well, and feels like the "realest" Christmas special they'll ever do. It's not Fruitcake, but it isn't homemade Peanut Butter Squares either. The short is sugar cookies. Bland, but alright.

5/10

Make your own opinion if this short should stay lost by watching it here.

Glad to see you've kicked off the show's Christmas retrospective, Toad.T.

For me, the biggest novelty of the Christmas-themed Ullman short is that it gives us a taste of the family celebrating the holidays one full year BEFORE Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.

I'm also amused at how Homer calls out the wrong names when he's pointing to Maggie and Lisa after catching them opening their gifts early at the tree.

Shame about the length but, hey it's a short. If you stick to my Christmas road map, you'll find that Marge's Christmas message from 2004 is quite a bit longer than this was.

Incidentally, the secret best part about the Ullman shorts is the amount of attention Maggie got. She felt like a veritable key part of the family instead of an afterthought. Think Stewie in Family Guy... except, of course, minus the dialogue.

Live... from the graveyard section of Neo Gaming Age Forums...

IT'S TOAD.T'S SIMPSONS KRISTMAS KAPER KOUNTDOWN

87837.jpg

...I'll work on the title.

So yeah, after Halloween went over well, I'd thought I'd try Christmas. (And by extension, Hannukah, Kwanza, Tet and Ramadan, but I don't think there will be much of those.) Unlike all those other holidays, Simpsons and Christmas go hand in hand because of what I'm about to review today. There's been figures, cards, and even faces of slavery made about the subject. There's even been 2 specialty DVD's about the holiday. TAKE THAT, YON KIPPUR.

So there's little confusion over what my standards are, here's the scoring sheet:

10/10: Majestic
9/10: Terrific
8/10: Great
7/10: Above Average
6/10: Average
5/!0: Bellow Average, but still fine.
4/10: Needs a little work
3/10: Major Flaws detected
2/10: Very little to salvage, start again from scratch.
1/10: Trash.
0/10: Proof of the lack of a higher power.

I don't think there's much further business to attend to, but of note is that I'll be reviewing each act, as well as a cumulative score. 4 act episodes get combined with the longer act preceding them, just to be consistent across the eras.

SIMPSONS ROASTING ON A OPEN FIRE (aka Simpsons Christmas Special)
7817.jpg

So this is where it all started: An episode written by a one-time writer that only aired first because AKOM fucked up the animation on the intended premier (Some Enchanted Evening) I rib because I love.

17894.jpg

This sign has the honor of being the first thing I laughed at in this special.

106566.gif

Really, the first episode is best to be looked at admist the time it was made. There's not a metric ton of laugh-out-loud jokes as we'll see in future seasons, but when viewed amongst the other hokey shows at the time, it's pretty great. Lots of stuff that wouldn't really fly back then, such as a seemingly naked 8 year old juggling fire. (They say it's a body suit in the audio commentary, but Fox must have been sleeping at the wheel to not have made a stink)

403754.gif

This feels like the most "Slice of Life" the show has ever been. It honestly feels like a different show than both the classic and zombie eras. It's a nice change of pace, though.

488472.gif

So do most tattoo places take the money after you get the ink? Because even though the receptionist clearly doesn't give two shits about a clients' age, he probably would care about not getting paid.

ACT 1: 7/10

636887.jpg

I give the show credit, you're conditioned to hate Flanders in this episode, despite him doing nothing wrong. That's hard to do for a character like him. Suprisingly, he doesn't seem to have any religious signage this time. I wonder what was the point where the writers decided to make him a Jesus nut?

727895.jpg

It's the pacing that sells this bit. While I have said in the past that fast paced jokes are what the show's bread and butter were, this is still well delivered by Dan. As is the followup line by unnamed teacher.

856529.jpg

I kind of wish that Millhouse's sass stayed after this episode. Guy needs a little bit of an edge. Mind you, he's more funny during the golden era, but it still would have led to some good plots.

Also, lets take a moment to remember Lewis, Bart's second best friend that has the power to swap races at a moment's notice.
865388.gif

boy i sure hope somebody got fired for that blunder

990546.jpg

Even in the beginning they were self aware.

ACT 2: 7/10

1092681.jpg

With it being Christmas, the sentiment is pilled on quite thick. The early seasons are more dramatic than a lot of the later ones. It's not as if there's no drama or heart in the later seasons (Duffless comes to mind), it's just worn more on their sleeves early on.

1121961.jpg
1130352.jpg
1138327.jpg

With this whole exchange, Lisa finally became something other than prankster #2 like in the Ullmann shorts. I love it.

1200873.jpg

I also like how they keep trying to psyche you out by making you think that everything is gonna be OK, with opportunity after opportunity. But in the end, none of Homer's plans come to fruition. We need more specials like this: Ones that show that even during the Holidays, life kinda sucks sometimes.

1261200.jpg

And while this last minute miracle outweighs the previous message, it still is a good episode by modern standards, it's just given more love because it started it all.

ACT 3: 8/10

TOTAL: 7.5/10

Yeah, when it is not related to the family, they often do change the status quo. Like Barney still doesn't drink, deaths in the retirement home, Apu's kids, ...

Oh cool, Barney stopped drinking since when? Also what's special about Apu's kids?

Barney quit drinking season 11; Days of Wine and D'oh'ses. Well, the time that it stuck, unlike the astronaut training and the New York episode. Apu's kids have aged from non-existent to older than Maggie. Actually, Apu's storyline from beginning has time movement: meets Manjula, gets married, has kids, cheats on her, ... His nephew even grew up to a 20-something.

MARGE BE NOT PROUD

121837.jpg

Oh boy... this episode. Not content with setting the bar firmly at Principal and the Pauper as the first bad episode, folks have been coming back to this episode as of late to pick apart the afterschool special-like narrative amidst the jokes. Where do I fall?

Well read on and see, ya dingus!

for your health

37920.jpg

I think that the episode falls into two camps of viewers: Ones that value jokes over story, and vice versa. For the former camp, there's a lot to love. Every single aspect of A Krusty Kinda Christmas makes me laugh quite a bit, as does Homer reminiscing about the electronic football game.

165548.jpg

The tender moments do land as well. These first ones do at least.

250900.jpg

But then small things make it start to fall apart. There's no other video stores in Springfield? Not even a chain one that they give a clever pun to like "Lackluster" or something? This is supposed to be the 90's, right? Also, Milhouse really gives no reason for not letting Bart play Mortal Kombat BoneStorm other than not wanting to share it. They are still friends, right? Wouldn't you want to play a fighting game with your buds? If you can't, just say you only have one controller. Bart getting thrown out is funny enough, but it just felt like the main reasoning for stealing the game is shaky at best.

363379.jpg

Hear a modern day take on the line by the current Sonic VA here.

And it feels bad to pick apart the episode, due to it being basically the only time the classic era really looks at video games. There's been cameos and sub plots and the like, but I feel that this whole era of the industry really needs a good spoofing. The needless wars, the hyper-violence, the attitude, the flood of mascots. It's a good start to a spoof, but that's all it is: a start. But I guess it's not the main focus, and with how the series's games were in those days, they should be wary of their glass house and all.

ACT 1: 6/10 The plot points said above bring the score down.

475390.jpg

Don Brodka is such a great one-timer. I worked too long in retail and know quite a bit of these types. Tough because of the position of power they've been given. The marine corps tattoo is just icing on the cake.

594843.jpg

Ahh nog. Nobody knows what the hell you are, but you're delicious all the same.

699881.jpg

An underrated Homer line that shows the amount of stupidity I like in him. Temporary brain farts on a simple man, not a 24/7 drooling idiot.

833131.jpg

Why did you have to be a one-timer Don? WHY?

ACT 2: 7/10

895694.jpg

Kudos to Hollyweird for not digging up this Horses' corpse to beat it up some more. The whole Homer bit adds levity to the situation.

I think the message hits home harder if you have kids, or a strained relationship with your mother. I do admit that they do try really hard to make you feel for Bart and Marge's relationship, but it just feels like they're doing a straight-laced aesopic trope and not trying to do their own take with the plot. It isn't if tender scenes cant be done, I mean I already talked about some in the golden age with the previous review, it just feels basic. Like if you put this plot in a later season or in a generic kids show, it wouldn't really draw much attention. But since it's in a series of classics, it sticks out more.

Still a better movie than Piranha 3DD.

Why hasn't some dedicated fan tried to make a Bonestorm or LC's Putting Challenge flash game?

It's not bad by any means, just like your parents wouldn't be necessarily mad if you stole a game because Luigi whispered sweet nothings into your ear. We're both just... disappointed.

MIRACLE ON EVERGREEN TERRACE

Time for one I'd nearly forgotten. I actually thought Skinner's Sense of Snow was before this one, but turns out there's still a bunch remaining. Oh well.

64897.gif

And here we see the elusive Jerkass Homer in his natural habitat. Ooh, it looks like he's come out of hibernation early this year, what a treat!

232731.jpg

The show really knew how to capture how kids really acted back in those days. Or at least, how a kid like Bart would act. Praying to Santa is right up his alley.

349298.gif

I do think there's a place for cartoony antics in the show, but they have to add to the chaos of a situation, and not be the start of a serious stretch of plot.

So Bart ruins another holiday. Look forward to the exciting "Bart ruins Leif Errickson day" plot in season 43!

Me, seeing those folks who got access to those Switch early access events.

The delivery sells it for me. Even a shit line can make you laugh if delivered well enough.

I feel that this is the perfect gif to describe the family dynamics.

1033498.jpg

Can't put my finger on why, but I just don't feel emotionally attached to this plot. Not just because of the whole Bart ruining a holiday plot, but with the whole town loving than hating the family plot. It looses something when they go "THIS IS THE WORST THING. WE ARE THROUGH TALKING" and then next week they shrug it off.

ACT 2: 6/10

Just a funny bit. Not all the clips I show have to have some deeper meaning to them.

1174973.gif

It is actually Trebek doing the voice, which at least makes the scene funny, even if it is a touch out of the blue.

1212727.jpg

It feels like the plot fizzled out around the 2nd act and was just trying to make it to the end. It's really just a meh episode. No wonder I forgot all about it.

GRIFT OF THE MAGI

A bizarre, but fun little episode from the beginning of the post-classic era. How does it hold up? Better than I thought it would, actually.

94360.jpg

He seemed like the type of guy that would be able to take a joke like this. I still do miss him. :(

171160.jpg

I talked about this during one of the Halloween reviews, but it's hard to get a clear reading of this show's feelings about the LGBTQIA (but you know they only look at the first two letters on this show) community. I guess that's the trouble of having multiple writers tackle the characters over three decades. It's more consistent now, but back then, it was a crap shoot.

288760.jpg

I guess my problem with the episode so far is that plot points get introduced and dropped almost instantaneously. Oh, we're in a heat wave? Now we aren't. Oh, Bart needs a wheelchair? Now he doesn't. Oh, the school is closed forever? Now it isn't. It feels more rapid-fire than usual.

317760.jpg

It's not that it's unfunny, it's just all over the place. Which can be good sometimes, but not this time, I'm afraid.

An easily adaptable meme for your consideration. Use it on GAF threads, Facebook Walls, Bar Mizvahs, Bat Mitzvahs!

So due to me living in the land of the grammar rodeo, I never got Spanish TV, and be extension, these bits. Was it really like this?

Alright, I'm stealing this line for everyday use. It's such a stupid line, but it caught me off guard.

A genuinely creepy reveal. I get shades of films like Short Circuit and Best Friend (Wes Craven's Robot flick) from this scene.

Every commercial ever made in one gif.

I love Gary Coleman in this episode. It sounds like it would've been a blast to work with him.

1014360.gif

There's quite a few lines in this act that made me laugh quite a bit, so it'd be hard to list them all. The 3rd act carries this episode and makes up for the disjointed mess of a 1st act. It's a shame the whole episode couldn't be of this quality.

1096760.jpg

It's also one of the few times that i'm not entirely put off by Jerkass Homer. It's a Kwazy Kwanzaa Miracle!

SKINNER'S SENSE OF SNOW

I don't know why, but I love this episode. Judging by some comments here, it seems to be placed in high regard by others as well.

Cirque du puree Solei is still a thing, right? I've wanted to go to one of their shows, but by the time I was old enough to realize that something like it could be entertaining, they got the heck out of dodge.

361570.gif

Chalk this up as another joke I didn't get until way later. I guess since I never did this, I didn't understand the entendre?

409534.gif

I know the kid's pain all too well. Our class had to watch some similar Christmas short from around this time as a "treat". Was boring as all fuck, and I haven't been able to find it since. It was about people in fursuits going to a soundstage dressed up like the north pole and talking with Santa about something, being overly excited about every aspect of his life. I hardly even remember those details.

...I kinda want one of those, if only just for the hipster-like novelty of it all.

Fanart of this has to exist, right?

Not sure if clever writing due to Homer's stupidity or lazy writing pointing out a flaw then not caring about it.

774482.gif

We don't see these two again, so... R.I.P puppers.

859150.jpg

Even I got this entendre when I first watched it, though. And if a sheltered little canucklefuck can get the joke, how did it slip by the censors? Are they the same censors that allowed the "Great things come in bears" poster for the Yogi Bear movie?

ACT 2: 8/10

932765.gif

This is a fine example of a montage: Short, sweet and full of quick gags. They rarely do montages at all anymore, but if they did them like this, I wouldn't complain.

1135676.jpg

I wouldn't mind it if Ned had bits of tricksterish dialogue like this. (Even though it wasn't intended as such). It'd give him more character as opposed to just being the combined reincarnation of all the Church Lady SNL skits.

Behold the gif with a million and one scenarios! Especially perfect for FGC threads.

Chalmers is funniest when he's not joined at the hip with Skinner. He hasn't been recently, but there was a time in which he was inseparable.

Anyway, does anyone have a link to the UK christmas message the show did? Might as well do that as an intermission.
Here you go... once again, it's longer than the first Ullman short.

Also, something more worthwhile than the above - Jims delves into one of the show's greatest mysteries in his latest video... The Simpsons Timeline (The Past).

My solution to the temporal conflict Jims raises is the following...
- Marge and Homer always did go to high school in the 1970s.
- There is an incident of some kind - most likely Frink, Burns or Bender-triggered - that occurs immediately after their prom night that creates a temporal bubble around Springfield that results in the floating timeline we've seen documented throughout the almost 30 years the Simpsons have been on the air in one form or fashion.
- The past course corrects in service of the floating timeline around Springfield - but does not affect the world outside of Springfield. When people leave for a time they eventually start aging at a normal rate which explains why Ling, Apu's octuplets and nephew, Mike Scioscia, assorted celebrities and presidents all age because they're not permanent Springfield residents.
- As for why Homer has aged a few years, perhaps that has to do with his trip to outer space. Or an as-yet-unexplained event (if you want to loop Marge in with that idea - and pretend the entire family didn't venture off to Rigel VII in Season 26).
- The future episodes course correct as well. As clearly documented with Lisa's Wedding now taking place in a future that now pre-dates the Simpsons present. When the show ends (presumably in Season 30), Lisa's original wedding date will fall before her actual date of birth.
- The only viable finale to the series would be to confront the SImpsons family and residents of Springfield with the reality of the show's many temporal paradoxes and to dislodge Springfield from its floating timeline stasis. Perhaps giving them the choice to "age" or to remain in the blissful ignorance of a course-correcting floating timeline that renders them immortal. Hell, you have to know Burns would be all about preserving the status quo at all costs.
