I completely forgot about the zombie cowboys bit, which is strange as I remember the other two quite clearly...
As for Marvin Munroe - when did he (supposedly) die? I've been rewatching the first 9 seasons now and just remember him going from a fairly regular cameo to having a hospital named after him in the first 4 seasons or so. Then having him randomly reappear 15 or so seasons later...

The 138 th episode claims he died and there is the memorial hospital in who shot Mr burns. He was retired after season 6 because the voice was hard to do.

According to Wiki, this was the 1st episode of Season 15, so it feels weird that they started the season this late. They'd make this joke multiple times later on as well. Fox clearly didn't give a fuck by now.

The door gag has been done to death, but it's perfectly servicable with the Benny Hill theme. (Better then when they used it later on, in any case.)
An alright take on what Moe later became.
Personally, I love dark humor. But only if written well. It's often used as just a crutch to get people's attention, not realizing that TV shock humor isn't that shocking in the age of TubGirl and friends. Like, I remember Seth McFarlane's Direct to DVD thing (Calvacade or some shit) was advertised as "Too Shocking For The Internet."

FRINKENSTEIN
I'm sorry, I never really liked Frink. The main crux of his character is an impression of a comedian that is in and of himself a joke. Putting the real thing next to him, while meta, shows that there's not much to him, other than being a mad scientist. And not even a good one like Dr. Colossus!
They do try to give him some depth this time around, but it feels kind of flat, TBH.It almost works, but at the same time, it feels rushed.
Good lines aside, It feels like they tried to be both a Frankenstein parody and a reunion story, but stumbled in both regards.
Jerry Lewis does a great job in this episode though. It feels like all the pieces are there, but it's just still missing something. Something that would turn the episode from OK to Great.
STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GOOF OFF.
A memorable segment for whatever reason. I actually got into the show around this time (Full story next time), so maybe that's why I've put more stock into it?

The time crimes are funny enough in a slapstick-y way, but there's not much in terms of quotable lines.
Barring this one, which tickles my absrdity bone.

TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XV
Story time: I got into the series around here. Before hand, I was raised in a more strict household that wouldn't let me watch this stuff. (I could only watch the intro couch gags and credits) Season 16 is where I was allowed to jump in, so I do have vague memories of the THOH's from here on out. So if I say something to the effect of the show not being as good anymore, bear in mind, I'm comparing it to the years in which many people have left, not to the beloved golden age.
THE NED ZONE
I want to say this was based off of that cult HBO show, Dead Like Me? I remember it being popular around this time.
Moleman's misery gets used too often in the later seasons. I feel that gag or 1-note characters (Disco Stu, Cat Lady (Does she have a name?) Rich Texan (Does he?)) are best when used sparingly. It makes their appearances mean more than just slapping them wherever you feel like.
"Before I was bored of his antics and merchandise, now I wish he was dead." -Every Springfielder ever.
The denial of a joke or plot point you know that's coming can be oddly satisfiying, if you ask me. You play with the audiences expectations until the breaking point, adding tension for the viewer due to them expecting the inevitable.
Due to the way the THOH's focus on traditional scare fare, we don't often see God. But even here, he's portrayed as awe-inspiring. Just putting this aside for that Dexter parody.
FOUR BEHEADINGS AND A FUNERAL
I should note that around this time they started making promo pieces for these THOH's in the style of movie posters. However, since they aren't part of the episode proper, I won't be talking about them. (Nor will I be discussing the THOH comics (Good-Majestic) or the GBC game (An affront to everything decent in the world.))
There's been a line of thought that the show predicts things before they happen in our lives. Mostly conspiracy stuff (The New York episode having an ad with the Twin Towers forming 9/11, Trump Presidency), but sometimes they can be prophetic as well. I don't subscribe to that newsletter, due to the fact that the show has been on for so long, that you could find and misconstrue whatever scene to whatever belief you have. There's just that much content.
He then later on went on to be part of a Vaudeville act with the singing bar rag.
If you find that you can't do satire anymore, why not do absurdist humor? Doesn't get you as many quality laughs as satire, but gives a stable, constant supply of grins and/or smirks.
IN THE BELLY OF THE BOSS
BEHOLD! The only THOH title to be made with WordArt!
Unlike the other recent movie parodies done before hand, this one feels like it was made with genuine love (and not dripping cynicism) for the subject matter. It's a refreshing change of pace, while still feeling Haloween like.
So yeah, he's old and weak. That's the whole reason this mess started. But it feels like that's the only joke they can think of for him anymore. A far cry from creating a cybernetic salaryman or from being El Dracul.
It's also peppered in with jokes like this that need no knowledge of the material at hand. That's a sign of a great parody. Be it done in the past, present or otherwise.
However, since the plot has been done quite a few ways, it does lose a teensy bit of impact. Nothing major, but it just feels like they're late to the party.
And while it is a bit of a change, the ending gives me a bit of Deja Vu for THOH II.
Ned Zone: 6/10

Yep, Ned Zone is the only section I liked from that THOH, it has quite a few memorable laughs and I love the way it ends. Then again, I also like the book/TV show this segment is based on so maybe that influenced my opinion. The other two sections were just so forgettable for me.

What a timely reference! I'm sure that's why that Toad.T guy delayed this review, so that said line would be hi-larious in retrospect. Yeah, that's it. Absolutely not because of him being a lazy twat or anything of the sort, no sir re bob.
BARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
A title that brings to mind the most divisive of Speilberg's works? Not a lot of confidence already, TBH.
The term "Jerkass Homer" has essentially become a go-to phrase for how his character has changed, (And it does show here, what with him being hyped to kill off David with an illogical statement, ) but Hibbert's kind of being a dick as well.
I was almost going to mention this with Frinkenstein, but in that segment, the musical interlude was less then 10 seconds. Here however, half a minute (Which in what's supposed to be a 7 minute vignette is a fair amount of time) is spent hammering in a point we've already established: The people in Bart's life love David more than him. I feel the time could've been spent making more jokes that rely on dialogue rather than visual gags set to a tangentially related piece of music.
This is a great line though, even still. (But I have this sinking suspicion that a similar line to this was done before hand, but I can't place where.)
Maybe it's because I was spoiled on Futurama, but these misfit robots don't feel particularly unique or memorable. They just seem to be a deus ex machina.
And then we get this non-sequitur. Did they just not have enough plot to fill in the runtime?
SURVIVAL OF THE FATTEST
Lets take aim at this next segment!
i have to do 81 of these title intros. they can't all be winners, folks.
A part of the reason why I delay these is because I kind of don't want to deal with the really bad ones. While they are still a bit away (And still probably have funny lines like the one above,) they're more of a chore to go through. Mostly because I do want to give each of them their fair shake, even if they're not up to snuff, and not just immediately bash the segments.
But when I all I have to say about something is that I get a tinge of chortles from it, like with this image, I feel that it's just damning it with faint praise. I don't want to coddle a segment, but I also don't want to be Comic Book Guy. It's hard to find a balance.
I wonder which was the lowest point of his career: This segment, or the Digibowls? (I can't be the only one who remembers that, right?)
"Hmm, where's Lenny and Carl?"
"Don't you push them! They've got to work that out for themselves."
I'VE GROWN A COSTUME ON YOUR FACE
Or: An excuse to have multiple copyright infringing characters on the screen at one time.
Apparently, one of the lost episodes of the "Golden Age" was going to be about racism. Honestly, I'm kind of shocked that they didn't get around to it anyway. Of course, now it'd be filled with a gaggle of half-baked jabs, but an episode like that with the classic writers would've taken the matter seriously while still stopping briefly for levity,
*Does that thing where you gulp nervously and tug your collar*
This one line is better paced and funnier than the entire Banksy-made couch gag that did this. (Also, I can't believe I just typed Banksy-made couch gag. What's even reality anymore?)
It's also a bit of a rushed ending, made even tighter by this PSA. The idea for the episode was fun, but way too underdeveloped.
Bartificial: 4/10 (3/10 without that one line)
Fattest game: 5/10
Costume: 5/10

So friends, I have just come back from viewing this on my local Fox affiliate, and BOY do I have a scathing review for you. Gone are the halcyon days of Our Favourite Family and instead, they've been replaced with these LUDICROUS fakes. It feels like they've stopped trying to seem alive anymore. Like they're some sort of... Zombie Simpsons.
(Pardon the screencaps, the Limewirs rips weren't in the best quality)
I mean, LOOK AT THIS! Tales from the *bleep*ing Cript? It's 2006 for christssakes! Who even remembers that show? Can't we all just move on from nostalgia like this? Then Moe bitches and moans about how he's not dead yet. Personally, I'm in his shoes.
Our first segment is MARRIED TO THE BLOB
So it first starts out with Marge and Homer makking at each other like they're some kind of married couple or something, when a meteor drops in. Homer is of course a dumb a** and eats the passenger.
Then, TOTALLY UNPROVOKED, THEY MAKE AN ARBY'S SLAM! Are we to believe that Krusty Burger and it's affiliated restaurants would even ALLOW such a competitor into their midst? It's like the writers don't even care about the rich, majestic tapestry that is the show's lore! Come tomorrow, I'm posting posters at the Arby's I work at to detract the people of this world from the show.
Homie then starts eating people. Ugh, this plot SUUUUUCKKKSSSS. Not only has there been multiple occurrences beforehand of him stating that he will NEVER eat people, but I can just tell that I'm not going to see the end of commissions based off of this episode. (Find out prices, details and more at www.oooheroticcartsandfanfics.livejournal.com) What follows is a bunch of unfunny jabs at Germans, Americans, and most heinous of all: THE FACTS OF LIFE FANBASE!
WHAT DID WE EVER DO TO DESERVE THIS? WE ARE A PROUD, NOBLE FANBASE THAT DIDN'T DESERVE TO BE TREATED THIS WAY! WE DIDN'T EVEN GET A GOOD FAREWELL, JUST A 5 SECOND BIT SET TO SOME ****ING RAPPER OR SOME ****. THIS WILL NOT STAND!
Anyway, after that UNDEPENDABLE ABOMINATION TO ALL THINGS GOOD AND HOLY, this guy comes on to scold homie. I think my gamgam watches him. after that, homer commits genocide on the homeless. HOW IS THIS SHOW STILL ON?
But then we have our next segment: YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO GOLEM
So after a "joke" about something that'll NEVER catch on (Nobody wants HDTV's.) Bart discovers that Krusty has a Golem. Now to the show's credit, it isn't one of those baby pocket ****ers that Kidtendo makes, but an actual real life Golem. That's the ONLY credit they get, by the by.
He then talks about how Golems do whatever their master says, which in this case is mindless killing. After that, Hershell states that he'll need a shoebox full of blow to get through this dreck. Hey man, pass some over here, I think I need it too.
The Golem then becomes Bart's hitman or something until Lisa makes him speak. Then comes a bunch of jewish jokes and words and stuff. Look, I don't care, you don't care, nobody cares. Everyone knows the show S U C K S.
I bet you not even Krusty's dad finds this funny. I bet you he'd be anywhere right now.
The last segment in this treehouse of SUCK is THE DAY THE EARTH LOOKED STUPID
More like the day THIS EPISODE LOOKED STUPID!
So this episode is pretty blatantly a Fallout parody. I've heard people say that this is more like some radio thing, "World Wars" or something? I say bu******. It's Fallout.
So they finally admit it, Grandpa Abe is a timelord. Oh, he isn't? THEN WHY BREAK CONTINUITY? It isn't funny, it isn't clever, it's just dumb.
So The Brain narrates this made up story while everybody panics. EUGHHHHH, CAN YOU EVEN MAKE A FAKE STORY INTERESTING? Like anyone would panic over a radio show of all things. Um, hello? It's RADIO! What's next, are you going to be afraid that Dingo and The Baby are gonna get you? (A MacFarland and Greoning crossover? That'll be the day.)
And then they get naked and roll around in poopoo. I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP. It's to fool the Aliens or some guff, but it's stupid, lame and sucks. The real Aliens then show up and destroy the town. BUT YOU KNOW it won't stay. The show will go on and on and on. Hec*, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years we'll still have this filth.
And if you wouldn't believe it, IT ISN'T EVEN CONSISTENT FILTH! On my affiliate, Kang said something about how this is what Iraq would look like. But every other copy doesn't have it. Come on, Faux, if you can't even care enough to be consistent, why are you even here?
So in conclusion? This is quite possibly the worst piece of fiction to have ever exsisted. If this is what gets through the screening process, imagine the rejects. I honestly can't see them getting any worse than this episode. WORST. TREEHOUSE. OF. HORROR. EVER.

There are actually some solid-to-decent segments scattered around the remaining THOH specials but - like with the show - they're buried in a sea of raw sewage. I am looking forward to seeing how you receive them, though.
I'm also looking forward to your take on The Diving Bell and the Butterball which should legitimately earn a 0/10 score without a "just kidding" disclaimer.

Did the gratuitous crossover episodes appear yet? The ones like the American Idol crossover or the 24 spoof? Because this seems to be a little ironic considering how the show was used as a promo tool later on.

Yeah, I never liked E.T. It's a bit too cute and hokey, especially compared to the past and future work that Zimeckis and Speilberg did/would do. It needs more spoofs, in my mind.

MR AND MRS. SIMPSON
fuck this segment. fuck this segmentfuckthissegmentfuckthissegmentFUCKTHISSEGMENT.
So, on a Halloween show, you should expect Halloween things, right? So far, every segment has either been fully Halloween or has toed the line. Even things like that War of The Worlds parody or the Human hunting bit. Horror is Halloween. Sci-Fi is Halloween. Superheroes are Halloween. Spies, are not.
It feels like the only qualifier for being a THOH anymore is the amount of violence per second. While blood/guts/gore are decidedly related to the season, they don't mesh as well as they should with the rest of the THOH segments. Yes, I laughed a bit at some of the absurdities, but they're the type of lines that could have been in any episode, THOH or not.
Alright, so if it's purley action oriented, lets judge it for what it's trying to be, instead of what it isn't. In this sense, the action is decent enough. I guess I can't expect a DBZ scene or anything. For two folks fighting, it's OK.
It just sputters on all acounts. It's not funny enough, marginally action-packed and it's not even that memorable of a movie to parody.
HECK HOUSE

I was always a goodie-two-shoes growing up. No pranks for me, especially not on Halloween. So while some of it may be a tad lost, it's still is good to see the kids act like kids, and not like Kearnys. (As in, their whole jokes are that they have adult problems yet are kids)
"Cool, sin gets us something?" "I was just in it for the sin."
Reminder: The reigning pope at this time said that this show was a great role model that taught good wholesome family values.
Over time, the depections of hell have gotten better and better. Or at the very least, more surreal.
All in all, it's a pretty decent segment, but not even close to being a masterpiece.

So, on a Halloween show, you should expect Halloween things, right? So far, every segment has either been fully Halloween or has toed the line. Even things like that War of The Worlds parody or the Human hunting bit. Horror is Halloween. Sci-Fi is Halloween. Superheroes are Halloween. Spies, are not.
It feels like the only qualifier for being a THOH anymore is the amount of violence per second. While blood/guts/gore are decidedly related to the season, they don't mesh as well as they should with the rest of the THOH segments. Yes, I laughed a bit at some of the absurdities, but they're the type of lines that could have been in any episode, THOH or not.
Alright, so if it's purley action oriented, lets judge it for what it's trying to be, instead of what it isn't. In this sense, the action is decent enough. I guess I can't expect a DBZ scene or anything. For two folks fighting, it's OK.
It just sputters on all acounts. It's not funny enough, marginally action-packed and it's not even that memorable of a movie to parody.
HECK HOUSE

I was always a goodie-two-shoes growing up. No pranks for me, especially not on Halloween. So while some of it may be a tad lost, it's still is good to see the kids act like kids, and not like Kearnys. (As in, their whole jokes are that they have adult problems yet are kids)
"Cool, sin gets us something?" "I was just in it for the sin."
Reminder: The reigning pope at this time said that this show was a great role model that taught good wholesome family values.
Over time, the depections of hell have gotten better and better. Or at the very least, more surreal.
All in all, it's a pretty decent segment, but not even close to being a masterpiece.

TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XIX
So here we have an infamous segment. I don't really want to talk about it all that much, but the success of it led to follow-ups in future election years. Really, if you're looking to modern-day Simpsons to provide any decent level of political satire, then you're in the wrong place by a county mile.
UNTITLED ROBOT PARODY
Was this around the time when the Micheal Bay films were starting? Because otherwise, it seems odd that they're parodying it now.
The segments do still keep up a good pace, or at the very least try to. Gags like these could deal with having a little trimmed off the top, but they're still fine in comparison to clunky, awkward exposition, like with Lisa's reaction to the present.
Having one of the settings be Christmas is a nice change of pace. There's been quite a few holiday horrors over the years. Maybe they'll run out of ideas and we'll get a Silent Night, Deadly Night spoof in Season 35?
I do find it odd that we have both Transformer inspired robots...
...as well as more direct knock-off's of the Transformer leaders. Did they get cold feet with Legal? I could probably ignore that if the jokes were good, but the plot being so anemic and the Transformer jokes being either visual gags or ones you could see for miles (The Boombox one looks Feminine, but the voice is deep and masculine! That's the joke.YOU SUCK, MCBAINE.) makes me notice it more than I should have.

This segment truly feels like a mixture of both mockery and love. What with the backgrounds, music, animation and plot points.
We've also come full circle. One of the original creators (I want to say it was Brooks?) student films was "Bring Me The Head Of Charlie Brown". So it feels extra well crafted.
"All pumpkins are racist. The difference is that I admit it."
It even has funny lines outside of the obvious parodies. It's a Halloween miracle!
This segment is the closest a THOH has come to being put on the same pedestal as the classics. It isn't perfect (Maybe a little snappier intro), but it's still really really good.

A lot of the later THOH episodes kinda run together in my mind but I remember THOHXVII (sooooo many letters...) because Fox ran a special contest for that one. They had a thing where fans could design a promo for the episode, editing together a series of like 10-20 clips available on there. The prize was getting your promo to air on Fox as well as some other fan stuff (a tour? can't remember).
It was a pretty ambitious contest by The Simpsons standards since they had to build an editing program into a browser. Had music samples and cards and transitions and stuff too. It was pretty fun to play around with.
TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XX
-The images this time around are a bit bigger. I'm not sure entirely why, but I'll be searching other sites for different sized framegrabs. (Currently using the site: The War of the Simpsons-
The show moved to HD at this point, as well as a 4-act structure. This basically means that the intros are back. They aren't particularly great, mind. This one is about the Universal monsters fucking about until their wives come and find them. Eventually they get more creative and memorable, but for now, there's a ton of kinks to work out.
DIAL "M" FOR MURDER OR PRESS "#" TO RETURN TO MAIN MENU
Call me an old fuck if you wish, but when I see The Simpsons wikia call this segment "Press Hashtag to Return to Main Menu", I die a little inside.
"Lisa, Don't take it personally. I barely spent any time on this decision."
Hoover is such an underrated character overall. Just simply not giving a single fuck about any of her students. Life has just ruined her and shat on her dreams.
"I've been waiting for you... and trying to figure out how girls pee."
Some of these lines, while alright at best, feel more like fodder for any sitcom, and not something that taps into the strengths the show possesses. I can almost taste the pauses where a laugh track would go.
I will give it alright points for having decent imagery during the chase scenes. It's mostly inspired by other Hitchcock films (I think. Haven't seen as many of them as I'd like.) but not so obtuse that you cant get it.
DON'T HAVE A COW, MANKIND
Quite possibly the only time I could say something is zombie Simpsons without complaints- PLAY ME OFF, PAUL!
"DAD, NO! THAT'S THE LAST BOOK IN THE WORLD!" "Really?" "YES IT'S- oh... go ahead."
A different spin on the Zombie Apocalypse plot done earlier in THOH III, this time around, the cure is Bart himself rather then a reversed spell. I guess since the sub-genre exploded when this was made, it's only natural that the show take another crack at it.
Is this the latest appearance of Rainer Wolfcastle? It seems like he's an easy character to write for. (Genuinely don't know and are curious.)
It just feels like there wasn't a decent enough amount of trope parody in this segment. There's a metric fuckton to make fun of with modern zombie flicks, but they didn't even scratch the surface. (Plus, the ending was abrupt as all fuck.)
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE MOE BUSINESS
A friend of mine in HS was really a big fan of Sweeny Todd. While I didn't see it myself until after this segment aired, I still know enough about it to see that it's a decent take on the matter.
It's a different take from the regular THOH's that actually has an excuse for it's slower pace. Really moody as well.
By no means is it perfect, though. It doesn't take enough jabs at the source material for it to be a parody, and the songs aren't good enough for it to be a decent tribute. It's just competent at what it does. For these really late segments, that's all you can ask for, really.
With 20 specials in the bag, you'd hope they'd not have to resort to non-horror/scifi movie parodies in the future. The genres are such a rich tapestry that it'd be a shame to not explore every depth of what can be done, right?

We go from Halloween hyper-violence to time travel DVRs to a parody of the US version of The Office's intro. It seems like they couldn't make a choice as to what they wanted to do with the whole thing, so they did a little bit of all three, resulting in 3 half-baked ideas instead of one good one.

Jumanji/Zathura's not really my first choice when it comes to "Horror" or anything similar, but maybe they can make something out of it?
Definitive proof that the show is fiction: A Triple-A M rated Wii game.
I'm going to spare you the pictures (It's a drawn out gag), but in this segment, the show's aversion to saying brand names shines brighter than the red light district on the sun. Examples: Funopoly, Battleboat, Yahtzu, Ravenous Ravenous Rhinos. I'm guessing as the show got bigger and bigger, legal got more and more worried that someone would sue? They are right to worry, though. Fox's lawyers are notoriously weak and passive. They couldn't defend themselves in any courtroom.
"Maybe I'm just tired of living..."
I swear, it feels like 90% of this segment is just board game references with nothing else funny about them. With writing, it's not enough to just reference something. You need to do something with it, like a joke, a dramatic twist, a XXX spoof, ANYTHING.
It's a shame too. The premise was interesting enough, but it felt like they were just going through the motions more than anything. Maybe I'm just too picky, I don't know anymore.

Dead Calm isn't the most famous film to spoof, but the show is in need of another water based horror segment. And since they refuse to jump on the bandwagon and do a C'thulu segment, this is the next best thing.
More and more I see Simpsons merch aimed at kids again. Yet with segments like these with groan-worthy boner jokes (Homer's Ringtone and text message tones are cartoon sound effects used when character's have stiffies in other shows), I'm not sure if even the writers know who their target audience is anymore.
"They should call this one: Recipe for Murder!" "Which one?" "Never mind"
It probably wasn't meant to be taken this way, but I see the line as a bit of self-hatred towards how lazy the titles have become. (Much like the lines about THOH in Halloween of Horror)
However, the first twist of the guy telling the truth was alright enough. It was ruined by the nonsensical stinger of Maggie spoofing A Clockwork Orange.
TWEENLIGHT
Ah, this feels so nostalgic. Not the segment, nor the thing it's referencing, but the hatred around the thing it's referencing. Twilight parodies, spoofs, takedowns and jabs were endless. Mind you, it did leave an impact on YA works that's felt even today, but in terms of the actual content, it feels like nobody remembers it. Maybe I just need to wait a few more years before Tumblr gets a hold of it again and makes it nostalgically trendy.

I'm a big fan of the Dial M for Murder segment but, then again, I have a deep affinity for the Hitchcock material it was parodying.

The next one on Toad.T's plate is arguably the worst of the bunch.
Incidentally, Halloween of Horror deserves a screening more than any of the THOH specials that follow so I hope he takes the time to screen it if he has yet to do so.

I did see Halloween of Horror when it first aired, but I'm not quite sure if I'll re-watch it. If I do, It'll probably be as a short blurb at the end with an epilogue.
I also have a bit of a question. I need a good framegrab site for THOH 23 onward. I can't do Simpsons World because i'm from Canada and our over-the-air streaming services are a little slow, eh. (More as in non-exsistant) Are there any other good sites other than the Simpsons Wikia?

I barely remember any of these Halloween bits anymore. I guess my knowledge wains after the Great Pumpkin ep. The only recent Halloween ep that sticks in my mind is the Halloween of Horror, but more because it was a well done episode with several great sub plots (and some great dialogue).

ANTHOLOGY OF INTEREST II
After a rough first start, we get into the really good stuff with this year's AOI. It's hard for something that's so off the wall to have any fantastic plotlines, but I gotta hand it to them, they did great!
WHAT IF BENDER WERE A HUMAN?
One of the absolute classics of the series, it serves as both a window into the human condition as well as being pretty damn funny. I especially like how-

TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XXII
So yeah, this episode. Hated by many a folk, it's been called the worst THOH. The intro doesn't do much to alleviate these fears either. It's one thing to be out of character, but it's another to just be a parody of yourself. Marge takes her kids' candy without asking under the guise of being a good mom, while Homer chews through multiple limbs (Bone included) just to get some treats. I know, i know, THOH's are different and supposed to be wacky, but the show has gone full-on cartoon at this point. It looses all appeal when there's no difference between the status quo and the satire.
THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERBALL
Odd title, but maybe it's based off of some foreign flick or something. Like it's a Bollywood horror, or maybe some independent Japanese horror short, or maybe-
...this is probably the farthest thing from horror you could ever be. (Traditional horror, anyway. There could be psychological horror mined from this concept.)
So far, the script feels so stilted and full of traditional sitcom beats. Where as before I could taste the laugh track, now it's sitting uncomfortably in my lap.
The jokes attempted aren't landing for me, while the gimmick of farting to communicate is wearing out it's welcome immediately. Now don't get me wrong, I am open to all forms of comedy, juvenile ones included. But you need timing. Timing and the will to not overdo something.
They can't even focus on a topic! I would have accepted the first plot as a joke subversion of the audiences expectations. "Oh, you wanted your yearly comedic trip into the bizarre, the spooky and the strange? TOO BAD,WALUIGI DRAMATIC BIOPIC TIME!" But then they jump into a quarter-hearted Spiderman spoof because... why not? It's not even a funny spoof, either. That sign is the closest I grimaced throughout this entire segment.
DIAL D FOR DIDDILY
Alright class, time to get out your notes. Today's lecture is a follow up on how deities are presented in The Simpsons.
One of the only highlights in this episode.
So this segment is a Dexter parody. Pop-culture osmosis has filled me in on the gist of the show, as well as certain scenes of it. For example, even I could see that the intro is just... the intro to Dexter. Sounds obvious, I know, but for a character like Flanders, the fake-outs lose their effect. Shouldn't it be the opposite if you're doing a spoof? Like you see Ned help an old lady across the street and into a firing squad, or see him looking through his bible only to reveal that it's actually a hit list? Yeah, these aren't funny, but at least they're more fitting to the tone you want to establish with the parody. (They do something similar later on, but I'm talking about the intro.)
The non-Dexter jokes either go on too long, like when Homer describes his car problems as God, or are just dull like above. It takes a loooootttt of effort to make Looney Tunes of all things dull.
I want you to look back at the pictures I specified of YHWH and Beelzebub. Really take a look at them. In all of them, they had a sense of scale to them that corresponded with their beliefs. God had radiance glowing from every pore of his form and felt as majestic as his voice. Satan had a sense of power emanating from him that showed you without a doubt that you fucked up, big time and were going to pay for it. Here, both of them have the presence of just another Springfieldian. It sort of mirrors the show in a sense. Early on, the show felt it was special and it did whatever it could to live up to your expectations of it. Later on, while not as imposing as before, it realized it still had some form of worth and earned it's keep, even if it wasn't at it's best effort. Now, it just acts as just another TV show, filling up a slot on Sundays, with zero presence or attempts to grab your attention.. But if it doesn't grab it, well, who cares? You were probably going to watch America's Funniest Videos or Toonami or some Youtube clip of the couch gag or something. You won't care, so why should we put in the effort to try and make you care on a week-to-week basis?
Not even succubus Maude could save this segment.

TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XXII
So yeah, this episode. Hated by many a folk, it's been called the worst THOH. The intro doesn't do much to alleviate these fears either. It's one thing to be out of character, but it's another to just be a parody of yourself. Marge takes her kids' candy without asking under the guise of being a good mom, while Homer chews through multiple limbs (Bone included) just to get some treats. I know, i know, THOH's are different and supposed to be wacky, but the show has gone full-on cartoon at this point. It looses all appeal when there's no difference between the status quo and the satire.
THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERBALL
Odd title, but maybe it's based off of some foreign flick or something. Like it's a Bollywood horror, or maybe some independent Japanese horror short, or maybe-

So far, the script feels so stilted and full of traditional sitcom beats. Where as before I could taste the laugh track, now it's sitting uncomfortably in my lap.
The jokes attempted aren't landing for me, while the gimmick of farting to communicate is wearing out it's welcome immediately. Now don't get me wrong, I am open to all forms of comedy, juvenile ones included. But you need timing. Timing and the will to not overdo something.
They can't even focus on a topic! I would have accepted the first plot as a joke subversion of the audiences expectations. "Oh, you wanted your yearly comedic trip into the bizarre, the spooky and the strange? TOO BAD,
DIAL D FOR DIDDILY
Alright class, time to get out your notes. Today's lecture is a follow up on how deities are presented in The Simpsons.
One of the only highlights in this episode.
So this segment is a Dexter parody. Pop-culture osmosis has filled me in on the gist of the show, as well as certain scenes of it. For example, even I could see that the intro is just... the intro to Dexter. Sounds obvious, I know, but for a character like Flanders, the fake-outs lose their effect. Shouldn't it be the opposite if you're doing a spoof? Like you see Ned help an old lady across the street and into a firing squad, or see him looking through his bible only to reveal that it's actually a hit list? Yeah, these aren't funny, but at least they're more fitting to the tone you want to establish with the parody. (They do something similar later on, but I'm talking about the intro.)

THE GREATEST STORY EVER HOLED
You take a throwaway joke in the first THOH and make a whole segment about it. Can't wait for the gripping story of the BBQ that exploded and then horror stuff happened.
I think this was around the time in which they tried to drum up attention with the Nedna social media campaign, right? It's interesting to me what they'll try to do to keep the show in people's minds. Guest intros, crossovers, mixed media episodes, you name it.
You know, with the image quality and all, this seems like a great cover for one of those Simpsonwave compilations. Y O U D O N ' T W I N F R I E N D S W I T H S A L A D .
And then it just ends with Zune worship. Anticlimatic would be sugar coating this ending.
UNNORMAL ACTIVITY
It feels weird that they're just getting to found footage parodies now. Blair Witch seemed like the perfect thing to spoof back when it was popular, yet they skipped by it. Even Scooby Doo did a spoof of it. (Speaking of, props for the staff not giving in and doing a full on Scooby Doo segment during one of these. There's way too many more films to cover before the dog gets his day.)
DeadHomerSociety brought this up when they were doing their look through, and I agree: The pacing feels more sitcom like than ever before. Gone is the high speed delivery of multiple jokes per minute and instead it's been swapped with beats so predictable, you can set your watch to them.
And yet other times, the jokes are so drawn out, they make Family Guy tap their wrist watch.
They could be funny if they weren't so drawn out. Like here, if they just left the reason at "There's nothing on TV", then it'd be fine enough. But then they keep hammering in the joke to the point that it loses any impact it might have had.
BART & HOMER'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
I'm a sucker for anything BTTF related. I hope they do wonders with the material.
They really get to the point quickly with Professor Frink Deus Ex Machining the hell out of the time car. I guess the show can be quick and nimble when it needs to be. (Sadly, It cannot however float through the air, nor climb up trees.)
Man, even the Itchy and Scratchy shorts have gotten lazier. What's the setup here?
Lovitz does an alright job, but the lines he's fed are so stiff and exposition heavy. Jokes can't even get a say in edgewise. The plot feels the same way, so it's not just him.

THOH XXI was the first Simpsons I watched in years---I was in a hospital and everyone was laughing like it was the funniest thing in the world and I was like "0.o". I remember the bizarre non-sequitur Clockwork Orange scene elicited cheers, but honestly I don't think anyone there besides me knew what it was spoofing.
I was the youngest one there so it's not really a "modern kids LOVE the Simpsons" deal, honestly it seems older folks are probably more tolerant of it.

We begin this tale of both Horror and sorrow with an intro directed by Guillermo del Toro.
It's packed to the brim with references and nods, both obscure ones for fans and simple ones for clods.
Pacific Rim, Hitchcock, Blade and Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Lovecraft, it all brings me great joy!
He saw the chance and he took it, this Mr. Del Toro. I've watched it 50 times and I still want more-o!
My one complaint is it's not the best for a laugh, but with an intro like this? Why that complaint is just daft!
Horror is varied, from grotesque to cute. Sometimes it's just best to just pay tribute.
OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL D'OH!
From looking above, each lady and sir better realize that i'm writing in iambic pentameter.
I thought it was fitting for me to cut loose, and write like Ted Geissel, better known as Seuss.
So as such, this review will be written in prose, as tribute to one of my earliest heroes.
They've nailed the design, I have to say. It's Springfield mixed in with that iconic sway.
The spooks come to light and are in position, through a childish view on chaos, a wonderful juxtaposition.
They stop for a jab through a green Lorax expy, at how Tinsletown finds adaptations so very sexy.
I suppose it is necessary to do the entire Suess-verse, but I'd just prefer cameos, for better or worse.
The main cusp of the joke is the Cat is insane, which, while not done as often, still feels quite inane.
But it's done with such love, that I say it rocks. Apart from some weird quriks, (Seriously, Guy Faulks?)
If you're looking for quality in a season so dire, this is one to recommend, it's one to desire.
It's over so quick, it doesn't feel like it drags, the jokes are great, and the plot has very few snags.
Is it classic level? To that, I'd say no. The concept on display has been done to and fro.
But in the series' back half, you could do worse. Of the 20's-30's, this segment is first.

I could rant and i could rave about the deja vu that comes with this segment, but I don't want to.
Each episode, even now, is somebody's first. So I should view it with an optimistic burst.
There are funny bits that do give me a giggle and a grin, but they go a tad long, much to my chagrin.
People may misunderstand that I'm being a copy, saying things suck with writing so sloppy.
But I still do like the show, what can I say? If I didn't, why would I watch episodes on premier day?
I just feel it could be better, one of the best of showbiz. Even if you don't bring up the past like half of GAF is.
(With this scene, I found it odd that Al Jean and his cronies never made an episode mocking the bronies.)
For example, this ending feels awfully truncated, so what could be done to make viewers elated?
Trim a joke here and there? Cut out useless scenes? This is critique that I strive for, not just being mean.

A segment taking place near the roaring fourties? Well, this wouldn't be done with the Ricks or the Mortys.
No, I must not moan, and I must not bitch. I made a promise to watch them, and it's one I shan't ditch.
I've once heard that ol' Matt despised a lost Hitler joke. So I wonder what changed in the mind of that bloke?
Of course he's not the writer, is he the showrunner? Nay. But I thought that at least he'd have final say.
The design of the freaks is decent enough, complemented by sepia and colors so rough.
But the plot has little buildup, if I must critique. It's a small nitpick though, with a style so unique.
Some parts go on long, some parts fly by quick. I think I should know that it's the show's new shtick.
But it's hard to look at episodes in a vacuum, as the show has been running for many a moon.
If there's nothing to compare to, it's inoffensive at best, but when put on a ranking, it doesn't pass the test.
But these shorts didn't make me feel green, see red or turn orange. And for that, they're fine enough, so...
...i've got nothing.

Well the beginning of that last THOH episode was good - the couch gag/intro was ace as was the first act, then it predictably fell apart

SCHOOL IS HELL
You guys should seriously read Life in Hell if you haven't already, or even if you have. I found a big collection of the strips in a now gone bookstore and loved every moment of it. It has the charm of an underground comic with the humor of the best Calvin and Hobbes moments.
In these last few years, I've noticed there's been an honest attempt at fixing the stigma the show's gotten. The pacing's gotten a touch snappier, the gags are slightly quicker paced and the satire is a tinge more biting. It's much better than it was from 2005-2012. (Only marginally, though.)
While somewhat generic, I do like the designs used for the hell beasts this segment. I can't really put my finger on why, though.
"Hot Stuff? I didn't realize you were that evil." "No, I'm being punished for how lame my comics were."
I laughed. It's sort of a lost reference though. Other than Casper (and mayyybee Ritchie Rich), the Harvey comics characters never really made an impact on pop culture. I don't even know when the last Hot Stuff comic was.

It's another one of those times where pop culture osmosis helps me out in understanding every small reference and detail. Well that, and watching a review of the porno parody.

This feels like a segment that should be up my alley. For the most part it does work, yet it feels off.
I mean, the past models are recreated down to the animation quirks, the meta commentary is fine enough, as is the dialogue between the past and future selves. I don't know, it just feels a little hollow. Maybe it's because the voice recreations are 50/50? (Bart and Homer are good, Lisa and Marge didn't even try)
I think another reason why is because there's no real reason why they kill themselves other than to move the story along.
Alright, I need to settle something. When this first aired, I talked with my friends about this reference-tastic scene. (I'm a secret weeb, but only slightly so.) I said that SLH is supposed to be Shenron from DBZ (Not only due to the design, but also due to the fact that the rest of the family are characters from other Shohen animes). They said that it's one of the dragons from Spirited Away. What side is right?
But regardless of that, this scene just feels sterile, especially with some of the newer versions they had to concoct. (Adventure Timesons, Archersons, South Parksons, Minionsons) Like it was made for listicles or other similar sites to get attention.

I think another reason why is because there's no real reason why they kill themselves other than to move the story along.
Alright, I need to settle something. When this first aired, I talked with my friends about this reference-tastic scene. (I'm a secret weeb, but only slightly so.) I said that SLH is supposed to be Shenron from DBZ (Not only due to the design, but also due to the fact that the rest of the family are characters from other Shohen animes). They said that it's one of the dragons from Spirited Away. What side is right?
But regardless of that, this scene just feels sterile, especially with some of the newer versions they had to concoct. (Adventure Timesons, Archersons, South Parksons, Minionsons) Like it was made for listicles or other similar sites to get attention.

I was watching those yesterday, since I saw a piece of trivia that stated that Milhouse was originally introduced in one of those ads before he was actually in the show. Not sure how true that is, but it might explain why Bart originally hung around with Wendle, Lewis and Richard for the first season or so before Milhouse entered the frame.
Unless the commercials came before Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, that might be inaccurate.
