The shortest of the 3, but it depends on if you just go from plot point to plot point or do some end game sidequesting.

I didn't do many sidequests. According to my achievements, I finished Part 1 on September 4th, Part 2 on September 18th, and Part 3 on September 20th. I started the game on August 29th. Although in Part 2 I wasted at least 2 - 3 days on not being able to beat secret missions >=(

I don't think so, but a lot of them disappear after some events. However, I am worried about a room I missed in the Ghost Ship that you can't get back to. I'm pretty damn sure there's just a chest or two in there since there was a save point a few screens from it, but you never know.

Yeah, if you do well throughout the game, you'll probably end up with around 6k grade, no farming or anything. Which means with two runthroughs you can probably pick up enough grade without farming anything. But that's no fun!

So this is my first tales game ever, and I am getting a little frustrated trying to figure out how the 'artes' system actually works. Any kind of discussion i've been able to find deals with 'altered artes' and 'blast artes' and 'mystic arts' or some stuff like that. These discussions all assume a base-level of understanding that i do not have.

I would like to know how I gain new regular 'artes' (i guess both base and arcane)...forget about the altered, blast, and mystic for now. After unlocking them randomly i started checking the usage number for all other artes for the char...it definitely seems like a certain number of uses of one arte will unlock another different arte...but there are also times when it seems like a char gains an arte just mid-battle, without any arte being used.

what are the things that dermine learning a new base/arcane arte? is there a list of all base/arcane artes and their prerequisites anywhere?

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Base artes: Gain by leveling. Reach the required level and the next time you enter battle and pull off an arte(any arte) you'll get the NEW ARTE! message.

Arcane Artes: Same deal I believe. They just are costlier in TP value and usually combine two base artes for a more dramatic damage-consuming skill.

Altered Artes: These require equipping a certain skill you learn from weapons. (Described very obviously in its info bar...'Hellfire' - change an arte to something new). Basically have the skill turned on and figure out which arte gets altered in combat...perform that new altered arte 100 times and it will be learned and can be used independently of equipping the skill. There is no way to assess how close to 100 uses you are, but when you do hit the threshold, you'll get a 'new arte learned!' message and it will appear in your arte listing.

Mystic Artes: These require at least Overlimit level Three activated. Just turn on overlimit, pull off an arcane or altered arte; hold B down during the arte animation and then you get a chintzy anime flash and a cutscene showing your doing crazy damage. They are basically super moves you pull off. Mostly useful against bosses or long encounters. Not too complicated.

ahh ty...i knew my logic was somewhat off. was it like this in other tales games? if i read a faq for symphonia (i think that was the last one...right?) will i get an idea of the level requirements for new artes?

what other mechanic's are there that carry over from past tales games? i'm surprised there isnt more basic info out there on vesperia yet, but i guess fans of the franchise already know what's up. what else can i glean from a symphonia faq?

Usually in older Tales games, you discovered new artes through constant use, sometimes tied to leveling as well(Hit level 10 and have used Arte X 100 times to earn Arte Y!). In Vesperia, it is far more straightforward as I described.

Older Tales games also relied heavily on discovering better artes through sidequests or as treasure smattered in the world. That has been cut back significantly as only a scant few optional artes are obtained via sidequests or conversations in Vesperia.

Basically, don't rely on faqs for other games. Just look at Vesperia ones.

I don't have it either, but did you
rebuild Aurnion? If you do, another save point will be there.

Yeah. That too. Mine is still 1066 with Repede.
I'm currently at 76, which is my lowest for any Tales game Eternia and up. :\

I do plan to turn Minimum Damage on at some point to try and grab the 100 Hit Combo achievement and title.

I used have a lot of fun with Judith until I saw some combo videos for her on youtube. Now I ignore her because I know I can't replicate those combos.

It's never a good idea to look up combo videos on YouTube, it's never NOT shaming. :lol

How come I can't synth regular Dice? I'd love to have four Blue Dice equipped while trying to get 600 Fatal Strikes.

Mine is only 155, would have been more if the other characters would have helped a bit.

Getting Rita and Estelle through the Arena is proving to be a huge pain in the ass.

Eh? Rita's one of the easier ones. Tidal Wave Overlimit spam works without the minimum damage too, you know. :p

Doesn't last long enough and then either Nan or the other hunting blade rip her to shreds. I'm sure for most people it's easy. I'm just a moron. :lol

Just go in with a full overlimit (four bars) and use Overlimit level 1.

Fatal Strikes. So awesome. :lol

I set everyone to Minimum Damage and went out trying to complete the Dog Map and get all the Fatal Strike titles. I went from 5800 Grade to 7200 Grade in one night. I could seriously play the entire game using nothing but Fatal Strikes, it's so satisfying. Since I had Rita set to cast nothing but Fireball (it's awesome for pushing green strikes) she now shoots SEVEN at once after all that.

What's the point of cooking? I can't seem to find a menu where I can use the food I make

Cooking is an instant use item. As soon as you cook the meal, it is used. Each Recipe does something different, be that HP or TP restores, stats, or status cures. It's best to cook often and constantly. Scrolling down at the cooking menu, will net you the direction commands that allow you to cook at the end of a battle. This saves time, and it's a little more obvious as to the effect than in the menu. I also recommend a guide because getting the best recipes can be described as obtuse at best and down down right ridiculous at worst.

---

After consulting a guide last night because I was having a problem with a side quest, I discovered the wonderful fact that I had missed the first step in it. I could see steps 2-5 regardless, but because I missed step 1, I could not complete it. In annoyance, I took Estelle through the arena, beating it on the second try (I only lost the first time because she was stoned). I still haven't beaten it with Rita. I'm beginning to believe there is something wrong with me.

After that, I beat the final boss, which wasn't hard with everyone between 75-78, saw the pretty mediocre ending, then challenged they EX dungeon. I'm not entirely sure I want to finish it.

The side quests in the game are infuriating. What they really need in the next game is a "Side Quest Book." Much like the Monster and Item Books, it'll fill in as you accept side quests so you keep track of all the crap going on in the game. And of course, with as many side quests as there are it's just ridiculous that there are so many pieces and parts that are time limited and even worse than that is how many obtuse triggers there are without and kind of significance to move them along.

Anyway, I think after I beat it I'll do a quick low level challenge and give it a rest for a while before I do the 15 hour challenge (which I'll also try to use to grab any missing items/titles, etc.) The damn achievements are going to make me play this game twice. But this is the first time I've had enough grade to get the Experience x10 bonus, so it should be fun.

I definitely plan to play through it again, once I've gotten Rita through the Arena, so that I can go back for the side quest I missed. It's
Judy's spear. If you don't scene a scene in Rita's house right when you get Rita, you can't get it.
Very annoying.

This is the first game I'm contemplating beating two more times (once for 15 hour achievement, once more to 100%)... Which is weird because it's a 40 hour game and I find 20 hour games too long most of the time.

What's the fastest way to earn gald? I have like 120k chips on Nam Cobanda Island now. I also can't get the slots open... says something about a coin.

That's like 600+ battles o_O More than I did in my entire playthrough.
I figured out an easier way I think. Buy tons of items with chips and then sell them. I got 5million chips now playing Poker =)

Yeah, you can stock up on Holy Avenger +1 from the casino. Keep getting 15 of them and I think you earn about 315,000 gald everytime you sell it all off. Another alternative is keep using the slot machine that takes 100 chips, it frequently gives 30,000 gald. It can get you 2-3 million in an hour or so, probably better to use the Holy Avenger method unless you have an auto-fire controller though.

Is there any point in doing the 30, 50, and 80 man coliseums for every character? They seem to be the same enemies each time for the first 30/50/80 so I'm guessing just doing the 100s is fine? Or even just 200s?

I'd try beating 100 with everyone, no need for the others. I think you need to beat it with 3-4 characters along with beating the EX dungeon before you can even unlock 200, not sure if there's any point in beating that one with multiple people though.

Bleh, wait. It looks like only Estelle gets a title for beating 100, everyone else has a title for 200.

I found the fastest way to make money was to do the 500 chip prize thing on Nam Cobanda. One of the prizes is a capsule with 150,000 gald. It took me about 30 minutes to rack up a million gald.

gah halp, end of game and the game asks

"End save?"

WTF do I do

choose no means I can continue on? or would that stop my new game+ ability?
there is still stuff I would like to do in this save if possible

Go ahead and save. If you want to keep playing, just load that save. It will place you at the last save point. The new game plus is an option at the main menu.

edit ok, it alternates every other time now... it must be cause I beat the game lol

why cant they do this with the voice tracks lol, beat the game once and unlock japanese voice tracks
