My girlfriend says I am too cynical because I believe everything online is fake. I don’t see how it can not be. The entire goal of people posting these things is for attention and/or money, so it seems clear that people will do whatever it takes to get it. People have been doing this for as long as we have had media: faked photos of fairies, UFO abduction stories, crop circles, etc.

Just as the internet back in 1995 was populated with genuine people and has slowly been usurped by personal and organizational greed, so has social media.
