Really? One of the major "features" in the game is replaying it and going to new locations you missed in a previous playthrough through different choices.

Yeah you don't even see all the locations on your first play through. I know what he's saying but I love replaying RPGs. And there sounds like there's plenty of replay in this one.

Rainbow would totally lose the feel. Here is a more visible version if others agree, but I think the other one has a more magical feel and I can read it just fine.

Ah, only weekdays, right... I think I'll just leave it on the Steam version.

It's not the same.
I played through ff7 4 times (entirely), and enjoyed each playthrough, despite the linearity.
But the first one was obviously the true 'experience'.
You get taken away on the adventure, see the world, enjoy the story, get wowed by everything you didn't expect.

It's still why I play rpgs (even if 90 percent of them dissapoint).
It's a feeling I still chase, and that this game might once again give me.

Only kotor, ff8, ffx and xenogears have worked that way for me previously.

I did what you intended to do and yeah you won't get your money back in time. They told me 3-5 days so I'll be out $45 until Steam until the money clears.

On the other hands they can credit your Steam wallet instantly. I strongly considered buying Portal 2 for a long hard moment, nearly fell into their trap haha.

wow... that trailer was amazing. I recently build a nice PC and have been enjoying it connected to my plasma tv with a game controller, just like playing console games yet with better graphics. I think I should pick this up, i wonder how the controller support will be.

goddamn, I've been listening to the preorder OST tracks and TW1 OST like a total nerd, hype levels are critical

anyways, a few more decent shots that I didn't post before. nothing special but worth a look if you're fiending for more

a few more concepts too:

Hate to beat a dead horse, but people are talking about GT 260s and ever since I got my 4850 (512mb, yeah, I know) I turned my brain off videocards. All I want to know is if I should be able to get a decent framerate at 720p on medium or low. I'll be playing the game alot over the years and that's fine, but if I can't play the game at all until I get a new computer, that'd be depressing.

Don't worry, it's a sure thing unless TW2 bombs (god forbid).

The real version was made a priority but it's clear that they want to release the game on consoles and the tech is ready.

If there was every an argument for graphical fidelity/power as an enabler for artistic vision, its this game. Its ridiculous how close those screens resemble the concept art, the sheer detail is incredible.

Snuggler said:

Is that really ingame?
Look at the texture work on the metal of the door, and look at the stones on the ceiling above the door.

That is concept art quality.

edit: from the looks of those black lines around certain edges (parts of the door and the pulley) and the highlights etc it looks like those screenshots were touched up.

Obligatory I can tell, pixels in my day etc etc

When I get the game I'm going to go to that scene, look at the door and then make a thread about it.

If you could play 1, do it. Its going to be a long wait before the console port. But if you could play 1, I don't know why you wouldn't play 2 on the PC.

Good luck. I bought a new GPU and PSU just to run this at super sexy settings. Now, I'm living the modern day "If you give a mouse a cookie" book in that I now need new fans for my case, and probably will end up with a new mobo and processor.

How big is your HD? You can make a new partition out of some empty space, say 50-100 gigs, and then install Windows on that, and have both Mac and Windows at the same time.

Pardon me if this question has been asked and answered before:

I'm interested in Witcher 2, but missed the first one. Is it necessary to play it, or is there a highlight reel that will catch me up?

The OP spoils the first game for you. Plus about a dozen YouTube videos can catch you up, if necessary.

Yep (for the millionth time lol). Still, neither of those things can compare to playing the game for yourself.

Without playing it, I'm sure you'll be able to keep up with the plot and it'll still kick ass but it's definitely adventageous to have played through TW1 first. You'll be familiar with Geralt and the TW universe, you'll be able to import your OWN decisions, you'll know the characters and their relationship with Geralt. Plus, it's a flawed but great game that deserves to be played. But in the end, it's all up to you, don't play it if it seems like a chore to you.

The sequel continues from where the first game ended. It might be possible to enjoy sequel after just reading summaries, but there is no question that playing Witcher 2 after 1 is the preferred option. I'm skeptical of how well the political and social conflicts can be summarized in comparison to experiencing the gradual way the first game introduced and developed them.

If you are curious about the first game at all, which is fantastic even today, GoG has a special promo price of $4.99.

I'd buy a kick in the teeth at that price. Sold.

Edit: I'm not at home currently. Can I buy now and download later? I'm not sure how GOG downloads work to be honest.

Edit 2: Stupid question, I bought Psychonauts here in the past and can see the redownload option. Super duper.

Reading the books would give you far more insight into the world of the witcher, and they aren't too long either.

It's also been stated that the second game can be treated as a 'standalone' adventure.

They got another developer to do the TW1 port and they didn't think it was good enough so they canned it. This time they have said they are going to do it themselves and have even been checking it out on 360 while making the PC version. It will definitely happen. That hidden still in the trailer even had a nice little nod to PS3. They are already looking profitable so I would expect them to have a team working on the porting already.

Best thing about GOG is you can download it whenever you want and back it up on a disc rather than have to re-download but they give you that option as well. The GOG downloader is super fast so if you are at work it might be okay to download it and then burn it to disc/chuck on a usb.

I agree, regarding the books, but the slow English translation makes me wary of recommending it at the moment.

While CDPR has stated that the second game is standalone, previews have mentioned that the game expects the player to be aware of the events from and the characters of the first game. Even one of the trailers released today contains some explicit references to the events of the first game.

That said, even if the second game were entirely standalone, I'd still recommend the first game because a)it's highs are incredibly high, b)$4.99 and c)it has a beautiful soundtrack which is worth the price alone.

The Last Wish is fine to recommend given that it's just a few collected short stories, the last of which sets up the next five (?) books and it gives you a decent view of the world of The Witcher. The book is a series of contained experiences, unlike Blood of Elves.

Anyone know if/what it defaults on decisions from the first game? Mostly the big ones...
Abigail lives or dies, romance option, the 3 end paths.

For those interested in the song playing during the Disdain & Fear trailer, I've tracked it down.

It's a remix of "Varg Timmen (Hour of the Wolf)" by Scandinavian folk rock band Hedningarna. Very appropriate title for Geralt, no?

Wow, thank you for posting this! The haunting version of the Witcher title theme from the first game is so beautiful here.

Still on the fence about buying the game on Steam or GoG. GoG seems nice, but I want my game collected in one place when possible. Has there been any clear confirmation about whether or note the Steam version will include Securom?
