That, for me, was the most disappointing thing ever since it was loaded with merchants and had trash all over.

Thats why you dont go to Badaling, since that isnt even the original part but something that was kinda "rebuilt" in the 70s.

If you are in Beijing and drive a bit more out, there are still old original parts of the Great Wall that you can climb and hike around. Of course you need to be a bit adventurous. Actually the real "charme" of Beijing is hidden inside the hutongs and smaller parts of the city not many tourists, western and chinese, know.
