USAToday: 'Tis the season for celeb cameos in video game ads

I'm not even sure that any of these celebrities even have an acting role in any of these games.

Some celebrities are clocking in extra holiday spirit this year, with some highly hyped, often confusing, cameos in live action trailers for video games.

Usually it's pretty harmless, but when Idris Elba shows up in a billowing black coat and his smoldering eyes, we're expecting a movie out of that. And is there any guarantee that if we buy this game, Idris is going to show up?? We didn't think so.

Regardless, it's fun to see some of our most glamorous celebs act out their action/fantasy movie dreams in these live-action ads, which have a history of coming out around the winter holiday season. We're not complaining. It's just too bad that actual video game movies never look as good as these short, action-packed trailers.

Congrats, you're officially out of touch with current pop culture.

Though admittedly the Broad City girls might be a little less well-known.

Yeah, they're the only ones since the rest are all insanely popular people. Nothing wrong with it, but I also find it a weird thing to brag about.

The Mariah Carey one gets me all the time.

The blind items published before the commercial's debut about the company foolishly giving full final image approval to Mariah is hilarious. She must be proud of the full 4 seconds of her photoshopped frame.

That Tomb Raider ad ir horrid.
COD ads are always a spectacle.

And yes, I would watch Idris Elba in anything.

I wonder how many games could've been made from the money spent on marketing these AAA blockbusters

nevermind, Idris Elba is probably worth it :p

Mariah Cary hastily turning and running with the sword with the serious and strenuous face was funny in a sad way, in the Game of War commercial.

I've seen some twitter ads for a mobile game called Mobile Strike that has Arnold Schwarzenegger in it.

There's also those Game of War ads with weird screaming MMA dude whose name I don't know.

Ugh. Having famous celebrities be prominent within video games was one of the major things that bugged me about the early PS2/Xbox days.

And seriously, has anyone ever bought a game because some movie star did a voice over or lent their face or whatever?

None of these actors are actually IN the game. Unless your trying to make a separate point..

Plenty of people become aware of it by virtue of name recognition. Celebrities increase mindshare, product awareness, and all the other marketing-related buzz words.

Seriously, it does matter.

The only ones listed I don't know are the Rise of the Tomb Raider people (never mind, I do, just not by name). Half of them I only know simply by like, existing and nothing else, so I'm not sure how people know so few of them.
