In Utah? Yeah, I don't really see why anyone would go to school there unless they're Mormon. I don't know what career path would have the best prospects there and make it worth being socially ostracized, but maybe I'm wrong and they have a kickass engineering program or something.
Dude I go to the University of Utah. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Sometimes I get real nostalgic and want to move back to be with my friends and family...

...then this shit...yeah, it's really fucking annoying I can't buy booze at Costco or at all if it's Sunday.

You can remember something that is still a thing.. just sayin.

I'm confused. Last time I was in SLC, not more than couple of years ago, I was allowed to drink without joining a club, but I was still not allowed two drinks at once. So I was replying to your response - assuming you meant membership.

How is it still a thing?

Its not. Private clubs are not allowed in Utah anymore.

Also the guy saying there is no reason to go to Utah for school unless you're mormon is fucking stupid. Might as well say there is no reason to go to Italy for vacation unless you're catholic.

Italy has a lot to offer besides the fucking churches. What's the appeal of going to school in Utah if you're not a part of the dominant religion there? Do they have amazing graduate programs the rest of the country doesn't have?

If you're into outdoors stuff like hiking or skiing, Utah is incredible. It's really underrated in term of how beautiful the state is; Probably right behind Colorado.

Seriously? You could say this about just about every state in the US. For the record, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, fitness in general, cheap cost of living/school, and booming tech industry are a few reasons one might want to go to school here.

I went to the University of Utah and there is very little, religiously, going on up there. I probably heard more from anti-Mormons than I heard from Mormons, but very, very little all around.

If you go 30 miles south to BYU, sure. That place has a lot of bullshit going on. But I think most of the people posting in this thread would be surprised to find that downtown SLC is probably very, very different than what they associate with when they hear "Utah".

if I ever visit America I'll just go to Utah to see the atmosphere of it, must be some eerie shit

University of Utah School of Medicine is nothing to brush aside. And if you like doing things outdoors, like, at all, there's plenty to offer. Yes, there are lot of backwards fucktards in the state, but if you live in Salt Lake proper, go to Park City and the resorts, there's plenty to offer. I'd go back to live in Utah no problem if it shook out that way, but it's not without its inconveniences. But what state doesn't have that?

California is cool as shit if you're a millionaire who doesn't mind crowds. Utah is cool as shit if you like the outdoors and can put up with retarded liquor laws and religious zealots. Pick your battles.

when your state is basically a theocracy.

That's absurd hyperbole.

You wouldn't be socially orstracized unless you went to BYU. You probably would barely be able to tell the difference between life at the University of Utah and life in most other colleges in the US.

That's absurd hyperbole.

Of course it's hyperbole, but there's a bit of truth there too. Rocky Anderson made the exact comparison.

90% of the state legislature is Mormon (vs 60% of the state as a whole.

There is no defense for the Zion curtain other than religious grounds.

And apropos to this topic the governor just signed that "masturbation is a public health crisis bill"

To be honest, visiting Utah should be on your list of things to do if you ever go to the states. Place is amazing for hiking, climibing, skiing, rafting, all sorts of ourdoorsy stuff. By then, hopefully they will have their act together and not have a secret police busting Brewvies for letting people drink with their movie though.

That's a ridiculous bill that I'm very much against. But, once again, you're arguing in bad faith. It's a "porn is a public health crisis" bill. It has nothing to do with masturbation.

Living in Utah is full of smack-your-head moments but it's not 100% terrible. Although, if I wasn't rooted here with wife and kids that have no desire to leave, I would get out in a heartbeat.

How does it take 3 separate undercover agents to confirm that the place served alcohol while showing Deadpool?

Hell you could've just called the place and I'm sure the manager would've told you as much.

Well they wanted physical confirmation, and why would you want to watch a movie alone? :)

Yeah I don't think anyone but hardcore Mormon's even live in Utah. I once heard that like 10% of the students at one of the colleges there are non-Mormon but I don't believe it. One day I'd like to visit to see Monument Valley and shit but that's it.

What the fuck is this shit I am reading right here.

BYU isn't the only college in Utah.

Plus if they only sent one he might have perverse or unclear thoughts after seeing that sex scene and having booze in his system. They had to have at least one more there to make sure he didn't do something stupid.

Modern languages.

Brigham Young has one of the best modern foreign language departments in the US, possibly in the world.

Man, I like Brewbies too. One of the few good options in SLC to get away from the Mormons.

Nah man.
I mean if you go look for it you can find some weird shit, but it's not something that will be overbearing when passing through, fuck, I'll bet that there's a good chance you wouldn't even notice it (depending on what you do and where you go of course).

And don't get me wrong, those laws are bullshit and they're part of the reason why I don't think I'll seriously consider living there, but if you're just visiting?
That's not a huge deal.

p.s.
As other people noted, if you do visit the US you absolutely need to go to Utah, it's amazingly gorgeous, seriously, it has some of the prettiest places I've ever been to, not only in the US but in the world.

That's to accomodate the Mormon missions and the need to proselytize in every single country.

It's also why their airport is international even though it's out in the the middle the desert.

If you just want to see Monument Valley, you don't have to spend much time inside Utah itself. Just fly into Phoenix or Albuquerque, drive towards Flagstaff and then through the Navajo Reservation towards Kayenta. The park itself extends into Arizona and Utah is operated by the Navajo Tribal government. Zion, a US National Park, is also along the southern border, just a bit further west and can also be accessed through Flagstaff or Las Vegas.

As for the University of Utah, it has a lot of notable firsts including being one of the original four nodes of ARPANET along with UCLA, Stanford, and UC Santa Barbara. The School of Medicine is the only medical school in the state and has been a big pioneer in bioinformatics, genetics, and Cardiovascular medicine. It was the first Cardiovascular disease institute west of the Mississippi and was the site of the first artificial heart implant. That's about as much as I remember from my interview days and can't speak for much else except that Park City is nice (or so I hear).

Everyone is just jealous.

Nice, respond to ignorance and intolerance with your own brand of ignorance.

Utah is not all mormon. The actual downtown city of SLC is mostly liberal and is known for having a very LGBT friendly community. There is a decent bar scene in SLC and the outdoor activities in Utah are amazing.

The University of Utah and BYU have a very heated sports rivalry specifically because BYU is known as the mormon school and UoU is known as the non-religious heathen school.

Also, Utah is usually in the top 3 most affordable states to go to college.

Some seriously misconceptions about living in Utah in this thread... not terribly surprising when these are the sorts of headlines that you typically see related to Utah, but I digress. I graduate college in just over a year and while I'm not keen on going right back to Utah, I definitely wouldn't hesitate to start a family there. Cost of living, family environment, the SLC valley (despite the inversion) is booming, and...

Everyone is just jealous.

Utah bros know what is up. I don't mind all the bad press if it keeps people from moving here. More natural splendor for the rest of us.
