Valve on the things coming to TF2, next update

Kind of funny the Pyro update from Meet your Match still hasn't come out. Wonder when the Heavy one will. Either way I still hop on TF2 every now and then so bring it on I say.

I don't get the gif? Is player count a measuring stick for quality? MAG on ps3 is the greatest of all time then.

One thing you may want to add to that summary ashecitism is that the Jungle theme will be used for a new Valve made map. I didn't include it when I made that summary because that thread is for hardcore TF2 fans and Valve had already announced they were making the map on the blog so everyone there was aware of it however many people reading this thread probably aren't aware of the map.

The next video that Valve News Network is going to post is the CSGO team talking about gambling, that video is going to be very interesting.

The port was never made by Valve directly though. That's why it never got any updates. Portal 2 was the only fully supported game they released.

Portal 2 wasn't even technically fully supported on consoles since as far as I know it never got community created level support/Steam workshop support like the PC version has.

It didn't get updates because Microsoft didn't want Valve updating the game for free.

That was part of the reason, though over the years in different interviews members of the TF2 team had said were other reasons the game never got updates on the 360. One was that the team post launch was never huge (usually around a dozen people, right now it's 16) so they didn't have the resources to port the updates to 360. TF2 has had almost 600 patches in the past 9 years and Valve has issues multiple updates in a single day before if something was found to be broken in an earlier update. That sort of updating is fundamentally incomparable with console updates. This freedom in updating games on Steam as much as they want is probably why we'll likely never see a Valve multiplayer game on consoles ever again. Even if the console makers do allow for free updates the certification time they would have to go through would make it impossible.

The other big reason was eventually they just stopped designing new content that would fit in the 360's RAM so the writing was basically on the wall at that point, since it would of required a ton of work to go back and make everything work in the limitations of the Xbox 360.

Compared to Overwatch, both CSGO and TF2 have quite a bit of polishing up to do.

Not saying Overwatch is a better product (I actually enjoy CSGO over all 3) but Valve could really sharpen up the game's ui/transitions/loading/visuals/bugs/usability/etc.

TF2 really REALLY needs some love from Valve.

Please Valve port TF2 to Source 2 engine. I think it's about time already and 10nth anniversary is good enough reason to do it.

I wouldn't hold my breath in expectation of them overhauling and redesigning large portions of 10 year old game on even older engine. Even port to Source 2 is very unlikely for old game like this. More likely to start all over with next Team Fortress project on Source 2.

A TF2 youtuber recently visited Valve and they asked about that. They were told porting TF2 to source 2 would be nice however there are only5 or 6 programmers on the TF2 team (the rest of the 16 people do other stuff) so it would take a huge amount of their time to port the game to Source 2.

One silver lining is that Gabe Newell said in his recent AMA that he wants all of their developers working on Source 2 eventually.

Which of course could just mean the end of TF2 support, particularly if they have to maintain the three VR games, most of which are very likely to be run as a "service."

The updates sound nice but I just want ad-hoc connections to Valve servers. That's the only way my gaming group will go back to TF2.

Does anyone know the context behind these round tables? Was it also a preview event for one of the new projects? I notice scant info on Dota 2 and CS:GO, the latter of which is waaaaaaaaaay overdue for a massive update.

Did they add a female playable character yet.

Or... any new playable character, really?

That game is such a joke now.

I loved TF2 for years but I feel like it lost its way, I tried to play it again the other month and after a few hours had to stop and leave it alone.

TF2 is from a time where characters being added was still not really a thing for MP games like this, and you could say that the weapons they added in are like remixes for each class in how they play, especially the spy who had 3 unique styles to playing him depending on what watch you equip.

Valve seems very committed to TF2 and are hoping to see it grow so I don't see them dropping support. The player base has remained pretty consistent over the past few years and it has a thriving economy.

These interviews seemed to happen a little after the Gabe Newell AMA and it seems like Valve just wanted to talk to the community and press. The end of this video says the next part, which should be up later today, is the CSGO team talking about gambling and their next big update.

Sometimes forget why some people are on my ignore list then you all quote him with a terrible opinion and I'm like ' that's probably why'. Thanks guys.

Why TF2 was never popular as an esport?

It's really not set up to be a competitive esport, and as a result, there's a lack of promotion to get it off the ground. It's all there if you want to play it, but it's never going to have the same level of success as the likes of CSGO or Overwatch.

The main two formats are 6s and Highlander (9v9). Proper 6s might as well be an entirely different game from regular old TF2, and Highlander, while fun, runs into the issue of getting 18 players together.

Wow, this game still getting support 10 years later. I haven't played in a few years but I'd consider dropping back in for this. Jungle themes are awesome.

TF2 is still the only FPS I've ever enjoyed. I'm not sure what it is about it; it just hits the right buttons somehow.

I like Overwatch for what it is but nothing can match the large server madness with 4 engies stockpiling the last checkpoint. TF2 is madness and a pub game heaven.

Yeah it wasn't really the competitive community's fault that comp TF2 was so different than normal TF2, they did the best they could with what they were given from Valve. Now that Valve is actively working towards making TF2 a competitive game I'm hoping to see a lot of positive changes in comp TF2.

I'm interested to see what they do for Pyro, but I don't think the problems with the class are really going to be fixed unless they completely overhaul it. The mess that is Pyro is the one blemish on an otherwise perfect game.

Console release when? Valve is missing massive money for not releasing it. I used to play a lot back then but now I'm focused on consoles and I really miss it.

TF2 sucks on consoles, Soldier, Scout, Demo, and Sniper are basically unplayable. One of the reasons Overwatch is so dumbed down in comparison is so it works on a gamepad.

Why TF2 was never popular as an esport?

Valve didn't care when the game was new. If TF2 came out today things might be different, but you aren't going to see many competitive players jumping to a 10-year old game, especially one that requires 800+ hours to be competitive at.

Watching the intro of this video, it seems it was about everything (Steam, VR, their current GaaS etc) it just the press probably covers what's most interesting to them in whatever order. Not sure they previewed new stuff though.

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
Lol who plays this when the superior Overwatch is out?
Heck even the other F2P Paladins is better than Team Fortress 2 also.

When Overwatch adds community support, more game modes, 16v16, etc. then maybe it will be on par with TF2 for me.

Hope they change the default network settings at one point. So many people that have played the game for years dont know the default settings in TF2 are awful and seriously hamper you.

Game just feels much better with a decent interp.

And add tutorials about some of the deeper mechanics like rocket jumping or at least a tip saying " LET GO OF W WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO AIRSTRAFE YOU FUCKS"

Yes one thing TF2 badly needs is a much, much better tutorial for all classes than the one it currently has. My suggestion I sent to the TF2 team was to but a tutorial for all classes and than give out a contract after the training for that class to reinforce that training on Valve servers.

This is why valve is a joke, he says 5 or 6 programmers like its so sad but those guys are way to busy to port it over. Well here's a thought Gabe take some those billions in your bank account that you seem to be spending on nothing and hire some fucking staff jackass. While your hiring why don't you hire some mangers so the jokers who are there have deadlines and risk of getting fired so something actually gets done. I used to love valve but I would like nothing better than for them to get acquired so some shit gets done. Nothing could be worse then the current valve ; the kings of microtransactions and sleazy back alley gambling.

Isnt overwatch a TF2 clone that is full of homophobes and people that spend more time watching the porn than they so playing it?

I would say you should put a helmet on to protect yourself after That statement but you'll probably be ok since the OP put team fortress in the title of the thread. That's like having a skunk tied to your front door and expecting visitors; the only people coming in here are those who thought it was a titanfall 2 thread.

Great news. Been meaning to get back into TF2. Been almost a year I imagine.
Has any other MP shooter changed this much from it's original state? And all for free.

Kids these days. Wouldn't know a good game if it bit them in the ass.

I played TF2 back when it wasn't free and despite it being easy to play on a basic level, there are too many items and hidden mechanics (especially regarding movement) for most people to turn to playing it competitive. I dropped the game after my friends dropped it and never really looked back.

Good for the fans that Valve is still supporting the game, but it's too much of a clusterfuck now. I feel like Overwatch restricting characters to specific weapons and moves makes the gap between casual and competitive much smaller and therefore more accessible. Nobody wants to grind to get an item (by RNG no less) that makes them better by default. Unlocking hats is one thing, but weapons is just silly from a competitive standpoint.

Highlander is stalemate central. 6v6 is waaay more fun to watch, which is why matches get way more views.

i know. thats why i feel it embodies the tf2 spirit more than any other mode.

have you ever played highlander 2fort? that is the most tf2 game i've ever played

The big problem with TF2 comp is that the game was never designed with competitive play in mind despite having a very high skill ceiling.

To be fair I think in a perfect world comp TF2 would be 12v12 (probably with class limits, maybe 2 per) and it would be played on a lot of different maps and modes. There are a lot of reasons that would never work in the real world which I'm sure I don't have to explain.

Highlander is probably closer to pub TF2 since they have a bigger weapon white list, every class is represented and more maps and modes are played. Highlander doesn't really work perfectly because it has too many players per team but it's certainly closer to "normal" TF2 than 6s.

6s of course has the issues of only have 4 of the 9 classes represented 95% of the time, many weapons banned and a very small map and mode pool. It's certainly not perfect but probably works better than highlander on a number of levels.

Or course now that Valve is going to work on comp TF2 they have a chance to change some design choices with both classes and modes to make the game work better than competitive. I think there's going to be a lot of growing pains and a lot of unhappy comp players, but hopefully when it's all said and done they're able to make the game work for everyone in the community.

I just want regular pubs back.

I poured hours upon hours in TF2, but once the competitive update hit it just lost me. I played TF2 to have fun and now that they've introduced this ranked feature and competitive 6v6 crap even in casual mode it just lost the magic. At least the community servers are alive and that's where I spent most time on, but yeah, this new focus just feels unnecessary.

Highlander and 6v6 have mostly the same weapon whitelist. Highlander bans 13 weapons and 6v6 20 items, with only minor differences like the Machina and Razorback being banned in Highlander and allowed in 6v6.

Highlander isn't really close to "normal" TF2 in the sense that the game clearly isn't balanced around having one of each class out at the same time (especially defensive classes).

The new casual system is garbage, yeah. Casual mode doesn't have 6v6 at all, though.

If anything, MYM shows how little focus Valve has on comp. The comp rollout was completely half-assed, with them ignoring everybody's feedback from the beta and populating it with maps nobody wants (like Swiftwater and fucking Turbine while removing classics like Snakewater and Badlands) and instead spending all their time making a major overhaul to pubs that nobody asked for.

Oh well, I didn't play much of the casual mode to really know what's up. And you just reminded me that they also removed Granary which was my favourite map. Well initially I fell out of TF2 due to community maps I frequented getting less traffic, which is when I would jump into pubs to have some fun. I don't know why they felt it was necessary to rework pubs like this, they just sucked all the fun out of the game.
