Any good books that focus on a Knight? I was listening to some audio lore from a Border Prince today on the Knights and they seem awesome. Especially the free blades.

Also, is there a good place to find good Knight designs? I have a couple houses I’d like to mirror when I make mine.

The newest Fantasy/Old World book: Lords of the Lance. Has a ton of knights in it!

People really up in arms over the reveal of female Custodes.

I don’t think the idea of female custodes is so much of a problem, lore wise. It’s entirely possible, and easy to roll in - unlike with Astartes.

But GW have done a terrible job of doing it. You can’t just state in a tweet that they’ve always been there - when there’s been absolutely no reference to them in three decades.

Also, this has dug up the fact that Blackrock and Vanguard are both big shareholders in GW. A lot of people didn’t know this.

GW have shit the bed with this reveal. A real pity. It could have been done so well. They should have listened to ADB when he was writing Master Of Mankind.

I'm not a lore master, but I read somewhere that custodes were always men. Some reference to them being selected from "sons"..

Anyway, this is the start and will end with female Space Marines. There are people and groups who are campaigning for this change and are the reason for GW going in this direction.

We all know this is only going to go one way as well. We're not going to see Brothers of Silence or Brothers of Battle.

Ask me about my terrible takes on Star Trek characters
I'm gonna start printing my army this week. I was thinking of:

Some state militia halberders, some state missile gunners, some demigryph knights to get started. Maybe a mage, but i can't find a good one for a mage on a gryphon

I don’t brothers of silence or brothers of battle. That would be dumb.

As for the custodes, not sure how I feel about it. Major kill did a video and it kind of changed my mind a bit. I’ll have to think on it.

It's not a lore breaker. The custodes are directly descended from the emperor and their creation is a somewhat different process from the Astartes. They could have just said due to the great rift opening that the Imperium have decided to take the daughters of nobles, as well as the sons. It's just the fact they've done it in such a lazy, ret-con manner that's the problem.

But female Astartes are probably coming, yes. If Primaris marines can exist, then they'll put together a lore justification for female space marines as well. I just hope they make a bit more of a fucking effort with how they do it... rather than just banging out a bloody tweet.

I actually like the idea of female Custodes. Like, a lot. But the day GW try to push female Space Marines, whatever their "lore justification" (I doubt they'd even bother with one to be honest), they can go fuck themselves.... not that I've touched a mini for the last 15 years anyway.

Lazy dlacktivism. Something as simple as “There have always been female custodians, but they are a very rare breed taken of noble houses who engage in military practices.”

Explains why a daughter would be chosen, that they have knowledge to warrant being chosen over a son, and explains why we have seen none until this point.

It's worrying that they haven't even tried to give a lore reason for the change. Lazy as shit, and doesn't bode well for the future.

Very concerning. What is worse are the hordes of mental cases trying to celebrate the chance just because it pisses some folks off, calling them misogynists, bigots, sexists, etc.

It is a bit out of step too for them. Lately, they have been going out of their way to be consistent with Lore. The heresy really forced that. I’d think the writers must be a bit torn on this too given how they could have easily done it through those books.

And that's why this change exists in the first place. Classic case of the tail wagging the dog.

Same reason why GW will introduce female Astartes. They need to appease the vocal minority. They'll now make sure there aren't any male only factions or forces moving forward.

Yeah i was boasting about how keeping the gate for 40k should have been a manual for gamers of sll fandoms, but turns out GW is in it's way to cuck themself faster than i anticipated.

So the old vote with your wallet is now on for GW products.

Just catching up on the latest furore over female Custodes. More female representation in 40K was inevitable and overdue. I’m not keen on the idea of retconning as if they’ve always been there. They’ve spent years building the lore, it’s just lazy. They should be introduced as a new change. It would be more reflective of the cultural and social shift we are actually facing.

Mark my words, you’ll start seeing space marine sprues with female marines in the next 5 years or female head options at the very least.

There was already plenty of female representation, one of the more popular and fan favorite factions is literally female only.

Make new named female characters in those armies, don’t just shoehorn it for narcissists who need to see themselves in an army for vain purposes of “representation”.

There’s always going to be a vocal minority that wants female Adeptus Astartes, but they’ll never actually support them by putting their hand in their pocket. The only way GW will make money from the change is forcing it on everyone.

It’s probably worth pointing out at this stage that GW has, and always has been, run by a bunch of old lefties.

Warhammer grew out of an Thatcherite culture in the 80s, that also saw 2000ad become hugely popular, and left wing comedy was extremely influential.

40k is a satire. Always has been. Largely about ultra conservative politics, religion, and monolithic institutions.

I know the temptation is to see this kind of stuff as only happening because the hobby has become infected by ’tourists’. But these kinds of progressive changes are absolutely things that the higher ups and creators at GW would champion.

Not sure about all of this. They have spoken about female custodes internally for some time apparently and the only thing that was stopping it was the higher ups.

Major Kill did a decent video on this.

Frankly, it all depends how they do it. And the way they are currently doing it is not good at all.

Majorkill thinks he knows a lot more than he actually does.

ADB made the point that he was only stopped from having female custodes because they'd already had the male heads produced in the factory. Which sounds like GW more than anything else. But the higher ups will be well behind female custodes if they think they'll sell. I guess we'll see.

And no, the way they are doing it is terrible. Feels more like a poor comms issue to me though, than senior management. Get your messaging about the lore straight and then make your changes. Just alienating people otherwise.

It’s true , this could have been an opportunity rather than an issue. It’s a shame.

Side not, I just started the 5th seige of Terra audio book yesterday and my god is it depressing. It’s really well done.

As an 80's-era leftie myself, I love me some Sarah Connors, Ellen Ripleys and Deunan Knutes.

It would have been cool at least if GW had different/interesting sculpts for the femstodes - or anything else.

But they won't. They'll just sell a sprue of some ugly heads to add to the existing man bodies. Which basically means it makes no difference at all.

Edit: Not to diminish the concerns from fans of the lore ofc. I'm not really in that camp so I can't say much either way - I just like to paint my little plastic doods. But I can see how someone who spent a lot of time supporting and digging into the fandom would be annoyed if they just randomly change things for no real reason.

The thing is, we have plenty of those types of character. Celestine, Severina Raine, Bree Jagdea, Anurhada, Lotara Serrin, Shadowsun, Jain Zar, Amberley Vail, Regina Kasteen, etc.

Assasinorum: Kingmaker is a book that is entirely set on a Knight world and covers the politics involved and of course big stompy knights. Absolutely fantastic book that made be buy another knight once I had finished reading it :D

Regarding the other 'big issue' of the day on female Custodes: what took them so long? Unlike Space Marines, they have never written themselves into a corner regarding the creation of them, Custodes do not "have to be" men and are created in a very different process. Find it funny when tourists show up from the woodworks getting their knickers in a twist over a girl in golden armour. Actually that's not fair towards tourists, as they are usually there to have fun, while the "anti fsm" Grognards that have latched onto this subject seems to revel in negativity. I don't know how someone can get so angry over the gender of a toy soldier. I welcome our golden girls and started building a Custodes jumping at some male space marine and chopping his silly head off:

IMG20240418230735.jpg

Currently looking for a suitable head, luckily there's now a wealth of 3rd party bits available that are Stormcast-scale to consider.

Also, space marines are just one successful experiment by Cawl or Bile away from getting more than 1 gender :p

I appreciate the book recommendation. I’ll check it out.

I only kind of agree. I also think comparing them to space marines isn’t the same. For the custodes there are loads of references to it being only men. It was the sons on high born houses and it’s even called a brotherhood. Sure, could there have been and will be females, maybe. But gw shouldn’t just act like it’s always been that way. It simply hasn’t. As for the space marines, that would actually be logical too, it would be something just shoe horned in.

I’d also argue that entirely gender specific armies fits the universe. The entire stratification of the system and rigid separation of groups would encourage this.

Give it a rest with the 'tourist' stuff, mate. When either side of this kind of debate starts throwing that term around it's incredibly annoying. People don't have to have been fans for years to have a valid opinion. It's the worst kind of gatekeeping. I first got into Warhammer during 3rd edition. Does that make my opinion worth more than someone who only started up with 8th? No. It's plastic toy soldiers and bolter porn.

It's perfectly okay to feel that GW have done a bad job of integrating what is a big change to the lore. It's also okay to be fine with it.

What's not okay is the persistent point scoring done by people who care more about their bullshit politics than they do the game/lore.

The "tourist" was meant to be ironic, I guess these days everything needs to be tagged with a "/s" it the end otherwise it's taken too seriously? Yeah sure tone doesn't get across well in text, but I figured the rest of my comment should make it clear that I don't particularly care or mind? Anyway, this whole thing will blow over and no one will care in a week or two when the next big pre-order wave of something comes out.

There aren't many references of Custodes being only men, there is just a section in the 8th edition codex that 'it is known' that custodes start out as boys of noble families and at much younger age than space marines. Unlike space marines with the whole 20-point plan of implanting geneseed - which must be men because the primarchs were all men because the Emperor wanted it this way - the process of creating custodes was never explained. Other than it being very specific to the individual in question using ancient technology, while space marines (and thunder warriors before them) were mass production-supersoldiers to take over the galaxy.

Acting as if it's always been this way is how GW always handles lore in 40k. Recent examples: the Rogal Dorn tank? Always been there. What, you've never seen that before and it was never once mentioned in the hundreds of novels? Doesn't matter, now please buy our battleforce box with two of them in it. The Votann? Always been there since the dark age of technology. Even things that have been seemingly cast in iron in the lore just get changed whenever they feel it's right (to potentially sell more models). Such as in the Horus Heresy
Don't read if you haven't read the end and the death part 3, you have been warned!

Horus has always been considered completely destroyed by the Emperor after the final battle over Terra, until he wasn't. In the end and the death volume 3 Horus gets killed, sure, but his body is still there and not only that, seemingly Abaddon gets hold of it - not sure what he does with it though.
Of course might have been nice if that would have been set up a bit better, sure. But based on what I read and heard in interviews with former GW staff, that's just how that company seems to run - selling miniatures comes first and they worry about the lore at the very end with the pages free after all the unit profiles have been put in place ;)

There are well more references than that but I see your point. It’s also doesn’t excuse it. The tank thing was dumb too but as it’s not a character it’s not the same. The Votaan was actually explained and it was far better done.

I also wouldn’t use the unreliable narrator angle as a way to justify this as there hasn’t any reference.

It doesn’t invalidate your viewpoint as it’s fine to have yours, I just think their handling of it has been terrible. Am I upset about the actual change? Not really as a female custodes makes some level of sense as the emperor wanted the best and took them as infants so the size and strength differences of the genders wouldn’t even be an issue and easily overcome.

I’d also be ok with female space marines if they did the “new science” bit (but even that is dodgey as it would heavily frowned upon to monkey with the emperor’s work that much) but given how they just did primaris I don’t see that happening for a while. Hopefully never.

And, they better not screw up my nuns with guns or the sisters of silence! Those factions are essentially perfect and have amazing lore that should be messsed it.

Nope. If we having female Custodes and female space marines (that'll be the next edition) then we'll also have Brothers of Silence and Brothers of Battle.

And thinking about this recently, why the hell not? Why not have every single faction gender mixed? At the end of the day, it's just a fantasy wargame. The lore has changed a number of times and can change to fit whatever GW want.

Nah. You're both wrong. Brothers in Battles would be like bad-ass warrior monks. Who doesn't want that?

Another interesting thought about mixing the genders of all factions is that they'll then be able to reproduce more quickly.

Lets say we get female space marines. A female Smurf bangs a man Smurf, get's pregnant and boom. Natural space marine reproduction! Although, this is 40K, so perhaps the male marines could carry the fetus in an artificial womb (Think the Bridge Baby in Death Stranding) and also carry them to battle! Imagine how bad ass that would look as a model. Maybe that's they way they could bring back the Emperor as well.

I'm not joking either. 100% serious post. That would be metal AF and you know it.

I know quite a lot. I've read a lot of the books, played a lot of the games and listen to the Adeptus Ridiculous podcast.

Checkmate.
I kind of like Adeptus too. They had a weird bug on Apple Podcasts that really made me miss a bunch. I need to get caught up on them.

I recommend a border prince and the drop pod. Both are pretty great. You also need to listen to Laying Down the Lore too. It is utterly fantastic.
