I also agree about the sigs. Im glad this place doesn't have sigs and huge avatars. The theme/layout of this forum is great.

And I don't see the problem with search? I like the google search part of this forum

I think SA is kind of the exception to the rule. Other forums I have seen that have gotten popular and switched to a pay subscription model generally tend to fizzle out and die off.

I recently went to a car forum I used to frequent about a year ago that had switched to pay model and there were like 3 new posts in the last week, as opposed to 5+ pages of new posts a day like in the old days.

The internet is a fickle lot.

These things are the reason WHY I like GAF. It doesn't have any of those shitty, gaudy, tearing inducing sigs that you find on other forums. GAF has a very simple and effective aesthetic. I'd hate to see it change.

I don't think it's that bad an idea. GAF has become like the one place I go to for news and discussion. Paying a one-time $10 fee to keep out the rifraff and give me extra functions isn't that much to ask for something I use everyday.

The mods come down hard, sure, on the asshattery that they actually feel is asshattery. It sometimes seems to be subjective.

So you're complaining that you can't ban people you don't like?

:lol

You'd expect pay-to-post forums to have less garbage, more information.

But actually you get worse traffic, because people who are crazy enough to pay are unfunny nerds with no common sense who take everything way too serious.

Considering how much I read gaf $10 is pocket change. If you didn't want to do a $10 mandatory sign up fee you could always just flag some accounts as donators. I wouldn't want my money going to charity though it'd have to be towards the server or managers.

Just read some of the rules on SA ( never did this before). With things like, auto-bans. I find it hard to even consider registering. And that's not even considering the fact that you might lose 10 dollars on an account because an admin/mod was having a bad day.

I wouldn't mind paying a tenner for a GAF account though. So yeah. GAF is the shit forever.

All joking about GAF Gold aside, I think a small one-time fee for certain aesthetic benefits like slightly bigger avatar tolerances and internal search function wouldn't be a bad idea. The goal would be to provide some additional amenities that doesn't infringe on other users' posting experience. Bigger PM inboxes, customizable themes, and additional posts-per-page counts are other examples.

Buying an account at SA is the best 10 bucks I ever spent. I've never known a forum so rational and airtight in it's moderation.

Bad news, guys. Even if a limited number of people use vb's search, the mere fact that it's enabled and indexing posts causes resource drain.

I usually go the site:neogaf.com -> search whatever- route on google. I'm surprised more people aren't aware.

Seeing how I'm 99% of the time on GAF, hell I leave about 4 or 5 tabs open at all times, and their all from GAF, if a GAF Gold account existed I would pay... I love this place..

That's what the search box does now. Going through Google has it's uses, but the built-in VB search is definitely very useful and superior in some ways.

It's nice to be able to check someone's past posts, for example, or check your own posts to easily find the threads you posted in but did not subscribe to.

It is also very handy to be able to specify whether you want to search terms in a thread's title or the actual posts within a thread.

There are many nice things about VB search and it's a shame that the feature is no longer enabled, but if disabling it cuts down on bandwidth usage and helps reduce errors and bottlenecks then it's probably for the best.

That's useful but doesn't enable me to check if there's new replies to threads I've posted in. Even when search was up I pretty much used google to find threads but I really miss "Find all posts by"

Hell, the threads started by was also great for a ton of laughs.

There's this option where you automatically subscribe to every thread you post in. I would recommend that. It's a good alternative to searching your post history.

SA-Mart is worth the 10 dollars alone. So much stuff I bought and sold over there. The forums are hit or miss though. I prefer gaming-age here.

Right. GAF does a lot of things right with it's forum management. I HATE how there's only one giant topic for a single subject that forces you to wade through a bunch of garbage just to get to pertinent information.

Something Awful was worth $10 because it's a great forum with a great community. I don't think any other board would be, and I definitely wouldn't pay a monthly fee for even SA.

Pffft. You peasants and your GAF Gold. Platinum up in this bitch.

- No 500 errors
- Ban immunity
- Custom tags
- Avatars over 90x120 pixels
- Access to mod's section

Life is great.

How about allowing people to pay to get their account activated sooner. :lol

Or maybe people can pay to get out of a ban sooner.
:lol

Or maybe....

Whoa so its not even enabled for mods? Damn

I'd pay for no ads (with a sub, if necessary), search, a mobile app/sub-site, and I'd definitely pay to get rid of 500 errors and the occasionally closedown of the OT. I know the admins have their reasons *shrug* someday, hopefully, GAF should have enough resources to take it to the next level.

The SA model is fine if you can pull it off. Those of you decrying SA aren't aware of some of the major benefits, like a heavily enforced Buy/Sell forum, or discussion forums where actual rigorous debate and discussion (including references) can occur without (much) fear of the kind of idiocy which tends to creep into OT threads (although that does give rise to more advanced idiocy at SA). GAF could probably pull off something like SA and in much the same manner, where everyone currently registered is brought in for free and it's pay from there out.

I'd be hard pressed to pay a monthly fee, though.

I paid for pretty much all the services you can over at SA and I've been happy with it. As much time as I spend reading GAF and SA I have no problem spending a little money to help pay for maintenance costs. The vast majority of people who get banned at SA could've avoided it if they had spent five minutes reading the rules. Typically you don't even get banned only probation so I don't feel too sorry for those who get banned and have to pay $10 to restore their account.

Requiring money doesn't help against trolls though, I would think the approval system used here would be far more of a deterrent.

Gotta say GAF has actually been pretty good lately, only had one 500 error so far during E3. Although I have seen an increase in 503 errors, whatever the hell those are.

The best part about SA is, you can't get away with replies like "lol" or "haha :lol " in serious threads.
Even though i have to stop myself sometimes because of all the funny shit people say over there.
Think how many less errors Gaf would have if it wasn't for all the people spamming the EXACT same thing during E3. Typing word for word what is going on during a conference that everyone is already watching anyway.
sounds like shit. people pay $10 for that? :lol :lol :lol

While it's true than D&D is a consistently high quality forum, the existence of LF as a "pressure release" for D&D threads has done much more to keep the quality of posts up than the entrance fee has.

Flash-back to, say, 2002-2003 and D&D was of a very high quality like you describe but there were much more troll posts and idiots.

Also while the grandfathering thing worked for SA, SA had relatively few accounts grandfathered in. I've had an account there for, uh, I guess ten years this month, and the forums there have been much larger since 2004-2005 than they were when the fee was brought in.

Sometimes I wish Gaf was like SA. But I have an SA account so whenever I need to go do some serious posting I just go there.

But If OT was anything like GBS I bet half of the people that post here would already be on probation, banned, or even perma-banned. :lol
:lol :lol :lol crazy!

sometimes i think "wow GAF has really strict moderation" and you mean to say it's even stricter there AND costs $10?

I don't dislike the concept of "Pay to post" forums. Putting a monetary barrier to entry is a great way to keep out a lot of asshats. It's a two way street though, since you also have a chance of alienating great posters who just can't pay using conventional methods for whatever reason (out of the U.S., don't like to post CCard info online, etc).

I can't say I'd be cool with paying for things like animated sigs or avatars and whatnot. I much prefer Gaf's barebones approach. I thought it was restrictive at first, but I rather enjoy the 90x120 limit. No need to clutter things up.
and great posters who think it's ridiculous to pay a fee to register for a forum so they pass...

Hmm must not be the site I am thinking of. All I remember was looking at a list of top boards from big boards site and clicking on something with awful in it and being redirecting to the Florida police website. They must have upset someone. :lol
