Thursdayton definately.

But wasn't Tuesdayton the REAL "ton", if I remember correctly?

Oh, and even though I wat at IGN at the time, MEGATON was pretty funny.

I'm pretty sure it was DC going third party. This place was very into DC during the time. Most hated PS2 and lots of jaggy compare shots vs dc games. After the news of DC being dropped it was a waste land. Lot of dreams crushed, no one knowing what was going to happen. PS2 people feeling happy. Nothing can top Sega dropping out of the friggin Hardware business. Wow at mentions of wii name and 600 ps3 >.>

DC cancellation was the biggest. Followed by the "Celda" unveiling. That's when some really hardcore Nintendo fanboys went apeshit. Swore off Nintendo, etc. Watching the flip-flops of some long-time posters over Nintendo and Wind Waker over the years (from "OMG Nintendo really is the kiddy, I hate Nintendo, this is the last straw where's my new Xbox jacket" to "oh I always loved the cel-shaded look, I was a fan of it from the beginning, truly mature gamers are not bothered by playing games like Wind Waker") has been one of the most amusing things on GAF.

Ah, I got one and I think it may top even the Dreamcast dying, though this is really more a series of seemingly interminable meltdown that still continues to this day and that would be PSP vs. DS. I will also grant that this phenomenon has toned itself down as I recall last year this place was littered with overzealous screeds of brand loyalty that reached such acrid volume that the leadership around here finally had to step in and nullify the hate under pain of ban so that everythign could cool off fo a while.

I've been lurking here long before I registered and one that stands out was the whole Nintendogs perfect ten thread.

I remember a once mod inserting nintendogs into every front page thread title. :lol

Hmm, can someone summarize this Thursdayton and Megaton. I didn't know they were specific things (to start with at least).

Dreamcast -> Celda -> Dragon Quest IX -> Thursdayton/Megaton.

It's aways funny to see notable posters completely flip out and let their true colors show. I'm still chuckling from DQIX for example.

Bonus mention to Sony screwing up the PS3 hype for about a year now. But it isn't a singular event so it doesn't count.

What was the original Thursdayton?

It was during E3 week of 2005. Aside from the big 360 news conference, it was a real DUD for big news. So, Drinky Crow innocently posted two words. Thursdayton - Believe. What happened next was 30 pages of speculation and bullshit rumors (focusing on Nintendo's console and what they may announce). The thread was even passed off on some news sites. So, in 2 days it had 30 pages and about 100,000 views. Pretty epic at that time.

So, it was merely an exercise to show how naive and gulliable Nintendo fans were and it worked spectacularly.

IIRC, Jump printed that a MEGATON was coming to the GCN and everyone thought it was FFVII or something equally as big.

It turned out to be Naruto.

Yeah, E3 2005 was great.

To be honest, though, a LOT of places were giving vague "hints" that there'd be some big stuff revealed. All the gunpowder was gathered, and drinky's post was the spark that set off the explosion. :lol

I remember that spreading to various corners of the internet, I thought it was an IGN creation at the time.

That was Mike Works, and it was pretty much his own meltdown. He wasn't a moderator anymore soon after that stunt. Too bad, I liked his style :)

The great GaimeGuy meltdown of 2007 was also pretty good.

The Aussie GAF Hack was also pretty funny. Literal forum meltdown.

I think a better question is what was the all-time greatest GAF crow-eating thread?

I know have the image of Drinky Crow beign force fed his beloved PSP by various and shadowy DS owners, really a prefect metaphor for what ended up happening.

Oh sh*t, I remember that from various other sites!! So that was all started by Drinky?! Goes to show that GAF really does run the Internet for gaming news...

I haven't been around for a long time, but the ones that stick out in my mind are the Dragon Quest IX announcement and Snake in Smash Bros. Brawl. Oh, and the February NPD of course.

There have been far too many forum wide meltdowns to choose a winner. But as far as individuals go, Doom_Bringers yaoi porn thread is the winner.

Okay, what about forumer metdowns, we have had some good ones in recent times, the likes of Doom_Bringer, Johnnyram, Amirox(who comes to mind many, many times) and Brimstone come to mind, but what was the biggest one of those types of meltdowns?

I had just started lurking/posting beginning of last year and that run into E3 culminating in the $599/Enemy crabs for massive damage press conference and the Snake in SSB: Brawl madness cemented my love for the complete fanaticism that is GAF.

DC's death was probably the biggest, though I've only seen bits and pieces of it (Didn't start lurking until early 2002).

RE4 to PS2 was pretty big also.

Biggest: Probably $599. If people think Celda drove people away from Nintendo, $599 US dollars was the ultimate conversion. Within 2 hours, Sony went from arrogant, triumphant leader that was unstoppable to ultimate 3rd place loser. Not only did they steal waggle 5 minutes earlier, legitimizing all complaints of theft by Nintendo and their loyal fans for the last 10 years (Dual Shock) but then gave a vicious **** you to all customers. Only a few, brave souls could spin it any other way (WHAT DID YOU THINK IT WAS GONNA COST?). It was like a light switch. Thoughts went from total domination and 100 million units to a hopeful claim that they'll sell the first 5 million instantly. It was a pretty dramatic swing. Going from the clear favorite to merely having to repeat that they'll sellout. Was that even a concern before E3? Hell no! Now look at Sony; we are wondering when 3rd party support will completely bottom out. Celda had nothing on this reaction. Plenty of nintendo fans had already turned in their jacket and plenty of people who loved gameplay accepted the change. After $599, a good portion of the talk focused on how people couldn't afford it, no matter what. Nor would they try. I can try for 399 but it'll have to be compelling. 299 is a little closer but I still have to bargain with myself. $599? Hell naw. **** em.

My favorite: TP first unveiling. E3 '04. Wow, sweet rapture. It took long enough but Zelda's TP unveiling was pure joy for a Zelda fan. I was on Direct Connect GAF board, and I just banged on the keys for approx 3 minutes of jibberish. I still remember someone calming us down, as if he could hear the roar of our virtual ecstasy.

DQ9 was fun but I've never played it. So, it was more of a passing amusement. Also, fun to hear Amirox be shouted down after veteran DQ players combated his hatred with the facts that DQ has always had lesser graphics.

Snake in Brawl was fun, from a retrospective angle. I caught that a day late. All those combined put me in my seat on NPD Thursdays. Woot.

Was I the only one who thought this thread was about forum posters and not events when I read the title?

I was gonna mention one, but I guess it would be faux pas now..

The Wii press conferences in the U.S./Tokyo/Paris (or somewhere in Europe) was epic. Because the events spanned such a long time period and new information was passed along at each conference, it made for a hell of a long thread constantly updated with minitons. I think I pulled an all nighter and skipped classes the next day just to keep up.

Wish I had been here for the Wii remote unveiling~

No, go on, this thread is currently lacking in individual meltdowns.

The Wiimote unveiling.

Some poster concisely summed up the astonishment with, 'What. What is that.'

(Or did he say something else--I forget")

I believe even the name is banned now, but here's a hint:

holy crap, I'd forgotten half of the posters in there...memories!

I can't wait until the hype can finally diminish. That will happen with the PS2 launch. The people who say it blows the DC away graphically (I'm not even talking about the people in this forum, just general mainstreamers) will finally be able to compare the systems. I am very confident that once people look at the better DC games, and compare them to the better PS2 games... The DC will impress more. We will probably hear "OMG! This doesn't look better than the DC and it costs twice as much!! Crap!"

Obviously the hype can not be used nearly as much now that it's here. We can compare and see the real truth of the matter. The PS2 does not blow the DC away and infact looks inferior in some ways. Woo hoo!! Bring on the PS2 I can't wait until a friend gets a PS2 and I can bring over my DC. He'll get out Tekken, I will get out Soul Calibur He might have RR5, then I can show F355. He'll show Madden 2001, I will show NFL 2K1 and hook it up for online play. He'll show NBA Live 2001 and I will show NBA 2K1 and well.. hook it up for online play He can bring out Unreal Tournament, and I can bring out Q3A with well... online play. Then the realization can come that the DC not only holds up well to the PS2 but is actually better in some ways!

But don't get all whiny on me now Sony fans, I'm well aware that the PS2 will hold the mainstream market and sell a lot of systems. The thing is, that now when we get people saying that crap about the PS2 being so much better looking, blah blah. We can actually compare stuff on each system, heh. And then yep.. The DC can speak for itself and they can just stop all the BS claims about the PS2.
:lol :lol :lol :lol good times
