We travel to 11 years ago. The PS3 and Wii launched that year, but the PS2 was still getting a lot of releases. Xbox was pretty much done, as was the GC minus the Zelda release. The DS and PSP were the major handheld items.

I got most of the higher rated games. Unlisted stuff starts here. Have a nice trip down memory lane.

How do you leave Wii Sports off of this list?

That and Twlight Princess for me.

And Hitman Blood Money but I only played that many years later.

You also forgot Baten Kaitos Origins. And Odama. And Excite Truck. And Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. And Red Steel. And WarioWare: Smooth Moves.

AND MOTHER 3!

Wow. I only ever played two games on that list. Madden and LEGO Star Wars. Ridiculous.

Finishing up college and starting my first job around that timeframe; that was a light-ish year for gaming. Only really played some backlog GC and PC stuff that year iirc.

EDIT: Damn yeah, Wii Sports missing??? Obviously played that one. But not until 2008 or so when I got a Wii.

Has no PEINS
Just looked at my list and it went:

1. Final Fantasy XII
2. Bully
3. Okami
4. Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins
5. Gunpey (PSP)
6. Mega Man Powered Up
7. Kingdom Hearts II
8. Tekken: Dark Resurrection

Great year. Surprised that KH2 was so low on my list... Interestingly enough, both FFXII and KH2 are getting remasters this year so I'll get to see if my preferences have changed at all

Edit: Not sure why I didn't put Guitar Hero 2 and Killzone Liberation on my list... Odd... I remember both of those games being great

Rainbow Six Vegas was the first console shooter that I really fell in love with. I must have dumped at least 300 hours into that game, both the competitive multiplayer and terrorist hunt were brilliant, and it completely shaped the way I thought about playing games online to this day. Once I get my gaming PC built I can't wait to jump into Siege.

You know, 2006 really was a damn good year.

1. Okami
2. Elite Beat Agents
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
4. WarioWare: Smooth Moves
5. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
6. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (2006 in Japan, so it counts)
7. Sonic Riders (maybe not the best game around, but I have a ton of nostalgia for it and still think it's pretty fun)

I wouldn't hesitate in putting that top 5 in my top of all time list, and Wii Sports was REALLY revolutionary at the time. I only played a bit of FFXII and am waiting for the PS4 remaster to play it all the way through, so I'll see how it ranks compared to the rest soon. I'd like to play Baten Kaitos Origins at some point too.

Even though it came out in 2005, I played it in 06, so I love Animal Crossing: Wild World as well. Ahhh, I have such amazing memories with that game.

This was a huge year for me. The biggest game for me was the Japan-only game Orbital (GBA), part of the Bit Generations line. I love the simplicity, atmosphere, and fun gameplay.

What a year.

Sam & Max: Season One and Okami are my favourites.

Other highlights for me in no order:

Kingdom Hearts II
LEGO Star Wars II
Yakuza
Viva Piñata
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Yoshi's Island DS
Electroplankton

Twilight Princess no contest. The game that introduced me to Zelda. The game that made me realise what I'd been missing by never owning a Nintendo console before. So good. First impressions admittedly weren't great as the opening was kind of a bore, but once it got going oh man was it great.

The only titles I played back then on that list are the old DS Final Fantasy and Twilight Princess. So Zelda I guess.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It didn't quite live up to my expectations, but it's still really great. There also weren't a ton of games that year that I was really into, and of those select few, it was the best.

Runners-up:
Gears of War
Hitman: Blood Money
Okami
Wii Sports

2006 has got to be one of the weakest years for video games in history.

That said, Company of Heroes, Gears of War, and Bully are all great games.

I convinced two people who'd never gone all in on a Zelda game before to try TP, the opening almost broke them but they came out loving it in the end.

Pure, concentrated fun (please come to BC !)

Dead Rising gets credits for originality though.

Awful year outside of Wii Sports.

So Wii Sports. At that time I would've probably said Twilight Princess but I'd still be in denial. The first few hours of TES Oblivion too, but that game ran out of steam so fast.

Scary thing but I barely played any single player games at that time

it was all about CS, DoD, Navyfield and online Battletech (megamek.net).

IIRC I only returned to single player games at end of 2007 to get rid of online gaming addiction.

Dark Messiah was released in 2006 but I didn't play it until 2011. In retrospect, I probably like the game more than anything else released that year. Super tight gameplay (combat is what Oblivion should have been in the first place, and what Skyrim could still not nearly touch even 5 years later and with Bethesda even buying out the devs) and level design, along with visuals that have aged very gracefully compared to contemporary titles (as seems to be consistent with Source engine games)

Bully - one of my all time favourites.

Hard to see it happening with the success of RDR and GTA but damn I'd love to see another Bully game.

That said this is a really strong list of games. There are a ton of great titles on that list. Shout outs to Gears of War, Oblivion, Civ4 and FF XII specifically.

Kingdom Hearts 2 for me. I was so hyped for it. First game I bought and preordered online. And then it was in my mailbox three or four days later while everybody I was communicating in a Kingdom Hearts Fan Forum already played it. Couldn't sit still in school because I wanted to go home to play it, too.
