Must admit I'm really curious about Brandish. I've loved every Nihon Falcom game I've played and since we did Elminage last year I've been getting more into dungeon crawlers. So a Falcom take on the genre is definitely something I'm interested in :).

Falcom's actually released two different flavors of dungeon-crawler over the years: Brandish, and DInosaur. They're both pretty outstanding.

...Technically, you could say the Zwei games are dungeon-crawlers as well, to an extent. Which is yet a third flavor in their delicious symphony. ;)

It's a genre they do very well!

It's pretty amazing that in a span of a year, just about every Vita game has been localised and brought over.

Nice work Xseed, I'll be buying everything along with Brandish. Tom's recommendation and passion of the game makes it seem interesting enough for me to buy and try it out.

Also I hope you look into bringing IA/VT over to the west, it seems that rhythm games do decently on the Vita and more rhythm games couldn't hurt.

Any chance to port games to the PC in the future such as Disgaea 3+4, Star Ocean 3, Toukiden, Demon Gaze, Drakengard, Unchained Blades, Soul Sacrifice, Durango?

Port begging, and for some games that aren't even third party, this a new low.

Cool. I've only played TitS and a bunch of the Ys games so I'll have to look into them.

I think out of all the games here, I am most inclined to try out Brandish, next will be Harvest Moon with a new name.

We have discussed the possibility, and I know both Brittany and I would be *so* down for it. Probably not likely to happen anytime soon, but... hey, you never know what the future may hold!
Sounds great, as long as there is an interest from fans and localizers it's good. I think a bunch of fans were trying to fan-translate it a bunch of years ago but I have no idea how that went. Guess they stopped now that Xseed handles LOH.

Also I just realized from your gaf name now that you're the same guy I think...) I asked a bunch of Ys and LOH questions ten years ago in a forum focused on Falcom game series (mainly Ys and LOH). God I feel so old :/

I have one question, hope it wasn't already asked.

With games like Rune Factory 4 and Unchained blades (and whatever else I might be missing), games that were released by you in NA but not in Europe, is a digital only, european version that dumps the game as it is (I mean no further translations just what it needs to get approved for classification) something actually possible?

You answer will probably be that I have to ask Marvelous for Rune Factory. What about Unchained Blades, though? IIRC you weren't that happy with its sales, thus skipping the sequel, but is a European release completely out of the question?

How is it port begging when I am asking idiot?

Take your console-war-toys and play with them in the beach.

Asking if they can port games that don't exist on that platform and most likely won't exist on that platform is the definition of port-begging, to be fair.

Yo wyrdwad, any chance XSEED can get Samurai Jam released in the US?

Might want to reword this post of yours to avoid a ban mate ^^;

Erm, even ignoring the fact that only one of those games you listed was released by us in the first place, bear in mind also that we don't have any programmers at our disposal aside from Sara -- so the only way to port those games to PC would be if the original Japanese developers ported them, or if we licensed the source code from one of those developers (which is hard to do to begin with; we only get Falcom source code because they trust us due to our now-longstanding partnership!) and convinced Sara to do it (bearing in mind that she's only ever worked on PC games and never done porting before).

So... the answer is pretty much just no, there is no chance of that, I'm afraid. Sorry!

Thanks for your response. Great information.

One more question - because I have been seeing quite allot of effort from different companies this year of importing more games to the West do you think there would ever be a chance of different companies partnering/collaborating for specific titles? Also if you got the "OK" from a company to import a game but for financial reasons you are not able to deliver, would you consider using Kickstart? And is it legit?

They went over it a while back that they will never use Kickstarter. (http://www.wired.com/2012/02/kickstarter-blindside/all/) Just ctrl+F "XSEED" and read from there.

Well, Senran got my attention and I'll definitely play it at E3. Akiba's trip is interesting haha. Kinda curious about Brandish. Is it similiar to Wizadry?

Still more interested in SC though. Can't ever have enough TiTs. Been waiting to add those to my wish list for so long.

Good job bringing all these niche titles over XSEED. I'm planning to get TitS:SC, AKBS2 and SenranVS for 2014.

That was most likely me, yes. ;)

Cool. I've only played TitS and a bunch of the Ys games so I'll have to look into them.

Come to think of it, Falcom's first two runaway successes in Japan, Dragon Slayer and Xanadu, were dungeon-crawlers as well. It's in their BLOOD, yo! ;)

Sadly, the developer for Rune Factory is now defunct, so I'm pretty sure that one is completely out of the question at this point.

As for Unchained Blades, that is also a no, I'm afraid, for reasons I'm not really at liberty to go into. Sorry I can't be more specific!

As others have noted, we've already said we won't be working on this one, but just to give you an idea why (and note that this isn't an official explanation, but just my own take on it from having played the game for several hours as a fan):

The game itself is fantastic, but it's only about 10% rhythm game, 90% visual novel. The sheer amount of text in it (not to mention voice, should the Japanese voices not be licensable) is actually kind of staggering (I wouldn't be surprised if it approached Trails in the Sky levels). In addition, the way the text is written on the screen would make localization really difficult, as it's all vertically-oriented in custom-sized long, thin text boxes squeezed between character portraits. In order to display it in English, the text boxes would need to be reoriented to display horizontally, which would involve moving all the character portraits, and this would pretty much have to be done individually for every single screen of text in the entire game.

And then once all of that had been cut through, the game would be released and people would buy it under the assumption that it's a rhythm game only to find themselves playing a really kickass visual novel... with occasional rhythm game interludes.

On PSP.

So yeah, it's one of those games that I highly recommend people play if they can read Japanese, as it truly is engaging -- but localization-wise, I think it would simply kill us. Straight up. ;)

Kinda curious about Brandish. Is it similiar to Wizadry?

Kind of. It definitely plays a little bit like a first-person dungeon crawler, except in third-person, and with action-oriented combat (not turn-based).

It's pretty unique, to the point where I think your best bet would be to watch Falcom's trailer -- I think that does a great job of showing off what the game is all about:

AKIBA’S TRIP: Undead & Undressed

Is that like Kenka Bancho Badass Rumble?

Sort of, but with more stripping. ;) And more of an otaku/nerd spin than a yanki/punk spin.

I described it in detail here, so check it out if you're interested in learning more:

Man, I hope I get to work on that some day! That game has a script I would looooooove to translate and/or edit. ;)

So how long is Brandish The Dark Covenant anyway ?
And are you guys going to announce a release date during E3 ?

Oh and is there going to have a collector edition for Akiba's Trip ?

So how long is Brandish The Dark Covenant anyway ?

I'm the worst person to ask, since I always take my merry time when playing games like this, so my playtime usually ends up being much longer than the average.

I wound up putting a total of 35 hours into the game before completing it (with both Ares and Dela), so I'd say for the average gamer, you can expect at least 20 -- probably more. Unless you're speed-running, this game is pretty damned meaty, and is very much meant to be played slowly and deliberately (because if you rush, YOU DIE). ;)

And are you guys going to announce a release date during E3 ?

'Fraid we don't know exact release dates for any of these titles. All we can give are vague seasonal estimates right now.

Oh and is there going to have a collector edition for Akiba's Trip ?

Nope, sorry. We were only able to make standard editions for this one.

But as I like to tell people, the game itself is basically a special edition all its own, since it's dual voice with English and Japanese AND contains additional content unique to the localized version. So just think of it as an LE with all the bonuses in the game itself. ;)

Can't wait to play those games on my Vita .

You know I have been curious about Brandish localization, how did you manage to bring a 4 years old PSP game here ? did you encounter any issue or trouble along the process ?

I'm just pleasantly surprised I was really not expecting this to get released here .

I'll look forward to Story of Seasons (and those Super Mario items)! It'll be interesting to see how XSEED conveys the message about the continuation of the previous IP under this new "Story of Seasons" name to those who already know of Harvest Moon. From what I've read here on NeoGAF, Harvest Moon had appeal to a younger demographic than, say, Rune Factory (which seems to be targeted at older fans) so I hope that the Story of Seasons IP can retain the appeal to younger players that it did under the Harvest Moon name, if that's the direction it'll continue with. I've always gotten the sense that older fans are the only ones who play these games in significant number in the west, yet that's only based on being in this bubble of internet denizens rather than knowledge of the habits of those in the outside world. But it's nice to know there could be young players who play Harvest Moon (and hopefully they'll pick up Story of Seaons) too!

I've enjoyed very much the two Rune Factory games that were translated by that person with the avatar of a box on her head, and have had months of fun and laughter with just those two games. I'll surely have months of fun with Story of Seasons too (I'll miss Box Head doing the translation though :p), and I defnitely know it's in good hands.

There's... not really anything all that difficult about it, honestly. It's not much of a change from our previous PSP localizations. The only real difference here is time, and time has actually made it easier -- the submission process for PSP games these days is halfway automated compared to how it used to be. ;)

The downside is that the PSP is less viable as a platform, but since the game is Vita-compatible, it just needs to overcome the stigma of being a last-gen game on a current-gen handheld. Which I honestly don't think will be a huge problem for most of the people who'd be interested in playing the game in the first place.

Jess wasn't actually the translator on those games, but rather the editor. We definitely miss having her around to edit, though! We'd dump SO MUCH WORK on her if we could. ;)

(prepares to run if Jess shows up...)

What was shown in E3 is not the entire Xseed lineup for 2014 right? Are there more surprises? Like anything to do with Falcom besides TitS?

I'm still pretty shocked by this Brandish announcement. Next thing you know you guys will announce Xanadu Next for PC/Steam and than all things will be right with the universe
Until someone localizes Yakuza 5/Ishin/HD 1 & 2 that is...

+1! Looks sweet, though I don't know how much XSEED does with rhythm games these days. (Though on the flipside: KORG DS-10+!)

And Orgarhythm. And our just-announced Senran Kagura Bon Appetit.

Rhythm games certainly aren't outside our wheelhouse. They're just not quite in our living room yet. ;)
