So 2.5 billion USD profit for the year?

That is simply insane! And look, my Nintendo stock bounced on the news, and WiiFit hasn't even been released in the US yet. My sell order is currently at $80 a share, but I think I should revise that to $90.

Nintendo's numbers are full year, MS and Sony are up to Q3.

Nintendo tends to underestimate its shipments, though in this case I'm not sure how they possibly could be. Either way, this data ends March 31st--by now it could well have sold somewhere near enough the extra two million that it will have sold 100 million by this time next year.

I hear you but after 3/31, Nintendo is forcasting that in the 28 million. I can't really fathom 30 million in a year. That's the best any videogame system has ever done. Where's the ceiling on DS, in terms of yearly output/sales? It's in it's 4th year and this is when it should peak. If Nintendo is estimating lower sales, than maybe it'll be a slow decline. I guess JPNs interest is declining. But have we seen the tip of the iceberg in NA? Hell no, if 700K is anything to go by. Hell, NA could prop up sales on it's own.

I would bet on 30 million also.

First, bycha borrowed them from me ;) and Microsoft's numbers are only up to Q2 (their fiscal year starts in July vs April for Sony and Nintendo)

On the topic of software sales:

GBA: 376.66m (4.644 tie ratio)
NDS: 369.61m (5.235 tie ratio)

GC: 208.47m (9.589 tie ratio)
Wii: 148.44m (6.071 tie ratio)

Essentially there are more people buying games for the DS than there were on the GBA, but there are less people buying games for their Wii.
I'm thinking comparing end-of-life ratios to early- or mid-life ratios will lead to some iffy comparisons. Let me take a look at the older systems through approximately the timespan of the newer systems.

GCN through March 2003
Hardware: 9.55m
Software: 60.51m
For a ratio of 6.34.

GBA through September 2004
Hardware: 58.13m
Software: 221.69m
For a ratio of 3.81.

Of course there's also the matter that while all shipped hardware will eventually end up sold, we can't be sure of the same for software.

Why does Bycha do this?

Sony and Nintendo's fiscal year have always ended on March 31st. MS's is June 30th. I don't see why the adjustment is necessary.

It's simply how they name their fiscal years. Other than the shift of 3 months for Microsoft vs Sony & Nintendo, they cover the exact same time periods, so they are appropriately listed in the columnar format.

The big issue to recognize is that:
a) Nintendo's number is for the full fiscal year/ 4 quarters (April 2007 - March 2008)
b) Sony's is for 3 quarters with the 4th to be announced May 16th. (April 2007 - Dec 2007)
c) Microsoft's numbers currently only include 2 quarters, the 3rd to be announced at 4pm EST today. (July 2007 - Dec 2007)

Not for Sony, I'm not.

As far as I knew, every corporation used the year that their fiscal year ends in as their designation.

So Sony calls the fiscal year ending on March 31st, 2008: FY2007?

o_O

9 out of the 12 months are in 2007, only 3 are in 2008. When you think about, Nintendo's is the one that least matches the calendar year it falls in. Microsoft could go either way, with six months in each.

~Most companies would tend to put the most reflective calendar year in their fiscal year naming, and if it's even use the later year.

Am I right when I say that Sony didn't have an individually reporting games division in 1994/1995 when the PS1 launched? I've looked for data and haven't had much luck.

SCEI wasn't formed until November 1993 and launched the PSOne Dec 3, 1994. Financial reporting wasn't available until 1995.

Early news looks good for MS.

"Entertainment and Devices revenue for the quarter grew 68% over the comparable period last year driven by robust demand for Xbox 360 consoles. Cumulative console sales surpassed 19 million during the quarter, up 74% from a year ago. Server and Tools revenue growth of 18% added to its string of consecutive double-digit revenue growth quarters, which now stands at 23."

That's a pretty damn dismal number. Only 1.3 million worldwide in a quarter? OUCH! Also the YOY comparison here doesn't make any sense, since it's a cumulative number.

Entertainment and Devices

3rd Quarter sales 2008 $1,576m 2007 $936m YTD 2008 $6,565m 2007 4,916m

It's a good turn around for Microsoft from last year. Although I think they're sacrificing quite a lot of market share for the profit. But hey, that's what we were talking about in Pachter thread.

It just makes me sad because they're not going to drop the price.

Ouch for Sony.

The PS3 losses must be massive. Because to get to that number, you've got to take PS2 + PSP profits (I assume they're selling the units at a profit) - PS3 losses.

wat?

Almost -2000 thousand on 2007 and 1200 thousand on 2008?

That is a lot, wasn´t the ps3 (I assume the losses come from that) starting to give benefits between summer and winter? We will see how things change for them when they start to get money from it.
And Nintendo, wow. Just wow.

Not counting for inflation, Sony and Nintendo were pretty much tied as far as overall profits from 1998-2005.

The figures should be quoted as whatever they were at the time, not adjusted for inflation. What's the point? It's historical data, just leave the numbers as reported.

Wow, I was starting to believe that the PS3 division was going to break even this year, but now next year looks to be more like it for them after seeing how low those numbers are. Well there's always 2010 for Sony to turn a nice profit. By that time Nintendo could be making over $5,000,000,000/year in profit as well if they continue at the rate they're increasing.

These are fiscal years, not calendar years. Nintendo's fiscal year ends March 31st, as does Sony's, so these are both full FY2008 figures. Microsoft's ends in June, so it's 3/4ths of a fiscal year for them.

So I think SCE still has a chance at being profitable next fiscal year... although it's not a guarantee.

Edit: Whoops. Sony hasn't released FYQ4 numbers yet. They don't release for another week.

Adjusted for inflation using the internets's inflation calculator. All years 1998-2007 calculated in 2007 dollars.

Otherwise, it looks like this:

Wow, I was starting to believe that the PS3 division was going to break even this year, but now next year looks to be more like it for them after seeing how low those numbers are. Well there's always 2010 for Sony to turn a nice profit. By that time Nintendo could be making over $5,000,000,000/year in profit as well if they continue at the rate they're increasing.

The games division WAS profitable in the quarter taking place in Oct - Dec. 2007. They could make money again in Jan. - Mar. 2008 but still lose money for the fiscal year.

We won't know until the numbers come out.

I wonder how long the PS2 will continue to support the gaming division, I cant see it selling as many in Christmas 2008 as it did in 2007, as the Wii will hopefully be more readily available and the 360 and PS3 will be closer to the PS2 price further eating into sales. Also there will be less PS2 games this year to support sales.

If Sony cut the PS3 price if MS makes cuts profitability will be put off for another year I think.

Also [just for the fuck of it], here are the correlations between the various players and the industry [well, the three manufacturers] as a whole:
Sony: 0.600564392
Nintendo: -0.00073003
Microsoft: 0.862367987

Ah, so the negative correlation explains Nintendo's hostility to the traditional video game industry and 3rd party publishers, etc. ;-)
