Now now, don't be too harsh on him. His screenshot threads and the WiiWare releases thread are very useful, his charts are nice and informative, and he made some nice reusable gifs. Watching Ami clobber him admittedly was kinda amusing at first, but started to occur far too often and lead to him becoming bitter and less interested and involved, which is a shame.
I'd rather have an enthusiastic, highly productive PL than a disillusioned and uninterested one.
There has to be another way to keep him out of (self-inflicted(?)) harms way.

Anyway, sorry for OT. Just found out he's banned again. Poor schmuck.

Actually since the slim very few games bombed on the PSP. They sell pretty much what they were expected to sell. You can't make 50K sellers become 500K sellers. At least its not becoming 5k sellers like some Wii games are.

PSP games that have sold < 5K since the Slim's launch.

PSP Need for Speed: ProStreet - 4800
PSP Umihara Kawase Portable - 4000
PSP Sora no Kiseki Material Collection Portable - 3600
PSP Sega Rally Revo - 3500

I guess the difference with the PSP list and the Wii list is that none of the PSP games I thought would sell much better. On the Wii list there's quite a few.

I'm amazed that Opoona, Trauma Center, DDR, metal slug and Sonic Riders sold less than 5K.

Also according to http://joshuajamesslone.name/gamecharting/sqldirect.php Family Ski sold 90684 so that probably why my list only returned 7.

First, let me straight up acknowledge that Wii is not a fertile land for traditional third-party games at the moment in Japan. Getting better. Still fairly bad, but just not as bad as last year.

ccbfan said:

The first Trauma Center (~25K LTD) opened at 3800, so this one started off almost exactly the same.
DDR has been in a big decline in Japan. Most of the PS2 versions debut < 10K and never chart again.
Metal Slug Complete launched on PS2 last year and sold 15K its first month (a full four weeks of sales).

You may recognize more of the games on the Wii, but that doesn't mean that they would be expected to sell much more, based on historical precedence, than they did. Doesn't mean the Wii's sales are good, either, of course.

Family Ski was in the Monthly Top 50 in March and was at 100,092.

I'm not that surprised. Opoona had zero advertising and a price that was far too high. As for Metal Slug, I actually wanted to buy that game and was disappointed when no store in my town stocked the game. I had to order it online because the biggest store in my town didn't even have it listed in their catalog.

Trauma Center WAS advertised and just is a series that Japanese people shun. (they didn't buy the first Wii one or the DS one either) Same with Sonic Riders, but considering the quality of the title you could just call them wise consumers.

The DDR fad is over in Japan, not just on Wii but everywhere. I haven't seen a DDR machine in an arcade for over 3 years.

Was their any reason for Koei to believe that Opoona would sale without ads and at a higher price? I think the same thing happened to NG DS, it's confusing.

I have never understood Koei. The released their Wii Romance Of the Three Kingdoms game for over $100 and they wonder why they can't sell more than 1000 copies.

The pricing is madness.

No More Heroes was also like almost $70. For me it was worth it but I was still kinda upset that I would have to pay that much for it. For most people about 5000 yen would be the sweet spot for that game. I think it would have sold better. Not massive sales but better.

Sengouku Basara Heroes (am I spelling that right) was also a lot more on Wii than PS2. Sure it included the previous game as well but it was a good $20 more (IIRC).

In Japan Wii games often cost more than comparable PS3 games. I find that really weird. The system was sold to be affordable but third parties charge so much for their games.

The simple series by D3 was 2000 yen on PS2. But the Wii games are 4000yen. All the PS2 Onechanbara games were 2000 yen but the Wii game Onechanbara R was like 5500yen. It think it was lucky to sell the 2000 copies it did.

I don't get third parties in Japan. The only pricing that seems to make sense is Nintendo. Their prices always seem fair. Wii Sports was 4000, so was brian training and their full featured titles cost normal price. Nintendo made games are the best value for money on the system.

Nights cost more than Super Mario Galaxy (7,140 compared to 5,800 for Galaxy) What the hell were they thinking? Personally I liked Nights a lot, but if I were on a limited budget I could not justify the $13 premium for Nights. I would just get Galaxy.

Third parties really wonder why no one is buying their games?

At least in the US it's more or less that everything costs $50.

I agree with you, Vinnk.

I'm very curious to see how much Power Pro Yakyuu 15 will sell on Wii, it's priced less than PS2 version (6980yen vs. 5980yen) while last year they had same price and PS2 version sold around 3,5x Wii version...

So how MH3 handles multilayer could be a key to its success.
I'm hoping for at least 2 player local co-op. I doubt Nintendo would allow WLAN by then, unless Capcom really push them into doing it.

Can it have something to do with the license fee, i mean that Nintendo takes more money pr. game sold so the developers sell the games at a higher price to compensate for their loss (or what i shall say).

Licensing fees perhaps? Nintendo was always known for charging high royalty rates.

As far as i know Capcom published both God of War 1 and 2 for PS2 in Japan so i dont find it strage that Capcom also publish God of War to PSP as well.

They used to, but I remember developpers saying that it was no longer the case since Iwata's arrival. I don't think it's the main reason. (besides this, Power Pro is cheaper on Wii than on PS2 or anywhere else, no ?)

I don't agree at all with Vinnk.

His examples:

San Goku Shi XI with Power-Up Kit - 9800Y
Same price on PS2 and Wii, its a 'power up' edition

No More Heroes - 7140Y
Nights - 7140Y
Hello standard price for 3rd party games for like 8 years on PS2

Sengouku Basara Heroes - 7340Y
2 games in one. PS2 release at 5480Y doesn't have the original Sengoku Basara 2, which costs 3129Y in its budget release.
Compare 7340Y for a Basara 2 + Heroes with 7329Y PS2 users had to pay for the original release of Basara 2.

Onechanbara R - 5800Y
Not a budget series anymore, see X360 Onechanbara, 7140Y

Stumpokapow

listen to the mad man
Kurosaki; your points are all true. But Vinnk can also be right, since his main idea is "These games ought to have been cheaper; they would not have bombed as badly". I think it's possible to say that game prices are negatively impacting sales in a very real way while simultaneously acknowledging that there's a particular reason why those games were priced the way they are.

Konami's decision with Powapuro is a pretty obvious one as far as I'm concerned. They know they need to migrate the audience off the PS2. They know the audience is not going to migrate on its own. They offer a decent incentive that prioritizes the Wii version without necessarily killing the PS2 version.

uhhhh

Capcom published both God of War PS2 games in Japan, along with all the Grand Theft Auto games. This shouldn't come as a surprise. This also doesn't have a damn chance at 150k first week. Neither PS2 God of War game broke that figure lifetime, for one, and it's likely to be CERO Z (the first PS2 GoW wasn't but I think that was a serious error on the part of CERO), so it's not like it's going to be advertised.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be controversial. I agree that Nintendo is not moving into unprecedented price catagories, I am just saying that it is not working and I am not sure why 3rd parties charge as much as they do.
His examples:

San Goku Shi XI with Power-Up Kit - 9800Y
Same price on PS2 and Wii, its a 'power up' edition

San Goku Shi XI with Power-Up Kit was the same on Wii as PS2 and both of them sold badly and were way, way, WAY too expensive.

No More Heroes - 7140Y
Nights - 7140Y
Hello standard price for 3rd party games for like 8 years on PS2

Nights was 7140 yen. I realize that is the same price as a lot of other titles but then you see Nintendo selling Galaxy for so much less and it starts to look like a rip-off. As much as I love Nights, and I do, I don't see it as being $13 better than Mario Galaxy. I don't think I am alone on this either. If I had only enough money to buy one game every few months (this is the case for a LOT of people) I would get the cheaper Galaxy over the more expensive Nights.

I mentioned that the Wii version came with a version of the previous game. The problem is that the fanbase who already owns the first game doesn't want to rebuy it and for new (or potential new) fans it is a pretty big price barrier for them to get into the series. There should have been the option to just buy Heroes and a budget re-release of Basara 2 for the Wii. As it was people had only one option, so they went for the PS2 version. That's what I would do too.

Onechanbara R - 5800Y
Not a budget series anymore, see X360 Onechanbara, 7140Y
[/quote]

Onechanbara sold well as a discount priced title. ALL full priced versions flopped. It should have been a discount title on the Wii, that's all I'm saying.

My point is, games made by Nintendo besides being better advertised are also usually cheaper than similiar 3rd party efforts and are seen as a better value for the money. Had Oppona came out at 4000yen rather than 7,140yen, I think a lot more people would have been willing to take a chance on the unproven franchise. True Koei wouldn't make as much money per unit, bit when your sales at 7,140 never even equal a five digit number, then who cares?

But you are right, this is nothing new in the industry. Final Fantasy XII went for 8,990yen and sold fine (it was a massive game that people felt was worth the premium cost). But my friends who are new to video games (or are "lapsed gamers") usually only own 3 or 4 games because in their opinion they are too expensive. When they do cough up the money for a game they want something that is a great value for their money and they are not very willing to take risks when so much money is involved. So they buy first party titles. They don't know they are first party titles, they don't scan the back of the box to make sure Capcom was not involved. They don't care. They just want a game that they feel is worth their money.

I think if third party games sold at lower prices they would sell better and maybe have a chance in a first party dominated market.

Perhaps I am being too idealistic...

Not at all. Prices are perhaps the last remaining hurdle for games to become really mainstream. Nintendo's approach of starting at a lower price but then keeping that stable is going in the right direction, but I feel even their prices are still high (especially here in Europe) and are only considered low relative to what's demanded elsewhere in the industry.

We've known for some time that the licensing fees for the DS&Wii are lower than others so I don't think charging an extra $10 would be because of that. I could see charging $3-5 per copy but even that seems like a bit much. Spread that licensing fee across 30k of sells and it can't be all that much is what I'm saying.

Oh...I didnt know this...

Well i say 150,000 first week because its Capcom, and the PSP has made them buckloads of money, and monster hunter was in the same "place" way back when...but point taken.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Wii Play is knocked out of the top ten!? :O

Does thet pretty much wrap it up for Wii?

Thanks for the list jarrod. I didn't know Tecmo's next suspense title was coming out so soon, is Yamamura Misa as popular as Nishimura Kyotaro in Japan?

Yeah they were, just like they were always known for heavily censoring games, years ago.

It's all the licensing fees then? If that is really the case Nintendo has no one to plame for the poor sales of 3rd party games then themselves. PS2 built up a massive library of inexpensive (2000-3000yen) 3rd party games to go along with its full priced snd premium priced games. Nintendo needs these.

But are the fees really that much? So much that they HAVE to charge an extra 1300 yen for Opoona, Nights, etc? If that is the case I can see why 3rd parties would hate Nintendo. But I have a feeling that it is not that high.

Can anyone shed a little more light on this?

Isn't the "simple" series of games on the Wii? Aren't those usually vastly cheaper? Or are we talking something else with regards to pricing?

The simple series cost 2000yen on the PS2 and 2,940yen on the Wii. So maybe the Nintendo fees really are a lot higher. Nintendo also dosn't seem to allow a "greatest hits" series of reduced priced games. Or is that the 3rd parties themselves that don't persure it?

But in my thinking, if D3 can put out a game for 2940, why can't SEGA or Koei release theirs for 5800? I think that would be the sweet spot for a lot of customers. Especially those new customers who don't realize that this is how much gamers have come to expect to pay.

You know, Vinnk, I wonder the same thing. There's no reason for those games to be so expensive. I would have purchased Romance, but it's $100. Are they crazy? No wonder they only sold a couple copies. At $50, it's reasonable, and I wonder if other players would have picked it up.

I get the feeling that companies are trying to take Wii players for a ride with their pricing.

Oh, and those of you in Japan who are looking for Wii Wheels, Bic Camera got a shipment in today. I was able to finally pick one up!!! Woot!

Stumpokapow

listen to the mad man
holy fuck at mario party ds being at 1.7 million.

Top 5 Mario Party Games:
Mario Party DS - 1,706,000
Mario Party 8 - 1,216,000
Mario Party 4 - 902,000
Mario Party 2 - 884,000
Mario Party 3 - 846,000

So MPDS might end up lifetime DOUBLING the top selling Mario Party game before this generation. I find it hilarious that people were blown away when 8 ended up being the best-selling Mario Party--and then DS annihilated even that.

Also, Batallion Wars 2 is pretty much equal to Batallion Wars 1. BW GCN opened at 21k. No surprise here, really--it's a thoroughly C-tier game in terms of advertising/promotion, it's massive delayed from the NA release, and it's being pushed out in a major dead period.
