holy fuck at mario party ds being at 1.7 million.

Top 5 Mario Party Games:
Mario Party DS - 1,706,000
Mario Party 8 - 1,216,000
Mario Party 4 - 902,000
Mario Party 2 - 884,000
Mario Party 3 - 846,000

So MPDS might end up lifetime DOUBLING the top selling Mario Party game before this generation. I find it hilarious that people were blown away when 8 ended up being the best-selling Mario Party--and then DS annihilated even that.

Once more proving that handhelds are where it's at in Japan this generation.

As much as these numbers are down (since it is may after all, a slow time of the year) it's still amazing how well the trend is holding on everything pretty much across the board. I think it's fair to say that a very small number of titles (mostly monster hunter at the moment) are mainly holding up PSP sales right now, whereas the Wii and DS are still drawing people in with a variety of titles, so it's probable that they are more sustainable.

I didn't post this last week, but here's my chart tracking the weekly sales of SSBB, MHP2G and MKWii.

FamChart2008.jpg

I capped Super Smash Bros Brawl at 16 weeks to avoid the chart getting too squashed. Seeing as SSBB has only sold 17k units in the last two weeks (and less than 6k this past week), it's going to take a few months for it to break 1.7M.

After 6 weeks, Mario Kart Wii is less than 140k units behind SSBB's 6-week total. This week, MKWii closed the gap by about 9k units. MKWii and SSBB are going to be close by the end off 2008, but I imagine that MKWii will eventually pull ahead.

So, at this point is it safe to say that Monster Hunter Portable 2G will be the highest selling game of the year if Dragon Quest IX gets delayed into 2009? Regardless of what Nintendo announces as their big holiday 2008 release, I can't see anything reaching 2.3M-2.5M before then end of 2008.

In Japan? Dragon Quest IX is pretty much it. Monster Hunter is a damned beast of the apocalypse.

When does Pokémon Platinum launch? Thought it was around Autumn time. And I wonder what sales of DQV will be like given the strength of DQIV's sales so far...

Wii Fit is going to have a higher LTD than MHP2G, but I don't think it will catch MHP2G for units sold in 2008. It is currently a little over 1M units behind and hasn't surpassed MH in weekly sales yet.

Pokemon Platinum has a slight chance, but Pokemon Emerald took over 6 months to reach 1.5M, and I don't see this one selling a ton better. Sales of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl were pretty close to those of Ruby/Sapphire in Japan.

02./02. [PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Capcom) - 82,466 / 1,992,000
03./04. [WII] Wii Fit (Nintendo) - 52,744 / 2,039,000

Am I missing something? Didn't Wii Fit come out in 2008?

EDIT: Nope, it didn't. Hmm. December 2007 / January 2008 -- what's the big difference? ;)

And yeah, I still think it might outsell it for the year.

No, Wii fit launched in Nov 2007 in Japan. It sold 900k last year.

EDIT: Oops. I was wrong. December 1st in Japan. Still, 900k of those sales were from last year.

I think I'm gonna play the PS360 fan's game and say that Monster Hunter has to stop selling at some point this year, whereas Wii Fit likely won't. I mean, it's gonna stop selling any day now, right?

It's going to be close. There are what? 31 sales weeks left in 2008 after these latest numbers? Wii Fit has had a lot of weeks under 40k recently, but lets say it sells an average of 40k a week for the next 28 weeks, and then 100k a week for the last three weeks of the year (to account for holiday sales).

That gives you just over 1.4M from next weeks chart until the end of the year. Add the 1.1M that Wii fit has already sold, and you have 2.5M total. With those sales, it will be a toss up as to whether Wii Fit beats out MHP2G or vice versa.

However, if sales slide to an average of 35K for the next 28 weeks, and again 100k for those last 3 weeks, you're looking at a total of 2.3M which I imagine MHP2G should surpass with little problem.

Platinum's due for an autumn launch. I wonder if someone can go compare its potential growth over Emerald as DP did to RuSa?

I think DQV's sales might be lower than DQIV's by a bit. It'll probably still clear a million, but the PS2 version still feels fairly recent, which may impact sales.

Naturally DQVI should be the best selling one of the three remakes as it was only released once.

MHP2G won't stop charting until MHP3rd is out.

Your wish is my command.

a) RuSa - 5,335,000
b) Emerald - 1,947,000
c) As a percentage - 36.49%

d) DP - 5,445,000

Result: D * C = 1,986,880

Quid pro quo: DP are still selling just as RuSa kept selling years later. I expect DP to top out around 6 million which puts Platinum at 2,189,400.

Assuming a 1mln launch week and 100k a week for every subsequent week, it'd have to launch in September to hit 2.5 million.

Yep. MPDS is the best Mario Party since 1 or 2. The minigames are consistently good, the boards are decent, and the download play is excellently implemented.

In japan, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl outsold Ruby/Sapphire by less than 2%. If Diamond outsells Emerald by a similar percentage, you're looking at maybe 1M after the first 4-6 weeks and 2M LTD.

I agree that DQVI will potentially be the highest selling DS Dragon Quest remake, but I doubt any of the three will break 2M LTD. DQV for PS2 sold 1.6M copies, so DQVI DS may end up in the 1.5-1.75M range.

EDIT: Stumpokapow makes an excellent point about Diamond/Pearl still selling, but Emerald took a long time to top out at 1.95M, so I doubt Diamond will be anywhere near that number by the end of the year.

I'm glad Capcom has got another big hit on there hands. Although this one is probably there biggest hit in Japan yet. I can't remember any Capcom game selling better. Maybe the number guys could prove me wrong but its amazing what MH has done on the PSP. the third MHP game will probably reach DQ levels.

1st week, DP outsold RS by a good 250k actually.

Barring any unforeseen megatons (like NSMB2 or a DQ9 delay) I think top 5 for 2008 releases is going to look like...

1. Dragon Quest IX (DS) Square Enix
2. Monster Hunter 2G (PSP) Capcom
3. Pokemon Platinum (DS) The Pokemon Company
4. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) Nintendo
5. Dragon Quest VI (DS) Square Enix

Does anyone know what percentage the Monster Hunter games make up of Capcom's total handheld sales so far this gen? The 3 PSP titles are nearing a combined 5M copies sold.

Smash Bros Brawl will be in the top 5. At the very least, it will Reach 1.7M by the end of the year. I doubt Pokemon Diamond or DQVI will be that high before Dec 31st. Has DQVI even been confirmed for 2008?

I feel Animal Crossing Wii will be released around 21 November, with around 800k at launch and 5 weeks, the highest weeks for sales in the whole year, it can easily break 2 mln LTD at the end of the year.

Also Fit LTD > MHPn2dG LTD for sure

Didn't DQIV DS eventually go on to beat the sales of the PSone remake? I think we could be in for a shock as to just how well DQV does. Was the PS2 remake around 1.5-1.6 million or something like that?

I would have definitely put Platinum at 2 million plus not long after release. That Christmas period is going to be a big factor for it as well, considering how something like Mario Party DS magically shot up to 300,000+ per week around that time. Platinum could make a killing.

I think Wii fit will eventually overtake Wii Sports to become the best selling Wii game overall, but I'm not convinced that Wii Fit's 2008 sales will surpass MHP2Gs 2008. In the end, Wii Fit will win out by at least 1M units though. I'm sure that it will continue to sell at the 10-15k/week level throughout 2009 and possibly 2010.

Even if Wii Fit sells more than MHP2G this year, it was released last year, so the best seller in 2008 would still be MHP2G. Basically, it'd be Wii Sports vs MHP2 all over again.

I seriously doubt DQIX will be released this year...

The difference is that DQVr for PS2 came out 2.5 years after DQIVr for PS1. DQVr for DS is coming out 8 months after DQIVr for DS. I think that the quick succession in which the DS remakes are being released, coupled with the fact that DQVr for PS2 only came out four years ago, is going to cut into DQV for DS's sales a bit. It's going to be sandwiched between DQIV (which had the privilege of being the first DS remake) and DQVI (which hasn't been re-released in close to 15 years), with all three titles likely launching in a 12-18 month timespan.

If you couldn't afford 4 DQ games in an 18 month time span (DQ IV-VI plus the eventual release of DQ IX), DQV is probably the one to skip out on. I'm sure that used PS2 copies are still pretty easy to come by in Japan.

I will be very surprised if Pokemon Diamond breaks 1.5M be the end of the year. Both Crystal and Emerald ended up selling in the 2M range with long legs. I don't know why this game would be drastically different.
