I think I post this every time, but Out There Somewhere is 24 cents. It's a fantastic little platformer with a cool twist to the gameplay. You can finish it in maybe 2 hours or less, but there is a surprising amount of replayability because the gameplay is so fun that you want to do everything. I got about 5 hours out of it in total. I got it for 9 cents, but it's definitely worth it for this price too.

That looks neat, thanks!
It is included in this bundle as well: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/1594/

Intrusion 2 65%, $3.50

A short but sweet 2D shooter with cool physics. Stuff breaks, blows up, snow balls get bigger as you roll them across the snow and you can use them to platform or drop onto a board for counter weight shenanigans. It also has excellent boss fights.

There is a free demo to try on steam... Alternatively play the demo via your browser here.

Give it a go. Be amazed. Buy the game. :D

Edit. Might be worth mentioning I played on PC first with controller, didn't really like it. Used a mouse later and it just clicked. I think there was may have been some input lag when I used the controller though it may also be fixed. Mouse for precision aiming is much better though.

The gameplay is very unique and veried, fast paced and fun, with amazing music and addictive fast gameplay, making it the only must play title on the PSP.

The Steam port is one of the biggest surprises for me and it's the definitive edition of the game, combining content from the 360 and the PSP.

Falling down a well was never so addictive.

Spelunky -80%, FTL -70%.
Two of the best indie games ever made. Everybody probably already owns them though.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Just so that people are aware, you should buy the second game in the series (Half-Minute Hero: The Second Coming) as it comes bundled with the first game for the same price. $2.49 is a good price for the first game, but both games at that price is just a bonkers amount of content. One of the only series I can think of where I bought the game multiple times (PSP, X360 and PC for the first game, PSP import and PC for the second) and played though it every time with no regrets.

It's also worth noting that the game has the same writer as the Senran Karuga games (no, really) and just like that series the game's writing is far better than it has any business being.

Playing this right now so that I'm up to speed for SW 2 since I ordered a 4k TV and wanted to play a PC game with HDR.

Surprisingly well written. Sure it's crass, but that doesn't degrade the quality of writing. I'll recommend this as well!

Blue Revolver, an authentic Cave-style shmup (but not a Cave clone!) that's accessible without being watered-down or bloated with euroshmup nonsense. Great art by woofycakes and equally great music by qygen (which is also discounted!) http://store.steampowered.com/app/439490/

Seconding this. Great STG that is extremely underrated.

I'd also like to give a shoutout to SanctuaryRPG - Black Edition, which is 90% off at the moment. The soundtrack alone makes the game worth it but the game itself is great too. Good sense of humor and a surprisingly good battle system.

If you like Spelunky & Binding of Isaac, you will love this. Loads of content, lots of surprises and challenges to find. Definitely one of the biggest hidden gems imo

TowerClimb is a difficult and rewarding procedurally generated platformer with roguelike elements. Enormous and mysterious towers of ancient unknown origin stand above humanity, extending to the heavens. Struggle forward as a weak human, driven by an iron will to reach the top.

($1.99) I'm not usually into bullet hell shooters, but this one is really fun and has a cool bomb system based on a super meter instead of a regular stock. It also has a novice mode.

It's a pure platformer without a time limit or enemies. All about figuring out 'how to I get up there?'. It gets the feel correct for the jumping, which is no easy task in first person.
95% of the 2,215 user reviews for this game are positive. Well worth a dollar.
Wow, thanks for the recommendation. This looks great and like something I would definitely enjoy :)

Been waiting for this to go on sale and now it has. Have been playing it for about an hour now and it's cool. Great retro future soundtrack and large selection of vehicles and mechs to choose from.

It's a short experience but i loved it. The presentation is great, the music is top, there's depth to the movement mechanics and once i finished it i wanted to start it again. If you're looking for something to wind down with after work then this is a good choice and at 65p it's a no brainer to be honest.

King's Bounty: The Legend is 1,74€ and it's an amazing Strategy RPG similar to Heores of Might & Magic (But the whole game is one world of connected maps). The other games in the series are great and cheap too. They are quite similar between each other though.

Thanks for this, i'll be getting this game later for sure, looks like great fun, it kind of reminds me of Strider mixed with a bit of Cybernator.

Threads like this are so important. Hidden behind all the marketing bullshit and average "AAA" games today are titles like this that truly have great gameplay.

Samorost 3. If you love beautiful, original worlds in your point-and-clicks and agree with me that music can make for 50+% of an enjoyable gaming experience, then you HAVE to play this. One of my favourite games of this year and it's already 50% off. The soundtrack is GOAT quality.

Sayonara Umihara Kawase ($6 which is 60% off during sale)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/378750/

I guess you can call it a gem, only around 10,000 people own it on steam the last time I checked steam spy.

It is a physics-based puzzle-platformer which is all gameplay, no story. There are 60 stages in total in which the game can become a very steep learning curve for you to learn techniques and on how to find a solution to a stage.

That is why I provide a Physics Guide linked here: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1298029
so that it can help people to finish the game so that they may want to try previous entries in the game hence:

There is a Trilogy of the series available to buy on Steam.

It costs $12 which is 60% off during the sale and comes with the original Umihara Kawase which released on SNES, Umihara Kawase Shun: Steam Edition which is based off the PlayStation game and then Sayonara Umihara Kawase if you hadn't already bought that.

Amazing indeed! Just checked out Battle C and wow!

He really needs to get some sort of work with a STG/Shmup indie dev.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/204530/

Currently 75% off. From the webpage:

Real time tactical combat
A lengthy campaign where you develop new weapons
Procedural maps and random mutation system keep the game fresh
21 Human weapons and buildings for you to wield
33 Alien mutations to keep you on your toes
Fight thousands of enemies at once

If I were to compare it to anything, I would say that its a top-down version of starship troopers. well, it's also got base building, but essentially it boils down to you having only a certain number of units and using those units to fight endless hordes of aliens until you're able to push back and take out their hive. Fun campaign and its an absolute steal at its current sale price.

Twilight Struggle 7.49€ 50%
Steam

A digital version of one of the top rated boardgames on boardgamegeek.com (which is to my knowledge the largest board game community site). An asymetric turn based combination of a war game and a card game that makes brilliant use of its cold war setting.

header.jpg

Renowned Explorers: International Society 7.99€ 60%
Steam

A really good rougelike/turn based strategy game with a great combat system and a wide difficulty selection that allows it to be easy enough for genre newcomers or absurdly difficult for strategy game veterans.

header.jpg

Sunless Sea 6.45€ 66%
Steam

One of the best written games since Planescape: Torment, and one my personal favorite world in a video game. A must play for anyone who appreciates good worldbuilding, interesting locations and Lovecraft style mysteries.

header.jpg

Thea: The Awakening 11.99€ 40%
Steam

An interesting sort of spiritual successor to King of The Dragon Pass where every encounter, from combat to diplomacy, is resolved through a card game. Unfortunately suffers from a less than stellar English translation (its far from horrible, but with how much text there is in the game it could have been a lot better).

header.jpg

Age of Wonders III 7.49€ 75%
Steam

A great fantasy 4x/Strategy game. Most similar in style to Heroes of Might and Magic or the old classic Lords of Magic. Comes with a fairly lengthy and challenging campaign as well as plenty of standalone scenarios. The previous game in the franchise, Shadow Magic is also on sale for 2.24€ and I feel like it still holds up today, even when compared to its sequel.

header.jpg

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight 6.99€ 30%
Steam

A metroidvania with beautiful pixel art, responsive controls and Bloodborne/Souls like world. Not the longest game (it took me about 5 hours on the hardest difficulty), and also not much of a sale (although its never been cheaper according to steamdb), but still very much worth it.

Most of these aren't super obscure or insanely cheap, but I still feel like they deserve more attention then they got.

Helen's Mysterious Castle
1,39€ (1,99€)
30% off

HMC is a quite old Japanese indie game made in RPG maker (and, as such, the engine has limitations and for me ran poorly in fullscreen). That sounds quite dull, right?

Far from!

What makes this little title so charming is, apart from the music and spritework, how it's structured. The world is small and to me there was a real sense of mystery - I really wanted to progress and learn more. It's hard to explain without going into detals. The gameplay is also really neat, featuring a turn-based combat using items and wait turns rather than regular attacks. Each item, whether it be a sword or shield, has a certain number of turns it takes to use. When the turn timer hits 0, the enemy attacks, meaning you have to plan accordingly as when to defend or attack. Each item has its own strengths and you have to find a type of gameplay that works for you. Furthermore, the game is never punishing: if you die you simply respawn at your house... with some added health!

Really fun game and probably one of my big surprises of the year. The ending felt a bit heavyhanded in how it lost some of its mysteriousness (wish it still had it, like Cave Story), but... I enjoyed it a lot. If it matters, it took about 10h which includes a tricky bonus dungeon. The game isn't too hard either apart from said bonus.
