Further evidence that Codemasters is the undisputed rally game maestro, DiRT 4 pushes the gymkhana bits into the background and serves up an off-road racer to relish. Bravo.

The latest in arguably Codemasters cornerstone racing franchise; rally racing on PS4 just doesn't get better than Dirt 4. It simply doesn't.

Put off by DiRT Rally because it was too hard? This is the game for you. (Fans of DiRT Rally will also have fun.)

DiRT 4 may not redefine what a rally racing game should be, but its focus on providing the purest experience possible is admirable in an industry that tries to be everything for everyone at once. I can't wait to get back into the campaign, even though it's nearing midnight (at time of writing) and I'm tired as hell.

Worth buying for its superb rally sim alone. But the returning racing modes are bland, frustrating and unsatisfying.

Dirt 4 is an authentic and innovative off-road racer, though it lacks the focus and finesse of its exceptional predecessor.

A little PC-specific FYI pull-out from Ars' review:

Codemasters provided preview code for DiRT 4’s PC version, but we were asked not to review it. The dev promised further graphical optimizations, both in visuals and performance, in a day-one PC patch. We’ll post an update here once we’ve put this PC update to the test. For what it’s worth, DiRT 4’s “unfinished” code got up to 60 FPS performance on our 4K machine (i7-4770k, 1080 Ti, 16GB RAM) with all settings maxed and driving in a rainy, particle-loaded course.

Didn't realise this was out so soon either, i really should play more Dirt Rally, I got stuck as it was so hard.

Seems like I'm not the only one who had no idea this was already coming out. I remember them announcing this a while back and then pretty much nothing. Was there any marketing for this?

Dirt Rally was really good, but didn't like it's career. It seems classic career mode in racing games is dying. :(
Does Dirt 4 have a good one?

Dirt 2 was one of my favourite racing games ever. I didn't mind the Sim-heavy focus of Dirt Rally either, I enjoyed it for what it was.

I was pretty sure this game would be getting low nineties across the board, surprised to see some pretty negative language.

From what I've seen it seems more like in the previous Dirt games where you unlock and choose events in various modes. Minus the over-designed menus.

This is really something that's important for me, too. Dirt Rally couldn't get me hooked with its dry career progression. I also appreciate the somewhat more playful vibe again in the menus and the returning modes such as Landrush to shake things up when I'm tired of pure Rally once in a while.

This is the Dirt game for me. Day 1!

The Forza/FH-Model seems like it would be a good way forward for the series, pleasing both hardcore fanatics and us casual plebs.

Ya was pleasantly surprised by the smattering of types in the career mixed with the light team building gameplay.

i get the impression this is going to bomb in sales. they'll take it to mean no-one cares about rally games despite people loving dirt rally, and end the entire series. i've seen zero marketing on this thing.

Didn't the Dirt games always have crazy good graphics?
I found that Dirt Rally was already step down from the earlier games tbh but it's disappointing to see that Dirt 4 has trouble even matching that. Sometimes the game looks breathtaking but some environments (Michigan in particular) just look muddy (in a bad way), with vegetation that just looks off. It's really beyond me why they decided Michigan was good enough as it looks now.

I do not blame it only on the technical aspect; I think there is a lack of craftsmanship with regards to the tracks compared to the earlier Dirt games, with vegetation just placed randomly instead of in natural ways. Again, it's especially noticeable in the Michigan environment.

From the other thread.
Not sure I would agree with that.

Dirt Rally felt extremely limited to me as far as career and modes go. Now those modes are back in Dirt 4 and they seem to be fun and the career is not as dry anymore, which I'm happy about at least . So there's that.

Also, I despised the Monaco tracks.

From the same review:

The career mode is a trudge through faceless events and half-hearted team management that feels like it's been lifted from one of Milestone's lesser WRC games, and the front-end is either functional or plain frustrating. Dare I say it - I kind of miss the glitz and pizazz of older Dirts, and the feeling that you were participating in an event.
Has he played Dirt Rally with its dry career and barebone, joyless menus? The career progression and menus of Dirt 4 look closer to Dirt 1-3. I really don't know what he is on about.

I am just trying to figure out why its a repost of the link in the OP.

I feel like they've taken a hit ever since the improved physics engine + jump to smaller budget + 60fps on console with DIrt Rally. DIRT and GRID used to have a more stylized, post processed, "watching through a camera" look that's all but gone in these last 2 titles, giving way to a more muddy art direction. Not quite photoreal, but not exciting either. Just sort of bleh in the middle.

Fortunately the actual driving has improved, but yeah, Dirt Rally/Dirt 4 aren't particularly striking games visually.

From the other thread.

this seems about right in regards to how i've felt about previous main DiRT installments. DiRT rally was the turning point for the series for me. it brought it back to the quality of the Colin Mcrae games if not exceeded them.

I think i'm going to skip this or wait until a big price drop. I'm only interested in half of the game (the pure rally stuff) so i'm not prepared to pay full price, even with a track generator (something i wasn't really waiting for tbh... i think there's something to say about proper hand crafted tracks). Also, it's going to be interesting to see how much and how fast Codemasters is going to pump out DLC (new locations and cars) since content seems a bit thin in this one according to reviews (again, a random track generator shouldn't be an excuse for lower content)? Around Dirt 3, Codemasters didn't have a good reputation on DLC so i wonder what they are going to do with this game (i remember not released DLC cars being amongst other cars in the menus when the game came out).

After Dirt 2 and especially 3, i pretty much gave up on Codemasters but Dirt Rally was fantastic. I wonder what Dirt 4 means for Dirt Rally and if we will ever see a proper Dirt Rally sequel? Until then, i will just keep playing Dirt Rally, which is perfectly fine by me.

More power to them if they are going for 60fps on consoles. I would take muddy and ugly at 60 over bright and flashy at 30. Frames per second I mean...

Thanks. Fantastic title and love the Forza Horizon Forza Motorsport thing going on here.

You keep bringing up Horizon, I adore Horizon 3 and I have bought every Dirt game and enjoyed them but honestly after Horizon 3 I don't see myself getting to into this game.

Gonna watch your review in a minute though, you do great work man. Keep it up!

Got both the xbone and ps4pro versions....cant honestly tell the difference apart from the usual shimmering effect on xbone ....i dont think its patched for pro support yet

Assets look really low res

The bones control and haptic feedback is much better than ps4....i dont think it even has rumble
