DiRT 4 Review Thread

This is correct. I am playing on arcade with all assists off. Playing on demanding for the AI level (one level below the most difficult at start). Perfect for me. It is way more accessible than dirt rally (which I love), especially with a controller. Great game (loading times aside). The career mode is really cool with an almost rpg like aspect (or at least I role play as an up and coming driver that starts his own team, yes I'm a nerd).

Edit: with all assists off on arcade it is more challenging than previous entries to me. I also played sim handling since I liked dirt rally and it's really good as well, but I'm having a blast with this due to the career mode primarily. And even though the menus are plain, what they lack in flash, they make up for in depth (at least in the career aspects).

The career team building is still lacking in areas compared to Grid 1, from like 2008. No one else does it at all though unless you look at the specific Motorsport Manager on PC.

The menus are plain, which is fine, but having to load into an in game place just to pick sponsors on your car is awful really. Should have all just been menus or in the same location you load into for the car.

I thought that all games now had to support the Ps4 Pro??
That was a rumor that was proven blatantly untrue. They just have to WORK on the PS4 Pro. This game definitely has Pro enhancements, because they advertised it as such, but I'm not sure they're in there yet (it took Prey two or three weeks to get the Pro enhancements promised on the box.) I definitely stutter on Landrush in 1080p.

at the very least (aside from resolution) it would be nice if we could get higher res textures. the cockpit and instrument clusters look pretty damn bad on x1

Let's be honest, the marketing for it has been pretty lax, when you get people on here, which is a core gaming forum, saying that they didn't realise it had been released, you got to think something is up with the marketing.

Yeah - they seemed to be posting a lot of videos on Youtube but they certainly weren't penetrating into coverage on any sites.

I still don't see why they just didn't keep developing DiRT Rally for a while, they had a winner that could have sold DLC for a long time. Patch in a better career mode, offer more cars and more stage locations for sale and they could have made a ton more money off of what they already had. Oh well, I'll know this weekend whether or not I'll be buying D4 for the PC after customer reviews and such. I may end up just sticking with DiRT Rally until a more pure rally focused game comes out down the road.

They did say from the beginning that DR was an experiment and that a numbered sequel to DiRT would still be coming. That being said, given the critical reception on that, I agree they seem to have back pedaled here. I think we have to keep in mind there were always a substantial number of people in the DR OT that were pretty frustrated, and I imagine CM's larger marketing showed this to an even greater extent. This might have been a good compromise.

Kind of torn now: really want to support CM and grab this, but it seems almost certain to plummet in price both physically and digitally. I guess I'll hold off and stick with Wipeout for now.

So I'm actually one of the few noobs out there who consider Dirt 2 and 3's driving model one of the best ever and I put hundreds of hours in those 2 games. In this case should I go with gamer handling when I get the game tomorrow with assists off like you guys say?
That's what I do and it feels great.

After putting in some time with Dirt 4 last night I feel the same way. Either they could have continued to ride the positive reception to Rally by adding in a more user friendly career mode and gamer handling, or else they could have made Dirt 4 include the content in Rally, like Pike's Peak and the handmade locations there.

I'm still enjoying Dirt 4, but at least in the early going it feels like its missing something. If Rally was an experiment, why not include the content in Dirt 4? And on that point have Codemasters released or hinted at a roadmap of future support? Can we expect to see new DLC tailored to each of the game's disciplines?

Can't believe I paid £45 for this off Amazon. There I was waiting for the price to drop and it never did.

Codies have kind of messed up with this. No real drilling down into the consciousness of gamers and top-end AAA prices (I can' recall when I last paid more than £40 for a game).

My fault really, but I really thought it would drop.

Hope it's a decent ride.

The Peugeot 306 maxi is so fun :D

Edit: lulz, I just rolled from clipping a plastic road side reflector!

Have we confirmed that this game isn't currently supporting the Pro features that they announced about a week before launch?

I was a touched underwhelmed with the visuals and performance, so I'm hoping there's still a little bump coming.

Yep, lets face it...this game is not a looker. I havent gone back to compare but it seems uglier than Dirt Rally.

Yea, guess so. Not a huge deal for me, but I was a little shocked by it. When I got to the Dirtfish Rally School for the first time I cringed pretty hard. Gameplay is excellent tho.

Game feels somewhat more arcadey with the gamer controls but I don't really care, it's a great option and the game isn't as frustrating for me as Rally often was.

For what it's worth...In an interview with EDGE Codemasters told that the plain UI and menus were deliberate. When I first played DIRT4 I was disappointed, but the racing feels so damn good that I don't even care anymore.

I meant the gamer handling model with no assists is more difficult than dirt 2 and 3 not rally. Technically rally is a game in the series but it feels like a different beast to me. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

And to Fox Mulder, I don't remember hiring engineers, press reps and so on in grid. It was just sponsors unless I'm forgetting. Also, there was no upgrading of facilities and improving your cars parts through R&D either (unless I'm forgetting part of grid, which is possible).

Still no PS4 Pro support?

Codemasters apparently said the following:
We have made a number of improvements for PlayStation 4 Pro. These include: Increased MSAA on the scene rendering, increased shadow map resolution, increased Image Based Lighting reflection resolution and accuracy. We have also increased the environment map resolution. The mirror rendering has MSAA enabled on Pro while the base PS4 doesn’t have MSAA at all.

Digital?

I have ordered the Physical for £35.

Huh, looks like the game has unlocked a day early? Steam says it's available and ready to play. I've not bought it yet, still waiting for PC impressions.

CD Keys has it for $36, that's tempting, and I'm sure I could find enough value in it to justify that even if I end up liking DiRT Rally more yet. Plus I'd like to support Codies anyway....

Before I clicked on this thread, I was thinking "one of these games might be a flop. I like Dirt 3 and Rally but it just can't be 8's or 9's again... do you realize how many new games fall into this category?" and sure enough 8.5

The review scale is broken. Games are too good. We need a 16 or 20 point scale on ratings. 10 just doesn't cut it anymore.

- eh I'm just being goofy. This generation has beaten the PS2/ogXBOX generation with the 8's and 9's. I remember one particular issue of EGM... they had the score for Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and one of the Halos.. all games were straight 9's.
2017 is a new golden age for gaming.
