#8 - A Nightmare on Elm Street (Oct 7)
A group on teenagers are being stalked in their dreams by the same man, and when they try to figure out who he is and what he wants they discover a dark secret about his past while they die one by one by his hand, or rather, his knife-glove. On the contrary to Friday The 13th, I definitely liked this classic slasher by Wes Craven. Freddy Krueger is just awesome scary and I thought the movie was surprisingly original and smart. I loved the deaths and the thin line between being awake and the dreams the kids experience. The visual language used was great and reminded me of Scream, while the effects were convincing and fun to watch. Great suspense, loved the deaths and just the right amount of cheese to top it all of. 7.5/10

Your post got me to make The Keep my film of the night. I'll write more about it tomorrow when I do my usual post, but I'd last seen it a good 15 years ago, but I remembered it well, almost every detail. Superb film; Mann can make a stylish mood piece out of filming a banana.

As you said, it feels like a half hour is missing - and the entirety of it comes from the moment Scott Glen reaches the village through to the ending. It goes from meticulous and excellent pacing to, wait they just met and are writhing on the floor in two minutes flat. No, ten seconds of them in silhouette bonding didn't cut it.

I saw the extended edition on television when I was young, and it is the one I still prefer, and I mentally tacked on the full ending tonight.

In the extended version of the film, the otherworldly stranger falls for a long time through the abyss of the keep’s lower caves, waking up later on the lowest level of the keep. He notices he can see his reflection in a puddle of water, showing that - presumably due to the death of the demon with whom he was mystically linked - he has become an ordinary mortal man, instead of dying as he had predicted. He is identified by Eva Cuza as Glaeken "Trismegistus" (Greek for "Thrice Greatest") in an easily-overlooked line (the demon too is named in the scene). After his fall, Eva comes to him, and he is now free to live out the rest of his natural span with the woman who rescued him.

This ties into a scene earlier in the film, where she sees he has no reflection, and later turns the mirror around. In a cut scene restored in one version, Glaeken tells her he can't remember what he looks like any more. Good lord what I'd do for a video release of this, I can't believe it never hit DVD.
I had read that Mann is no big fan of the film, which would explain its absence. It's a shame that he feels that way.

Very good British anthology film that has guests at a house party recounting 5 stories of their supernatural experiences to an incredulous doctor. One of the guests, however feels uneasy as he's been having a recurring dream featuring all the attendants of the house party. The Ventriloquist's Dummy episode stands out in particular.

(day 8) REC 2 - To my pleasant surprise, and contrary to some opinions I had read, REC 2 is a very decent sequel. It lacks some of the mystery and social/group dynamics of the first film, but it does a great job of maintaining the tension and scares throughout the (albeit short) film. The religious explanation behind the infection might put some people off, but it didn't bother me. The biggest flaw is that it often feels like "more of the same". With some re-tooling here and there, you could probably merge the original and this sequel together into one long thrill ride. 2 out of 4 stars, enjoyable.

I had assumed that was the reason, but it's really too bad to hear. The film is flawed but not at all without merits. As a fan of his work, I'd like to have it in my collection.

Such a fun Vincent Price film, so much silly violence but also pretty morbid. Price plays a stage actor who was spurned by a group of critics and is taking revenge on them. The pool of critics is large so the film has lots of killing in it as it moves briskly from one murder to the next. Lot of creative kills here which are fun and involve Price and his troupe of crazy hobos use costumes, makeup and stage trickery to take out the critics.

A classic monster movie that I never watched. It starts off decent enough, but the second act really drags with seemingly 10 minute establishing shots and just long stretches of no dialogue and just dudes swimming with a scuba tank. I was really starting to wonder why this film was so beloved. But finally some action kicks in and things get a whole lot better.
I saw the Legacy Collection version, which has a really clean transfer and looks fantastic. The creatures suit was also really great, and man, what a swimmer the actor must have been. You just don't see that kind of underwater performance in modern films. All in all, despite dragging in the middle, I can definitely see why this film was so well received, especially for it's time! A wonderful classic I'm glad I watched. 8.5/10

Impressions: george clooney plays a great antihero in this movie, and tarantino plays a creeper to the max. i like how it was practically 2 movies in one: the first half with them on the run from the cops, more dialogue sequences and the last being combat oriented with vampires at the bar when everything hits the fan. the ending is good, when it pans back revealing some sort of ancient ruin.

There was a good writeup on The Keep's unfortunate production at Radiator Heaven earlier this year.

Such amazing production design, like most of the early 80s fantasy/horror failures (or 'mixed successes' as I like to think of them) - I got a huge kick out of seeing the silver cross-inlaid walls reprised in Quake thirteen years later.

#9 Jenifer (Oct 7)

Didn't have a lot of time on Friday so I had to squeeze in a short one. Dario Argento's Jenifer has about as much plot (and nudity) as a softcore porn on late night cable. None of Argento's style was present in this, the music was cheesy and the ending was probably the most predictable I've ever seen. Skip it.

(She did have a great rack though... for a morlock).

#5 Murder Party (2007)

Coy6G.jpg

The best thing about this film is definitely the gore and effects. They were really well done for the budget they had. I actually had fun watching this. Basically an every day normal guy gets a note that invites him to a "Murder Party" what he doesn't know is that this party is actually a MURDER party. The whole premise of Murder Party is about these deranged art students who want to try and impress Alexander, who is an alleged art aficionado in an attempt to win his favor and receive some grant money. In order to achieve this they have to commit a murder, using their creativity to transform the murder into something artistic. lol Yeah.. the plot is pretty stupid but it kept me interested and the end pay off was worth it. This is one of those Love it or Hate it type films.

3. Creepshow: The second and third stories I remember, but the one with the yeti and Barbeau was stupid.
4. Basket Case: It's what I expected - bad special effects, a hotel full of clueless idiots, and LOUD NOISES.
5. The Others: THAT. ENDING. WAS. AWESOME. headexplosion.gif

#9 - From Beyond - Unrated Directors Cut (Oct 8)
Doctor Pretorious is experimenting with 'The Resonator' --a machine designed to stimulate the human pineal gland which allows people to see into (and interact with) a parallel dimension. Needless to say, things go very wrong. Well, this was AWESOME. Loved the story, set up, color scheme & look of the movie, creature design (which reminded me of Carpenter's The Thing) and basically everything. The 80 minute run time and it's pacing are perfect and the climax is so satisfying. Maybe it was because I went in with low expectations, but I thought this was very cool. 7.5/10

Now I also want to see Re-Animator..

icarus-daedelus said:
Yeah, seconded on Re-Animator. Probably my favorite horror comedy and one of the few that actually has any traces of horror atmospherics and isn't just all comedy. Also like it better than From Beyond (not related but same leads & director) or Bride of Re-Animator fwiw.

Yeah, Bride isn't as good, but Re-Animator sequels are still worth checking out and Beyond is better than Bride. How could you not love the movie that brought us this?

A quick recap:

#5 Bubbahotep - Oct. 3
#6 The Black Cat (1934) - Oct. 3
#7 The Screwfly Solution (Masters of Horror) - Oct. 4
#8 Shadow of the Vampire - Oct. 4
#9 The Washintonians (Masters of Horror) - Oct. 5
#10 Kiss of the Vampire (1962) - Oct. 5
#11 The Frighteners - Oct 5
#12 Night of the Eagle (aka Burn, Witch, Burn) (1962) - Oct. 6
#13 White Zombie (1932) - Oct. 6
#14 King Kong (1933) - Oct. 6
#15 The Thing (1982) - Oct. 7
#16 Dracula's Daughter (1936) - Oct. 8
~ It was nice to see Edward van Sloan back as Van Helsing, but he's a minor player here... Goria Holden is the titular undead, and Otto Kruger her somewhat less than obsequious manservant, and the film is really theirs... Nan Grey is momentarily gorgeous as the doomed Lili, but this film isn't as atmospheric as its predecessor...

mhyh4z.jpg

#17 I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958) - Oct. 8
~ Gloria Talbot really carries this Invasion of the Body Snatchers-inspired programmer, and over-all the film is much better than its exploitative title might suggest... A great little alien invasion piece from the Cold War, with sympathetic monsters and some fair shocks as well... recommended...

#7 - Sick Girl (Masters of Horror, Season 1) (Oct 8)

sick%20girl.jpg

I have to say that I didn't enjoy Sick Girl at all. It's probably either this or Homecoming which I believe is the worst Masters of Horror flicks I've watched so far. Atleast Homecoming was entertaining during some parts, while this one was incredibly boring. Around 3/4 of the movie is a love drama between two women (trust me, it isn't as exciting as it sounds) before one of them gets infected by a bug, and during all that time there's no particular horror scenes. I'd even say that there's only 10-15 minutes of anything that resembles a horror movie, which is near the end.

I didn't have time to watch a movie yesterday, so I'll watch another one right away to catch up.

#7 Trick 'R Treat

ZRcYB.jpg

So I cheated and I had to watch this one way ahead of schedule. I had heard a lot about this movie through Gaf, and heard all the issues the movie had finding a distributor. Well I'm so glad I actually gave it a shot, because as I said earlier in this thread, this will probably become an anual watch for me. The movie perfectly captures the atmosphere of halloween. It has a shell that seems presentable for the family, as if it were a halloween special, but you learn fast that this is not a family film. I love the camera work and the direction, with the way everything is presented it just feels like Halloween... captures it perfectly.

I like all the story lines seperately... obviously the stories aren't too tightly involved, but when you catch all the different ways they're connected it's pretty cool. The performances all around are pretty solid, and each story stands strong on it's own. My one gripe with this movie is probably
the werewolf scene. Not only is it out of place, but it's done rather poorly. It's not bad, just not as strong as the rest of the movie

Overall I love this movie, and for I can't recomend it enough for the halloween season.

8.5/10

Watched that last night, but slow to update... tonight is Audition.

#5: The American Werewolf in London- 7/10 This movie was good, I liked how the story played out and the friend popping up every once in awhile.

#6: Ghoulies- 2/10 This movie was funny because of how ridiculous it was.

#7: Trick R Treat- 8/10 I liked this movie a lot, it was awesome, loved the atmosphere of it.

#8 - Pick Me Up (Masters of Horror, Season 1) (Oct 8)

pick-me-up-movie-poster.jpg

Pick Me Up was a surprisingly good movie and I enjoyed it alot, however it could be because I watched a bad movie right before this one. The story is about two serial killers that competes against each other by killing people that's on the country roads. One of them is a hitchhiker who kills whomever gives him a ride, while the other one is a truck driver that kills the hitchhikers. I'd recommend Pick Me Up since it was highly enjoyable for me, but you wont find any scares in this one.

Oct. 8 'Salem's Lot (2004)

Have you heard about the hippie vampire? He's ghoul man, really ghoul.

Let me preface this by saying I've never read King's original novel, and I've never seen the 1979 miniseries. So I went into this with no preconceived bias or nostalgic expectations.

I loved this movie. It felt like a three hour celebration of good old fashioned vampire movie cliches, but not in a bad tongue-in-cheek poking fun way. Everything was played deadly serious, and the movie's atmosphere dripped with a sense of dread. All of the characters were well acted, and felt like real small town people (I would know having grown up in one). Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer totally nailed their parts, especially Hauer. As far as I'm concerned as far as best movie vampire actors go it's: Max Schreck, Christopher Lee, and Rutger Hauer. It's a true shame he's only ever gotten to play one so rarely, though I'll be interesting to see his take on Van Helsing in Dario Argento's Dracula 3D.

Aside from Rob Lowe's childhood flashbacks, I really couldn't tell this was made for TV. Classy film TNT, thumbs up.

Movie #8: Black Death (dir. Christopher Smith)

It'd be one thing if this movie was about the bubonic plague (which in of itself is a terrifying concept), but the film has bigger things on its mind and it wildly succeeds. I don't want to delve too deeply since it's a movie that benefits greatly for the less you know going into it, but your perception of what's right and wrong (a very different beast from good versus evil) is constantly tested and it offers no easy answer. Very surprising and very effective, even if the ending puts too fine a point on the proceedings.

Sean Bean is as good as dead in any film, but what a fucking way to go out...

Next film: John Carpenter gets his last chances to impress before withering away in nigh unwatchability; first up is a film that I've only seen the last 10 minutes of, but anything with the potent combination of Donald Pleasence and Victor Wong deserves a full chance.

#9 Friday the 13th Part 2 - I enjoyed it. Definitely agree with this movie kicking off the franchise.

#8 - Dial M For Murder - October 8th

dial_m_for_murder_movie_poster.jpg

Before you complain that this isn't a horror film let me explain. Hitchcock and Stephen King are my two biggest horror influences and I wanted to make sure I at least got a Hitchcock movie in here (not sure if I'll get the chance to pay tribute to Uncle Steve). Today the only Hitchcock films that really get tagged with the horror genre are Psycho, The Birds and maybe Frenzy. All his other films seem extremly tame compared to the now slasher filled section of the horror wing of today's cinema. My first exposure to Hitch was Alfred Hitchcock Presents on Nick at Nite. Here a chubby smartass Englishman bookmarked a 30 minute mystery where a lot of the time the brilliant criminal took one chance too many and ended up getting more than he bargained for. Dial M For Murder reminds me the most of those old episodes and although I will admit even calling it a thriller would be a stretch can we make an exception and call it a horror/mystery for me, just this one time.

Dial M for Murder shows it's roots as a stage production with it's limited sets and claustrophobic scenes. They all work fantastically due to the direction and the strength of the performances. The movie is full of trademark Hitchcock angled shots and nuanced moments. I loved in the first scene of the film when Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings are speaking close together reminiscing about their old relationship. When Milland enters the room (Kelly's husband in the film) Hitchock films from behind the couple displaying their shadows on the door. When they seperate to avoid suspicion as Milland is walking in, their shadows go to the sides of the doors to have Milland literally stepping in between them. So much is said in those two seconds without a single word of dialouge.

It's not a prefect film. I didn't grow up in England in the 50's but not even Texas would try to execute someone with the bum rap that was placed on Grace Kelly (I'd give you a spoiler alert but the film came out in 1954, you had your chance) and the way she is saved from her impending hanging by Hubbard is as far fetched as her conviction was in the first place.

I implore you. If you have the slightest inkling, get some Hitchcock, the master of suspense, into your October viewing if at all possible. I watched this on Netflix Instant Queue, I'm sure TCM will hook us up sometime this month and there is always those pesky libraries which love to have old Alfie's movies laying around. Happy viewing fellow ghoulies...

#7 | The Keep | via Netflix streaming

07_TheKeep.jpg

Not too much to add to yesterday's discussion of Michael Mann's beautiful, atmospheric entry into the horror genre. Gorgeous cinematography and shot composition, and a strong, interesting narrative build effectively for an hour. And then, once Scott Glenn's character arrives on the scene, the story just flies off the rails. Individual scenes work well, but as assembled it quickly becomes a mess. It feels like half an hour was chopped out (and apparently, was), all from the second half of the film. Still, it's a powerful, gorgeous mood piece, with an effective creature and some good character work. It's a pity it collapses, but I'm still glad I revisited it again; it's as strong yet flawed as I remember.

I wish Mann would tackle the same genre again.

Glad to see Trick'r Treat getting so much love. It's my annual Halloween movie partly because it's so much fun, and partly because it so perfectly captures the feeling of the Halloween season. A lot of films are set during Halloween, but none really channel the look, sound and mood of it so well.

Skipping out tonight to hang out with the wife, but I'll watch two tomorrow to make up for it; probably one film and one Masters of Horror episode, or a shorter length streaming film.

9. The Return Of The Living Dead. (the cast is having a reunion at a local horror convention this month! Im so pumped)
Jjry0.jpg

Pretty much a the perfect 80's, its very fun watch. Tarman looks amazing. Its sad watching the movie because Casey (Jewel Shepard) has breast cancer and she having alot of trouble.

"But now she is fighting breast cancer, and having a horrible time of it, not because of the chemo, but because of the insurance, the union bureaucracy and assorted red tape. Her initial insurance, which she paid 1,800 a month into for the last ten years isn't paying anything back because of "out of network" nonsense. She's not working now, because of the Chemo, which means she can't get supplemental insurance, and can't get unemployment as she has a house in foreclosure. And this is a woman who did things *right*. But now? Her 401 K is gone. All of her investments? Gone. And though not at poverty, she still doesn't have the 12 dollars for parking at the Oncologists."

There is a fundraiser page set up, where she's selling some pictures
I'm selling two great photos of me showing the boobs I don't have anymore...plus as an added bonus, you'll get to see that great head of hair I'm losing these days to cancer treatments. As you know, we have a health care crisis in this country...well, I have one in my life. Even with limited insurance, I need to raise a lot of money and I promise it'll all go to medication to keep me around. So here's your chance, guys (or even gals) to buy some naked photos and to help a fellow human being. And men, if your wife or girlfriend finds them, you can just say, "Oh, I was just trying to help this poor lady." Photos are $20 and shipping will be adjusted to $5. All monies will go to Jewel's medical bills

If you have some extra cash, buy a pic. heres the link.

10. Dawn Of The Dead

So badass. Everything about this movie is great. Soundtrack is another shining point. One thing I would have done if I was trapped in the mall, I would have spray painted the entrance windows.

11. Curse Of The Puppet Master
UeYgq.jpg

I love the Puppet Master movies (except the sy-fy crappy Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys). This is one of the worst one is the series. Still I enjoyed it. The Puppet Master movies were my favorite when I was young.

#9 Zombie High - October 9th

Zombie_High.jpg

Virginia Madsen is the only recognizable (and only watchable) part of this 80s "horror" film. Not much happens. The plot boils down to Andrea joins a new school where the more mischevious students are abducted by the staff and turned into zombies. Not the fun brain eating Romero zombies either, more like lifeless pod people. There really isn't enough here to make a full movie. This should have been a bad episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on an Outer Limits.

P.S. This isn't one of the 80's movies where Virginia Madsen gets naked either so don't count on that to be your saving grave like I had. Avoid this one.

So jealous of you guys! I wish I had the time to watch me a ton of horror movies! But with school and having young kids it's hard to fit them in. I do know I need to see Basket Case at least! It's been so long since I've seen it.

Cool, I think you'll like it. The ending sequence in Beyond is even better than Bride. I'm actually considering marathoning all 3 on the 31st as my finale if I have the time. It's been a couple of years since I've seen them.

#1 Sleepaway Camp
#2 They Live
#3 Dead Snow

#4 Trick 'r Treat: Great halloween atmosphere, nice pacing. It's a perfect movie to watch during the season.

#5 The Lost Boys: Campy little vampire flick. A bit more style over substance, but there are worse things to watch.

Up Next: The Thing

Life, work, depression etc are causing me to fall behind.
Started watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre III last night, will try to finish tonight.

#9 The Thing (1982) (Oct 9)
SOuBh.png

I honestly never even considered watching this movie, because I thought it was something similar to The Blob/The Stuff. Then a video game came out for it (which I never played) that everyone praised and my interest was piqued. But not to the point that I ever sought it out. It wasn't until this thread (and research for this thread that lead me to several best-of horror lists, putting this one at the top of several of them) that I got serious about finally watching this. And I'm so fucking glad I did.
Holy shit. This movie did everything right. I got to go into this knowing nothing about it at all, other than it's set in Antarctica, and there's a "thing" of some sort. The opening scene not only provided an establishing shot, but drew you in to wonder what is going on. The language barrier, and the following scene. Then exploring their camp really built the tension. And I was really enjoying what was going on. There wasn't a twist so to speak, but there's a point when someone is trying to revive someone with chest paddles and holy fucking shit. I went from enjoying this film to falling in love with it. And the ending is perfect.
If you've never seen this, I tried really hard not to gush about my favorite parts and spoil it. Do yourself a favor and watch it now. 10/10

Easily my favorite horror film. Can't wait to see the prequel in five days too.

The Thing is up there among my favorite horror/monster movies ever. It really is one of the best the genre has seen. I'm seeing the prequel opening night, and I hope it takes lessons from Carpenter's film, not from modern horror conventions.

Speaking of which: recommended viewing. (<- SPOILERS for the movie)
Just started watching, and wow. I never picked up on the keys bit. Thanks for the link.

Edit: okay, mind blown. Very persuasive observations.

#8 Laid to Rest 2: Chromeskull
- Sequel to a recent mediocre but ok slasher, this film just blew. Does the biggest wrong one can do to a simple genre film, and that is attempting to add a bunch of storyline and background. This wastes so much time on boring crap and the gore/kills just aren't as fun as the first movie... which was it's only good part in the first place. The mythology they are attempting to create here is just awful.

#9 House of the Devil
- So good. Loved every bit of it, and the whole 80's look was fantastic. Slow build up with lots of tension. My only qualm would be that once it gets going near the end, it just kinda stops too soon! I wish there had been a bit more and longer climax here.

(day 9) The Others - I actually hadn't heard of this one until recently, while reading one of the threads listed in the OP. It's a surprisingly nice haunted house/ghost story film set in an isolated manor at the end of WWII. A mother and her two children, and their household, are being plagued by "ghosts". It's got a handful of tense scenes, but it's generally not a particularly scary or frightening film. There's a few twists in the story, but they're foreshadowed a lot and it shouldn't be hard to figure out what's going on early (I caught on quickly). 2 out of 4 stars, enjoyable.

#8 - The Manster (1959)
My first old horror movie that didn't have some sort of well known connection to it. In this one, a scientist injects something into a guy without him knowing it trying to spark a mutation to cause the next evolution of man. The result is he starts growing a second head and becomes mad. Seemed like a pretty generic classic horror flick. What makes these easier to watch is they're shorter than usual movies.

Not necessarily scary, but if you haven't, watch all three Feast movies in one sitting. Make sure to have copious amounts of booze or drugs (whichever you prefer). Get a group of friends together and enjoy. Thank me later.
